Jason, nice video! It was good to meet you in person at the end of the trail. You put some long days in and would have caught up to us by mid day had the hike been longer. Very fun trail... wet and wild with way to much stinging nettle.

My advice, get into herbology and you will understand just how amazing stinging nettle is! It makes hiking through it so much more enjoyable when you know just how good for you it is.

But yes, the east end of the Quehanna, especially going towards Wykoff Rd is loaded with nettle

It is a deer feeder to put 🌽 corn in.

Jason, I REALLY ENJOY YOU! You are incredible in my book! It touched me when you shared about your Uncle and his paraplegic condition. (God Bless him!) It hit me hard since my son became a paraplegic four years ago. We live in Colorado - the Fourteener State. Most of our hikes were beautiful day-hikes. (I grew up living close to Pikes Peak - and, later, Longs Peak... On their summits many times...) Such beauty here in the Centennial State. My heart breaks every day when I realize my son and I can no longer be trail partners. I sincerely applaud you, Jason. You do all these incredible videos and you never use any coarse language! I love it! You are tops!!!! I HIGHLY respect you!! I wish you were my next-door neighbor! :-) I still hike - although more slowly. I just turned 80 years old. I love God's Book of Nature... I put this on my list. I always wondered about it because I used to trive by that and the boys camp on my way to my uncle's hunting cabin. Haven't been up that way in a long time. Maybe I'll try to do that mid May to cut down on some of the overgrowth.

Jason, great video; maybe your best one yet. Thanks for showing the trail. Recipe idea: trail tacos - Knorr Spanish rice, cook then spoon into shells or wraps, top with cut up fresh tomato and taco sauce. One of my favorites.

I have video of my Nephew and his friends jumping into Wykoff a little up that road from Laurel Draft(Wykoff Run Rd). Smart move not camping near the road...it can be busy. I love the trail and it's on my bucket list. You can connect with the Doughnut Hole trail. And I have herd of people being killed by widow markers. And I don't blame you for camping by the road for safety and solitude reasons.

My favorite trail. Seen 3 rattlesnakes on it. Amazing country. Ya the shadows and trees play tricks on you eyes.Spring fall best for better trail conditions.

The numbers on posts are markers for state forest car camping sites. Great video.

My go to wrap when packing is tortilla, peanut butter, honey, and fritos on it. Great calories, quick, and oh so good!

Jason - I really enjoyed your adventure on the Quehanna Trail. Great video! Beautiful trail and I loved the variety of scenery. Indeed...Stinging Nettle sucks. Surprised you said it's difficult for you to identify Poison Ivy. Just remember, "Leaves of Three, Let it Be!" Yeah... you are lucky that dead widowmaker didn't fall on you. Yikes!

Jason - I'm glad you finally made it to another one of the areas I go to on a pretty frequent basis. Ain't it amazing how those stumps look like bear? LOL My friend and I did a little over 17 miles in 3 days/2 nights in early May. The place looked quite a bit different then from what it does in your video !! We didn't have to deal with stinging nettle when we went. ;) I do believe that the structure that you thought was some type of bee hive early in the video is actually a deer feeder. Although, I don't think they are using these feeders like they have in the past because chronic wasting disease has been a concern in the area for a while now and it gets spread within the deer herd by deer who drop food from their mouths at these feeders. They are especially concerned about CWD in this area because it is a threat to the elk herd who call this area home. When you were confused at about 1:00:07 in the video, I think it's because several years ago they rerouted the main trail. If you get your map back out and look, you'll see a yellow line that goes from about mile 61.1 and ties back in at about 65.5. That USED to be the main trail. Why they rerouted it I do not know. That's called the Bear Run Trail now. Did you double back on yourself at some point there? I ask because I recognize that Camp Harvey as a place I pass when I camp on Medix Run Rd. Anyhow, I took a few pictures when I was there in May and have them posted on my Facebook photography page. The Buff is back! Great solo trip and good mileage on those soon to be AT trail legs. Awesome streams and water crossings on this trip. Lots of KZread backpackers showing PA a lot of love here lately. I noticed you said you hit “Jerry Run” at mile 37 1/2. You sure that wasn’t Whiskey Run? Thought you might have found it this time. Yes have done it 2 times up and down...ps will be flowing u on the AT... been following Gary...a great trail only few people I saw when I did it.. I did not see any bears but they around mosquito creek from a local.. my cell phone got ruined crossing that creek hit a deep pool.. the bridge was still up but had caution tape around it....does not seem to get much use....I just remember doing it in the fall when my eagles had Michael Vick and I spoke to DNR man to get the scores ... they lost....I remember Jerry run the decent on my aching knees...

Nice solo trip Jason.....one more for me to add to the list in PA! Finally got my LHHT shelters booked for fall :) btw the rain quilt looked great :) haven't had a chance to use mine yet! Sucks about the insoles....never had any problems with my 3.0's yet.

My latest trip I did cold lunches, peanut butter and honey on tortillas, simple, fast and tasty, not pulling out and setting up the stove was great. I can see the attraction of going stoveless but still enjoy a hot meal and coffee too much to leave it at home.

loving all of this green beautiful forest hiking, i could go on all day so ill just mention/ that joke was Terrible hahahaha!! ps proudly displaying your sticker on the back of my truck alongside many many national park stickers (and a couple other youtubers)

Interesting adventure Jason watch out for those bears. And you didn't get lost this time even with the reroutes. you need to get acquainted with poison oak it will be on the AT.

Well, I did briefly near the bridge the first day. I quickly figured it out. I didn't get any rash this trip surprisingly with all of the overgrowth that I walked through

those things you asked about in the beginning are turkey and deer feeders they throw animal corn on the cobs in there and the animals feed on that throughout the winter

I was laughing when you said something about your hand writing because I thought the same exact thing the first day you wrote something. Their hand writing was so nice and then you put your chicken scratch down. LOL Anyways just wanted to say I enjoyed the video and I will stop commenting before I get a stalker notification. LOL

You just about convinced me to invest in the rain skirt! I’ve come across smaller patches and let’s just say it is memorable. In the summer months I just prefer running shorts. So when I do BFT or some of the other trails in that same region I’ll have to do something.

Fashion? I was honestly testing out tying plastic shopping bags around my knees to cover my lower legs! 😆 So a rain skirt might improve my fashion sense.

Cool trail. It would be nice to do in the Winter once they replace the bridge. FYI- don't ever wash your Altra shoes. They'll fall apart and It'll void the warranty. I ruined a pair and found out the hard way despite no washing or warranty instructions posted on their site. Thanks for the videos.

I usually take a soft bristle brush to then at the end of each trip. Seems good enough. Sometimes I sorry odor eating stuff inside.

Ugh...the stinging nettles on that trail are the worst I've ever hiked through. Was just like you and singing/cussing them the whole way up the drafts. Great video and good luck with your AT prep!

The Sole active footbeds are 0 drop. I use them in my lone peaks. Especially love having them in rocky terrain like the Whites.

Can you feel the toe area drop off since the are less wide?

The toe area comes pretty wide and you cut them to fit the shoe. The arch support is a bit much (I have the thick) which irritates the skin after a few days, might try the medium.

Just listen to Three Days Grace the mountain-good song 😀

That's the trouble with driving stakes into PA ground. Usually rock right under the dirt.

Jason that’s a Deer Feeder... you load it with corn from the top and they pick at it between the slats

That’s our camp by the lot with the map and yes it’s a deer feeder. It was left from previous owner. Hasn’t been used in many years but we may try storing honey now. :) Great video, enjoy the trail and the beautiful forest. We do our best to take care of the area around that lot and past our camp but PLEASE watch for rattlesnakes in July/August especially. We have had elk pass through also which is amazing to see.

Tortilla with a motz string cheese stick and loads of pepperoni or a tortilla with Mountain house lasagna and a cheese stick. My favorites haha

Hey man, your videos are outstanding. I have a suggestion for you, assuming you may be starting to train your body for next year, take a look at the Northville-Placid Trail (NPT) in New York. I believe it's 130 miles or so? Anyway, thought it may be a good trail to hit sometime before 2019 to help with PT. Keep the videos coming man.. their always appreciated....

Wow, I never heard about that trail and it's only 2 hrs away. It looks somewhat maintained to. I'm guessing the heat wave missed you over there? We got hammered in Lancaster for almost that whole week. Roads where melting and people were dropping like flies just mowing their grass. It was crazy. 80 and sunny tomorrow, heading out to French Creek

Wyckoff run is an awesome motorcycle road.. but I’d bet there is no traffic at night...

i live in the North Central area for a couple years now. Would love to try that trail sometime. I tried the Mid State trail for several miles. Rocks arent discouraging too much but the rattlesnakes are. Wondering if any backpackers use snake gaiters since boots are heavy.

I had to watch this video again since you recommended it on the live stream. You could't get any of the stakes into the ground! It must have been a rocky area or gravel. That's when I usually have problems and have used rocks or logs like you did.

“Ha, I’ve beaten you!” That reminded me so much of an anime type conversation. 😆 ETA: I just had to redo the DWR on my helium II for the same reason. Works pretty well now and no need to replace it. $20 at REI for the nikwax tech wash and dwr wash.

Dude, awesome trip. I've done two trips there, but I've never done the whole thing...think that should be on my itinerary for next year. Maybe I'll invest in a UL flamethrower for the nettle.

Awesome! watched the whole thing while doing treadmill; have to try to strengthen my quadriceps because insurer does not want to fix my torn ACL with surgery, and even if I do surgery I read it is better recovery if doing some physio first before it. In the treadmill did 3.30 miles in the time this video runs walking @ 2.5 mile pace and it feels kind of workout to me, I wonder how long to be in condition to hit a real trail, the nearest ones I have are Cathedral Trail in Mt. Charleston which it is very short but kind of steep somehow @ 2.2 miles each way and Hidden Forest in Deadman's Canyon which is 4.8 miles each way with a 2000 Ft elevation gain and extremely rocky; if I can walk those trails without my knee giving up, I know I can do better and better after and maybe could even desist from fixing the knee with surgery; pending goal is to climb Mt. Witney (11 miles going from 8500 Ft to 14500) which I could not do back in 2016 because I was so out of shape and totally unprepared for the climb, not properly acclimated and hydrated for the height. Shedding out 60 pounds would help tremendously but I do not see doing that with just treadmill hikes here and there and even with real hikes! so may as well not worry too much about the weight which persists because my lack of will and hike the hell out all I can anyway I can while I can!

Rody, don't worry about speed, develop your stamina with time spent walking with good form. Also forget Mt. Charleston and climbing as a starting point. Plenty of small ups and downs where you are in Red Rock Canyon. My 2 cents.

cool video, fall is best time , shocked you dint see any rattlesnakes or elk, there are a lot of those stump bears . :)

Really great news about your AT announcement! Concerning your insoles slipping: try double sided tape. It really sticks. While mine is very old it is still sticky but I am unsure if it will s really waterproof but There may be a water proof brand.

Do you know if you will be doing daily updates on the AT or every few days.

It took me a long time to get here and lots of tweaking my setup over the years. Not too many ups and downs in PA in my opinion. ViewRanger is a great app, a littler over complicated for what it does though.

Does is bug you that they don’t sell the 1l smart water bottles with sports caps so you have to buy the small ones just for the sports caps

Stinging nettle is a very healthy food.............I eat some every day!

Packit Gourmet's All American Works Burger is my favorite tortilla meal.

The reroute at the end of day three is a permanent route to get around the bridge at Medix Run that keeps getting washed out,much like the Bridge at Mosquito creek that keeps getting washed out.....sorry about blowing up the comments with all my post but this is the only video on youtube showing the whole quehanna trail so figured would add some info for the next guy watching......a little history lesson on the Eastern edge of the trail...just North of Piper,PA used to be a aircraft test facility where they were experimenting with nuclear reactors for aircraft propulsion.....there used to be a small 1 Mega Watt reactor on site to provide electricity and such for the Facility.....

Hey Jason! Quite coincidental you just hiked the Quehanna trail. This past Winter my buddy and I decided we were going to hike it this August. We're also planning to do it over 4 days as well. Any suggestions/recommendations/advice for campsites, mileage you would have done differently, etc? I have a thing about watching trip videos before I get to experience the trail myself, so I'm going to hold off on watching yours until after our trip (which I'm sure would answer most of my questions, but oh well). Thanks!

Day 1 I would find a campsite before you head downhill Day 2 camp where I did. It's amazing! Day 3 head to the top of that draft there are a ton of amazing sites. (get water near the top of the draft (right before my camp site)) Hope that helps. watch the video again with the tips above in mind and you should have a perfect experience. Have fun. Please let me know how it goes.

Check out Evan's Backpacking videos. He's currently hiking the entire Appalachian Trail in sandals. He can definitely offer more insight than I can.

Trail looks interesting. Looks like a cool adventure. Too bad about the shoes. I was looking into a pair but not so sure. Have to add the cost of insoles.

Outdoor Adventures It's a known issue. A lot of folks just glue the insoles in. Have a search on BPL or Reddit UL

From what I’ve seen you can make soup from nettles. Not that I would want to lol.

Nice trip Frozen! Any idea what your elevation gain/loss was per day, I’m curious. Also, the upside down pyramid could of been a man-made bat nest, we have a few of them here.

I know it wasn't much. There were only 1 or 2 drafts that were hard. Namely purcupine draft.

question about Knorr sides. Do you have a rule of thumb about how much less water to use when on the trail? I tried in the kitchen and had Spanish rice soup, then I found out you use less liquid when re-hydrating in the bag. Bruce from the city of orange in orange county calif.

Some describe the Quehanna as "Pennsylvania's Dolly Sods", how does it compare? It certainly looks less rocky and muddy. Would you say it's easier or about the same in terms of difficulty? I just got back from the Dolly Sods and am planning a Quehanna wild adventure next, but want to be prepared

I feel there are 2 completely different trails. Quehanna wasn't hard though but neither is the Sods.

Im going to try spam singles with mustard on a wrap for a wrap mealthis weekend I'll let you know
