Bacterial Pathogenesis: How Bacteria Cause Damage

So we know that there are unbelievable numbers of bacteria inside of us, and some of them are good. So what about the bad ones? What do those do? How do they harm us, exactly? What defenses do we have against them? Let's take a look!

i've always found it fascinating that many times the symptoms of bacterial infection are the result of our immune system's activation. thank you for the video.

You'd think it would rarely be in a bacterium's interest to harm the host enough to make the body react in such a way to attack it.

@@ProfessorDaveExplains Yes, I understand that. I meant "in its interest" as in likely to increase fitness. I wonder why killing the host or being conspicuous enough to cause a reaction against it helps in this "goal." I suppose if syphilis gets a chance to spread to a new host before killing the host, it could be a net win.

I think I heard or red somewhere that the toxins made by bacteria are often it’s waste products, they don’t make them specifically to harm the host they just do. We also have bacteria that are able to live in us without causing damage, like our gut bacteria, but they will cause damage if they get to the wrong tissues, like the skin, instead of where they normally are. I forgot which one it is, but I heard there is a bacteria probably more, that usually don’t cause harm unless they find their way to places where they normally don’t live

Professor Dave! You are fast becoming my Hero! I love these videos.. You said tears contain enzymes that fight bacteria--so does that mean they only fight bacteria they come in contact with as they run down your face? Probably a dumb question :( .

Bacteriocidal enzyme and the high salt content will allow them to kill bacteria on contact. So whether they run down your face and run into bacteria or are bacteria on the eye itself, it'll be effective.
