Wow, for such a straight-forward effect (pun intended), this makes for a really enchanting clip. Even just the way Bobby's facial expressions are reversed at the end-- it creates a whole new story. Thanks for sharing!

To explain for those confused by this: the actual scene was done with the actors moving backwards and the footage was then run in the opposite direction in the film. This created a weird effect where the characters were moving normally but in a slightly off kilter way that generated unease. Also a possible connection to how the speech and motion in the evil Black Lodge was done backwards then played the other way in that famous dream-speech manner.

I think it's just part of David Lynch's artistry when it comes to making a totally mundane scene feel very dream-like or surreal. There's nothing inherently special about Bobby walking backwards, here. But the fact that he does it with such grace and the way nobody around him seems to mind or care, really sets this strangeness in motion. He's a weirdo that nobody acknowledges, not until after Laura's death, then he becomes prime suspect #1, alongside Leo and James.

I saw this thing once that suggested that lies could be distiguished in reverse speach. Something to do with the human thought process and how we go about constructing a lie, apparently its undone in the reverse. The CIA apparently regarded this as a fact for years and have reversed recordings of people to sometimes find what theyre looking for. Something beautiful about a lie being unmade! Sorry ramdom tangent.

Reviving an ancient, long-dead comment to say that the same human pattern-seeking behaviour that leads to the effect known as "paradolia" - ie; seeing faces in things that aren't faces, like sand or gravel or clouds, tree bark, shadows, etc. Is also capable of doing the same thing to speech/noise. It's why people sometimes report hearing voices in allegedly haunted buildings, hear voices on the wind in forests, etc. The human brain is desperate to construct the stimuli it interacts with on a daily basis as something important and critical to it's survival. So when we hear reversed human speech, our brain jumps to interpret it in a way that makes sense to us. Hence, we come up with these crazy theories that we can somehow hear subliminal messaging in reversed speech. But the reality of it is, our mind is just trying to make sense of what clearly sounds like human speech, but definitely doesn't make sense.

Stranger Things has the Upside Down. Twin Peaks has the Black Lodge where everything is both backwards and forwards. An allegory for the antimatter mirror universe where antiparticles spin in reverse, and which is based on e-l-e-c-t-r-i-c-i-t-y (rather than magnetism).
