An absolutely great job of capturing the essence of Cumberland Island. Thanks so much for this wonderful gift. Plan on my seventh (or more) backpacking trip there in late February 20223.

Oh man, another instant BTC classic this was!! Such a great adventure you and Amy got to experience. You documented it wonderfully well. I have so many great things to say about what you shared with us through your lens and creative vision: -Love the tropical music additions that complemented the scenery so well -So much wildlife on this trip! Can’t believe y’all got to see so much, and that you were able to get so close to so many of the creatures to film them. A few of the highlights were the lizard at --7:31--, the crab at --9:29--, starfish at --10:00--, super cool macro armadillo at --11:11--, lizard out of the stump at --18:53--, crabs emerging from the sand at --16:09--, horses fighting at --19:39--, frogs eerily croaking at --24:34--, the poignantly said “GA” whippoorwills at --25:04-- (totally agree- Ky whip’s sound way different) -The golden hour sunlight at 12:46, along with the sunset time lapse along the shore at 14:09, were breathtaking -What kind of trees were in the background of your campsite at 15:09? They looked so exotic and wild! -Your unique camp set up shots at around 17:10 were super cool, especially inside the backpack -I loved your comment about the “iron waves” of the Atlantic and that whole scene of the vastness of the lonely ocean, it was humbling to listen to. -One thing I notice in your videos is that you let your shots “breathe”; you don’t rush off to the next shot or scene (which I am incredibly guilty of in my videos), but stay in the moment of what you’re filming and let it unfold, it’s super engaging. -You were right about those hogs being fast; they looked like black streaks across the forest floor! -Your bloopers are always on point, and I find it incredibly ironic you and Amy were talking about pooping in the woods blooper, and your next trip you and I somehow wound up talked about it all the time too haha! -You and Amy should be incredibly proud of accomplishing this backpacking trip- it never looked so rewarding to hike 30miles when y’all got to the end! As always, fantastic job! Can’t wait for the next one!

Thank you, thank you! You've made me feel much better about this video after being a little disappointed with it at first. The wildlife was definitely the highlight of the trip. Every time we turned around there was another animal. And yeah, even though none of them were tame, it seemed like we were able to get close to many of them. It added to the magical feeling of the place. I'm glad you noticed the skinks coming out of the log, haha. And isn't it interesting how those whippoorwills sounded different than ours? The trees at the campsite were live oaks, as far as I know. But they were growing more horizontally than most of the others we saw. They really help create the unique atmosphere of the place. I'm really glad to hear that you find the longer shots engaging. I used to assume that people would find them boring and that they would stop watching unless I was cutting to a new shot every few seconds. But the more I try longer shots, the more I like them. I think that if the shot is interesting, your eyes want to spend more than a few seconds "exploring" the scene, so I've let them run longer. That's hilarious about the pooping conversation 😂 It just becomes a topic of conversation on a backpacking trip! I believe I have some footage of you and me talking about poop on the TT, so this might not be my last poop blooper! It did feel like an accomplishment, and I'm glad I'm not the only one telling Amy she should be proud. It was a tougher hike than it appeared, and that rest at the end was well-earned. Thanks again for watching and for taking time to share all your thoughts. I really appreciate it, and I'm looking forward to your next video as well!

Just beautiful! My husband grew up going to Cumberland Island and started taking me in the 90s. We have also taken our now grown boys several times. I noticed that you arrived and departed from the Dungeness dock. Are they not requiring campers to listen to the Ranger's speak about what to do and what not to do while on the island?

  • @beyondthecampfire

Thank you! The Sea Camp Dock was under construction at the time, so they took us to Dungeness instead. We didn't know that in advance, so it required adjusting our route slightly. And they gave us the Ranger talk back in St. Mary's, then asked us to check in with a Ranger on the island before heading into the backcountry. Thanks for watching!

I have heard that it gets pretty buggy in the summer. We were there in late March, and the only buggy spot was Brickhill Bluff. I think as long as you're prepared with Deet/permethrin/head nets/etc. you'll be okay. I'd say it's worth it even if the bugs are bad.
