Bad-Ass Buick: 1955 Special - /BIG MUSCLE
Owner:
• Harry Fisher
In stock form, the 1955 Buick Special could best be described as a "nice" car. It's not drop dead gorgeous like a 1959 Impala, nor does it have the panache of say a 1956 Chrysler 300. You see the '55 Buick Special was a working mans car. It had room enough for the whole family, a decent power-plant thanks to its 264 cubic inch V8, and style that was, well... above average. Harry Fisher or "Uncle Harry" as most people know him, saw the old Buick a bit differently though. He knew that with a few little touches (like a 502 cubic inch big-block, modern suspension, and a new set of wheels) that this old Buick had the potential to become one of the baddest hot-rods around.

I miss those interiors. Real metal, bench seats, manual cranks, open space, regular gauges. Ahhh look at that wrap around window. I love America

Darrren Betker Well, that is, unless you don't happen to know what the hell you are doing! At 17 years old, in 1985, I bought a 71 Torino GT. Its original 351c was gone, replaced by a 302. It quickly needed a new starter, so I took it to a repair shop and they told me the flex plate had a few missing teeth, which was why starters only lasted a few weeks at best. It kept grinding gear teeth off of the starter. I absolutely did NOT have the money to have that fixed. So I decided to do some stuff myself, while waiting to get the $$ together(while making $5 an hour at a machine shop that produced high stall torque converters, and still in high school). For some reason that I don't recall, I decided to learn how to do engine rebuilding, by removing its cylinder heads and replacing the gaskets, in our apartment parking lot. I had never even seen someone do this, and didn't even have proper tools. I got the heads off, then learned that I should have NEVER attempted to remove them in the first place! Now I couldn't get the flex plate replaced, OR replace the cylinder heads! Long story short, I basically gave the Torino away. It not only takes money to fix up a car, it also requires you spend quite a bit of money on proper tools, AND that you actually have a practical place to do the job. Not to mention the skill and knowledge. MOST people do not qualify under those circumstances, to build their own cars. I know a helluva lot more now about cars than I did in 1985. I do most repairs myself. But I am still not in the position to build a car. The extra money and the facilities are still not available to me.
I never thought a '50s cars could look so beautiful like this one. (This car has CHARISMA!!) Not a '50s car fan though, but now I'm really starting to like it! This particular car totally changed my views. Good work Mike, keep bringing out more classic beauties!
Harry Fisher couldn't have said it better. "Start you passion. Start your love. Do little things to make it YOUR car". Awesome.
Harry Fisher, the owner, seems to be a great man, and a very smart one. Somehow I like listening to him, his speech just flows, and it's flawless. I wonder if he's a lecturer or something. He certainly could be one. Respect!
Mike, I'm a little surprised to hear that you are just now coming up on step with the design of 40s and 50s cars. So much to love.
Such an awesome car. Please do more cars from the 40s and 50s!
Damn, I could almost see Broderick Crawford in Highway Patrol coming down that road. Great vid, keep sharing!

Thanks for this, I’ve been watching these cars for a while and just got my hands on one, going to pick it up next week.
I owned 4 of these back in the day. When I see this car it almost makes me cry...I love it!
Read a classic car magazine in my teens, with an article about a white 1955 Buick Special sedan. I fell in love. I just like the styling so much, both front back, sides, interior, everything. This is my dream car. This styling, with modern everything else. Fantastic!:-)
Gorgeous Buick. Love the fact that he focused on reliability and drivability. This is the type of vintage car I could own and enjoy. Great job Mr. Fisher.
Harry is awesome..... yet another great episode of Big Muscle
Harry Fisher, you did a wonderful job with this great 55 Buick Special 2 Dr sedan!
These videos keep my automotive passion alive through rough times.
Just about the most well done car I've seen since the show started. It's as perfect as perfect gets...which is perfect. And I love that its got a proper big block, not a dreary LS motor.

Wow, what a great episode. Kudos to Harry Fisher and /Drive for bringing me/us an extraordinary ride in quite possibly the most streetably perfect car of BIG MUSCLE. Thank you!
A dream of a car. One of the most beautiful designs of automobile history
Mike, thanks for a wonderful car video. I appreciate the cars from the 50s. This one was clean and well turned out. Please keep them coming.
This is one of my favourite "shows" on drive. This host gives honest descriptions of the cars, and is willing to look at all cars. Well done.
Mike, I've been watching since is beginning and this is by far my favorite feature. Keep you the good work, and mad respect to Mr. Fisher.
Very cool owner. And Mike @ 8:00=funny. He's one of the most real car testers on the internet. Great, genuine personality. Always enjoy his reviews. Thanks.
Wow! That is the coolest 55 Buick I have ever seen. Wish it was mine! Great video :)
Mine was a '55 Super. I liked the killer front end with those bullet bumpers, and the instrument cluster. Also, It was my first car with power windows. I was also impressed by the (factory) sound system in that car: the bass tone was FAT!
Videos like these make me think back to cars I didn't buy and make me wish I had.
Harry Fisher's one of the coolest owners I've seen on the show. What an awesome philosophy he's got. Great vid guys!
Big muscle and Drive Clean are by far my favorite 2 shows on this channel. Keep it up Mike!
I bought one of these with a stick shift in 1963. Lots of fun winding up that little nailhead. As I recall that was one of the Buicks with an extra heater coil under the driver's side of the bench seat. No worries about wintertime cold toes. Always made me nervous when I put one of those Buicks of that era up on a hoist and saw heater hoses underneath the car where they were subjected to all manner of insults by sticks and stones and etc. One good bang, you get a leak, and lose all of your coolant. Lots of ways to make a really nice car out of one of these, which he did. And, yes, I remember how much I enjoyed watching Broderick Crawford and the Highway Patrol show with my Dad.
I've always loved cars from the 40's and 50's, but like most of us, much of the passion has to do with the time you can take to really appreciate them. Believe me, you will be seeing of them in the future.
i like the way this car's owner thinks beautiful ride
Some many gems where dropped in this video!!
55 Buick Specials (3 Hole) also was available in a 2 & 4 door hardtops, convertibles. The one in this video is a Special 2 door sedan. In 1955, Buick was #3 in sales.
Damn, Harry Fisher is like the Bob Ross of cars.
Beautiful! Awesome as always Mike! Keep this up! Cant wait for next episode! :) Really like the people behind these cars, you really know how to find them! :)
I look forward to BIG MUSCLE every week! Love the cars! Love the Host!
Whooo! Loved that torque!! 🤗💕.thanks for sharing.

The original Buick "nailhead" engines were great for the day, But the awful Buick "dynaflow" transmissions made these cars big heavy slow slugs.
Excellent - these keep getting better.
My father bought a new Buick Special 2 door sedan in 1955 for $2500 (still have receipt). It was green with ivory top, sounded like a boat and stalled a lot, but 4 kids and a German shepherd fit in the back seat. Loved this video, thanks
The Buick; What a handsome bad ass hunk or a machine!
You were on the Delta, Sac Delta. Old highway connecting the bay area to Sac for many years. Very historic ......Great show once again and yes nothing like driving the couch. Thanks Drive BigMuscle
i know guys in florida that have had cars for over 30-40 yrs with no problems!!!! it was great to watch this video
Love your car, Harry Fisher. Kind regards, Miguel
Still the best car review channel ever, miss it. Mike was the best.
I'm watching more and more big muscle. Was never into this car culture before. Beautiful.
To the owner of this BAD ASS buick, you seem like a great guy and this car is amazing. Thanks for sharing this with us all.
That's a beautiful car, and a humble owner. All around great package and what it's all about.
Awesome...best one yet and all episodes rock
8:44 this statement is what keeps me going on my Monte Carlo even when money is tight and it looks like no end is in sight, super motivation from Harry.
Thank you so much!!!! SO INSPIRATIONAL!!!!
Buick's nailhead engine was once a nascar race race, and considering I came from a family of Buicks,1964-66 mostly Electra and at least one Buick wildcat sedan 64
Mike, thank you so much man. Beautiful as always.
Wow...beautiful car. The passion of the owner really shows.
best episode yet Mike, freakin love these!
Great car, Great show, thanks!
Gawdddd... that is a gorgeous car!!!
I think we had an orange one of these as a family car either in 1955 or maybe a year or two after. I remember hearing about a long trip where my Mom was driving it and going 90. Evidently, my Dad told her to slow down but she ignored him. After that I don't remember her ever driving when we were all going somewhere by car.
Musto . . .you need more than 10-13 minutes. I cant get enough of watching you drive and talk about these sweet cars.
This owner is smart , knows what he is talking about and also brings tips for young to start with .... great mind and heart for car passion
Good to see the enthusiasm on the fast good looking older cars.
Wow - This car is amazing my favorite of all I have seen
Mr. Fisher really kind of gives me a sense of inspiration. Thank you for bringing him to the show.

I love your big muscle show.
What a gorgeously made car
Great ep! Harry is the man and his car's just sick!
Big Muscle keeps getting better... great product guys!
Another fine episode Mike , Keep up the great work !
The first car I remember and the car my Dad owned when I was born was a '55 Buick Special. Two tone paint and one of the coolest front bumpers ever. I remember driving on the same roads in the video. Very cool that Mike spent 10 hours toolin around the Delta. Those levee roads are some of the best driving and motorcycle riding there is. The only thing better is flying down the river in a big muscle boat. No stop lights, no speed limits, and the girls are half-naked when they get in.
another awesome episode Mike and crew!
Good job mike! I really love your show. Keep it up
Amazing machine....great vid!
This is definitely one of my favs so far in the series! I always go for the cars that are just different. Love it so much more than any 55 chevy!
If you're going to host a car show, you ought to know what you're talking about! First, the Special was available as a two door post sedan, yes...but also as a two door hardtop (no post), four door post or hardtop, station wagon, and convertible. Secondly, the model line up was Special, Century, Super, Roadmaster. You forgot the Super, which was the most popular 55 Buick of all! C'mon Dude!
@eurocarman
6 жыл бұрын
And you also don't really have it right either, best selling 55 Buick was the Special series model 46R Two Door Riviera (hardtop) which sold 155,818 units. The Super series model 56R Two door Riviera (hardtop) 85,656 units Buick produced over 738,000 vehicles in 1955 their best year ever until 1973 when they produced just over 821,000

they called them "Convertible Hardtops" without the pillar because they resembled convertibles.
i love it when they don't ruin the original looks. modern upgrade to the drivetrain is completely necessary
Man! That is such a nice car, and with a 502! I agree with mike, I could drive that car everyday. And it sounds amazing! Nice job!
beautiful car man, sounds awesome
my father had a beautiful deep green over white 55 Roadmaster sedan in 1962 and as a 7 year old, I remember all the space in the backseat , with the flip out ashtray and grab rope attached to the rear of the front seats...also remember the ignition switch set up, so a key did not have to be used if selected....and I remember the huge front bumper design but can't remember if it had 3 or 4 ports.......
Excelente video gracias te felicito
Such a beautifully turned out car. Kudos to the owner for being so cool as well.
This is slowly starting to be the BEST car show i seen.. next to Top Gear the uk version obviously
Best Big Muscle I've seen. Great work!
I absolutely love with Harrys' philosophy about cars.
A thing of beauty! And one very intelligent owner

A Beautiful reliable car ! What he says is Fact. and should be taken into consideration by GM being their dropping in popularity. These days GM has put out crap. And why no bumpers anymore ? is that for the repair shops and insurance companies ? My friend had two of these 55 specials during high school, when you shut the doors you knew it was solid !

one of the most beautiful classics to appear on Drive yet! That's a sexy machine!
Great episode, owner seems super nice
Awesome ride, Harry did a great job
In a word.....Awesome!
I love love love those old 50's buicks. They are just a sweet all around car, big, comfortable, and stylish. What I'd do to be able to afford a project like this. The other thing I like is you can make then a high gloss show and shine or a rat rod themed primer car
that Mr Fisher is one heck of a cool man ! admirable passion!
"...and just make your car yours". This guy deserves a medal. Period.
the owner is awesome ! Thank you for sharing it and for your advice :)
Nino Cutraro (BM editor extraordinaire) is the MAN when it comes to music. Helps that he's also one helluva musician as well.
This is a man's muscle car. Beautiful, elegant and pin you in the seat blistering power. Best of all, it drives like a normal car.
