Nice video! Yes, the migration is on, and Yellow Rumped Warblers are the for leading of the warblers migration, arriving first. Cool to hear the Winter Wren. I have been watching some of the Appalachian Hikers and they were still hearing Winter Wrens in North Carolina where they winter over.

I read about birds and if they tell me about more than one, I get it all mixed up. Same with studying their songs. So I am trying to learn more about the individuals. Warblers, Thrushes, Wrens - they are so awesome!

Lovely, as usual. Jon and I were just talking about revisiting this one since we didn’t realize that the large boulder there (I think it must be the one where you camped) is the Tipping Rock. I think it rocks a little, hence the name. That cookie looked amazing…I hope you ate the whole thing! Carrying a full pack requires calories. 💪🏻

That is funny about the rock. When I found the dead log in the bushes, I wondered if some crazy young guys had maybe tried to pry the rock off the cliff. If I had leaned on the rock and it wobbled, I would have been startled for sure. I think I was sort of afraid to touch it.

Neat, Rachel. Setting up on all that rock, maybe you should get four or so small climbers' brass chocks or nuts that would fit nicely into rock nooks.

I never thought of that. Recently I saw on a Korean camping video, some small metal gadgets that fit perfectly into the cracks of a tent platform! I'd never seen those before.

@@RachelWhelton I picked up those spring/hook contraptions that slip through the slats on tent platforms too. Have yet to use myself. If you try the climbers chocks/nuts ideas and you find them useful, be cool if you posted. Can't be too $$ dear if you get just four. I used to have climbing kit with a mess of them, but my kit got ripped off in storage. My wife and I spent the insurance claim from that on a Katadyn Pocket filter. Thanks for your great posts...

I learned that I like views from the tent. I still fear wind. I think my tent can handle a lot more than these weird gusts. But it's very hard to sleep and a sheltered spot is just plain better. But the view though...

I just found your channel while researching for my upcoming New England motorcycle camping tour. I have been to fourty of the fifty states but I have never been north of Pennsylvania. I and my riding partner will be in the Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine areas in the first two weeks of June (24). I have extensive experience in the southern Appalachia and in all the Rockies, but I have no idea what to expect from the campgrounds in the N.E.. I also have no experience with the weather there in early June. You seem very calm and collected. I do not wish to take too much of your time, but it there are one or two big “no/no’s I would accept any advise. Thank you and thanks for the calm well photographed videos.

Thanks! This will be a great adventure for you. Try local food places. I am not sure when you will hit it but if you happen to come to a campground and find lots of biting black flies or mosquitoes, get spray and a battery operated repellant machine to make things bearable. Or seek out a breezy place to avoid them, like the ocean. I'm guessing you might be visiting Bike Week in Laconia. There are many scenic roads and backroads. I'm sure you will discover loads of ideas in your research.

Another beautiful video Rachel! I’m getting up my courage and collecting the gear to do what you’re doing. I’m so envious of you and have learned a lot through your videos. Do you ever get a little freaked out at night when you’re alone? That’s the part I’m a little nervous about. I think after I do it once or twice that will pass though. You do such a great job!! Beautiful sunrise! I was up on Tecumseh that day and it was a perfect one. A little windy but otherwise a bluebird day for sure! Love your videos and looking forward to the next! Question: I was going to do Cannon mountain soon and wanted to get your advice as to which trail you’d recommend. Lonesome Lake Trail to Kinsman ridge trail or the High Cannon trail? It’s liable to be a little icy so what do you think?

  • @RachelWhelton

I really liked the Hi-Cannon trail but that was a warm, dry day with no ice. I've seen in winter some people do the Cannon Mountain trail. If you look up Laura Soule on KZread, she shows videos of both those trails in other conditions than my one video of it.

At home, at night, when I think of being out there alone, it feels terrifying. But when I get out there and get a feel for the surroundings, I feel totally fine. Alert - yes - but fine. Funny enough, on this trip, in the middle of the night, I woke to a noise right outside my tent. I was breathing heavily and sweating and yelled out "YAHHHHH" in a loud and mean voice! I thought "that can't be a bear, no...." I think it must have been that big log tied to my tent, maybe shifting on the rock in a gust of wind. I looked out and there was nothing to be seen, so I went back to sleep. But this is the only time so far I felt fear like that, and it subsided as quickly as it came.

@@RachelWhelton Thanks Rachel! I follow the Soules KZread channel regularly and love their content! Love their videos and thank you for the suggestion. I hadn’t even considered seeing if they have any videos of those routes. I’ll check them out. I watched a video of yours, I think it was the Zealand trail one, where you met them on the trail! My two favorite KZreadrs together in the same video! I always wonder when I’m hiking if I’m gonna come across you or them! What a surprise that would be! Take care! Oh by the way, did you happen to see the Soules most recent video? They finished the grid finally just this last Monday! The same day you were out on Black mountain and I was on Tecumseh! Great for them! That’s a lot of hiking. 🙂

@@RachelWhelton That’s kinda scary! I think I would’ve done the same and yelled out to hopefully scare whatever’s out there away!🙂 You must have laughed to yourself when you discovered it was probably just the log moving😂! How’s your sleep quality when your out in your tent at night? I think I’d be pretty restless just because you’re always alert and not sleeping in your own bed in your house.
