John , They have more then just the Ferro Rod. Tortoise Gear has the Firefly and Helix Tinder fire starting items for Swiss Army Knives. The Firefly is a ferro rod that fits in the toothpick of tweezers part of the knife. The Helix Tinder goes in the screwdriver area. Or you can combine the 2 with the Fireant Firestarter which are both items that buddy up in the screwdriver area of the knife. I have several of my Swiss Army Knives equipped as emergency fire starting kits. I like to have my gear do more then one job if it's possible. In a emergency you stand the best shot of having your knife on you ( especially if your are wearing your pants ) when everything else could be lost.

Hangtime hook is great. I purchased an adaptor for my Fire tablet ,so that I can stream video on a larger screen in the back yard.

I really like the Mora Knife. Gotta love the silky saw!!! Thanks for the shoutout too. I was surprised how good that little knife was. Cool stuff and video brother 👍🏻👍🏻

Mora knives are excellent knives and stunningly sharp for the price. But despite his suggestion they are not designed to stand up to batoning if that’s something you want to do.

Victorinox Classic is really the only knife a thru-hiker would need.

Legit just bought that coffee drip for a secret santa this year for a fellow backpacker that loves coffee. She was over the moon and cant wait to try it.

I have that little knife. Very handy. I just ordered another for my every day bag.

As for the saw i would recommend Silky F180 same cutting performance, but with much lighter plastic handle. ;)

Another quality video John. Thanks. I've stumbled across a company that makes powered espresso. Not instant but actually like dehydrated/freeze dried/ powered stuff. When you pour in the hot water it forms crema and the taste is spot on. It makes you want to carry a twist of lemon and biscotti on trail. Since I'm going to take it on the AT with me, I'll probably pop out a video on it in the next couple of months.

One of my new favorites are the little towels that you put water on and they expand into a washcloth (sorry don’t know what they are called) and the water activated soap strips. Also I found a coffee at REI that comes in a filter AND has paper legs to attach onto your cup Excited to try it out.

John! Great video! The ferro rod in the tiny pocket knife is a brilliant hack and great idea on the hammock buddy for tenters too, Deff thought of it as only a hammock item until you noted that. Only downside of this whole video was not including your great intro guitar riff. Real talk, I always love that 😊

Tea bag coffee works great as well. Nothing beats the OG Swiss Knife, small or next size up

John, I really enjoy your videos. I have never watched a movie on the trail, however I can relate to the kids watching movies over and over until they could recite word by word the entire movie. If we would have had cellphones when my kids were that age I would have been watching movies on the trail. Happy Hiking

The hardware kit is a great idea, I broke the waist belt buckle on day two of a 5 day trip through Pictured Rocks. Having an extra buckle saved the day, wish I had a patch kit for my self inflating pad with me!

The hang time hooks are great, especially in the winter when it’s cold and you just want to be bundled up in your hammock. I like the coffee buddy, it sits down in your cup and you can let it steep a bit for stronger coffee

4:20. We had a big windstorm a few weeks ago so the trails are full of downed trees. I was so glad to have my folding saw last weekend. At one point I was using it so much that I quit putting it back in my pack pocket. Lol. Mine’s a corona brand, which is pretty nice, but I’d like to try a silky sometime.

Check out the Sea to Summit replacement buckles. Justin pointed me to those. They have removable posts to replace buckles that have sewn loops.

Love the videos sir! I really enjoy the Swiss Army Classic SD and I was carrying the Mora Firestarter too, but what I found that works well and saved me weight was getting the Swiss Army Evolution S14. If you add the FireAnt ferro rod and tinder system into the corkscrew, for me, it eliminated the need to carry the other tools. I also carry a saw so I didn't really need to baton wood. But with this tool the scissors are better than the SD, the blades are larger (you could def cut steak with it!), the large blade is locking, and you get the added bonus of the other tools as well. Not for everyone but it works for me!

@@johnherbst1553 It's the FireAnt Fire Starter and Tinder system, fits onto the corkscrew of a Swiss Army knife and it has a ferro rod with tinder as well. It's not a primary source of fire starting, but certainly an adequate backup.

I mainly pressed the like button only for the Encanto mention 😅

Tenacious Tape FTW! I've had some on a burn hole on my Chair Zero for over two years and it's still holding strong. I also have it on a puffy that got ripped by thorns. I'm in the market for a new saw--it'll either be the Sven Saw or Silky Pocketboy.

Where to get ferro rod for small Swiss knife? Still have my coffee maker. Recommend them quite a bit. Still use neck gaiter for phone battery and glasses in hammock. Light solid color works best. You can see right through it at night. Try it in store sometime you'll see what I mean.

Justin (It's Good in the Woods) pointed me to the Sea to Summit replacement buckles. They are pricier than the ones you have but they have some with removable posts so that you can replace a buckle on a sewn loop. For the knife, I've replaced the Victorinox SD with a Gerber Dime. I like that it's got scissors and mini pliers. The pliers have come in very handy around camp. I've mentioned this before, my coffee go to is the Primula Brew Buddy. Similar to to your java drip, but instead of legs, it has a ring and it sits inside the coffee cup so you can let the coffee steep in the hot water for a stronger brew. Lastly, I would be careful batoning firewood with the Morakniv ferro rod knife. I've heard that you have a greater risk of breaking the blade off the handle if you use a knife that isn't a full tang.

I have all of those! All great products. Another fantastic video JK! Small things can make all the difference.

Nice video JK. The old-school mail-order catalog I used to get about 8 times a year in the mail was from Campmor. Campmor had all that little stuff that you need. They are still around but they missed the boat when everyone started going internet and they are not as good as they used to be. Coghlan is the company that sell a bunch of that kind of stuff. My favorite is the 2-egg container. Let's you pack out 2 eggs with you on an overnight.

The little Swiss Army knife is a great tool. The finger nail file is useless to my needs so I grind or file an edge on one or both sides for an extra utility blade. Love the tooth pick and tweezers so I pass on the ferro mod

John, thanks for the continuing great gear reviews and recommendations. Question: do you have any thoughts or recommendations for medium teeth vs large teeth for the Silky PocketBoy saw?

because we hike as a couple, my wife and i actually bear the weight and bring a wacaco nanopresso with an adapter that lets us have fresh espresso on the trail. it weighs in around a pound.

Do you have any videos related to reviews of portable solar panels or lightweight charging packs?

I recently started bringing a pocket chainsaw on trips that I’m going to be spending time with a campfire. It weighs less than a folding saw, and cuts quite a bit faster and with less effort!

@@Doc_Watson I’m not sure what brand it is. I got it on Amazon a couple years ago. It’s definitely not the best of the bunch, but I enjoy using it far more than any folding saws I’ve used. One of these days I’ll probably give it to one of my kids, and at that point I’ll probably spend a little more and get a Nordic.

@@JeremiahBlasi Mine too is from Amazon from a couple years ago. Looks like a chainsaw chain and has teeth in both directions. It does work pretty good. Works better than the folding saw my buddy picked up in Wal-mart camping section. I had picked up a REXBETI 11" dry wood pruning saw last year on Amazon for just under $15 and that works really well.

I carry the Swiss knife and honestly use the scissors the most, cutting finger nails and opening food like tuna etc so it's neat and clean. What do you recommend for mounting a smartphone on a trekking pole? Cheers

@@cheri7828 you can take some cordage and attach it to both ends of the tent. A lot of tents have places where you can connect it. Just hang the hook from that line.

“don’t be watching videos on the trail or while camping you need to enjoy nature” Bruh I will never understand people with this mentality. That they think they can tell others what to do. Or as if everyone must enjoy nature the exact same way as them, because what actually makes it hard to enjoy nature is the fun police, the people that think they need to make a million different little rules for everyone. They can’t understand that some people can still enjoy nature while having a podcast on in the background or watch a video or movie to fall asleep to.
