After the bass player quit while we were on the road, I got home and started programing midi files back in 98, and was never more busier playing guitar and singing at all sorts of venues up until 2010, doing a 1 man band.

Fantastic video! Videos like this are gold especially for hobbyists like myself; even if it's stuff I already "know", there's usually quite a few unexpected holes in my knowledge that I didn't know existed. Sometimes we learn how to run before walking through necessity, and seeing a video like this that breaks it down into steps and goes from start to finish helps fill in the unknown unknowns! Edit: was also going to say, if you're a vocalist only, and need all the instrumentals on a backing track, Karaoke Version charges only 1.99 for their non-stemmed backing tracks (options are usually just "instrumental only", "instrumental and background vocals, no lead", and "complete cover" for their vocal tracks)

Scott! Long time lurker here and a huge fan of your content. I used to use Logic for making tracks but have transitioned to Ableton recently. Some great ideas I learned from this video… bouncing the click audio to a MIDI click and leaving in the little lyric cues in the ears 🤯 Really cool stuff and thank you tremendously for all you do in the Helix/MIDI/Tracks/Life in general space! Big fan!

Wow, ❤ amazing. Im 69 years old played professionally in the 70s and 80s them later worship team in a church. In the 70s my rig was mt amp, either a dual showman or ampeg V4 , a cry baby wah, Gibson les paul and a Gibson L6S the set neck one. Basically there wasn’t much for tech. In the 60s it was often hard to find a dedicated bass amp. The dual showman was for guitar if you had the JBL D130s and for bass JBL d140, I HAD A SOLID STATE ACOUSTIC AMP AND CAB THAT SAID RIGHT ON THE HEAD GUITAR/BASS. THE BASS MAN WAS UNDER POWERED, ACTUALLY EVERYTHING WAS UNDERPOWERED FOR BASW EXCEPT THE SUN 360. THAT AMPEG I FORGOT THE MODEL. IT WASNT TILL MID TO LATE 80S BASS APS CAME AROUND. ANYWAY, UNTIL I SAW YOUR VIDEO I HAD NEVER HEARD OF DOING BACKING TRACKS LIKE THAT. I KNOW THE Bee Gees used a system like that and it was amazing. They had a special toward the end where thr first twin died, and they did a song for Andy. It was a real tear jerker where they surprised the audience dimmed the lights Andy came in at the second verse, the brothers just sang backup and it sounded exactly like Andy was up there singing with him. Your young so in case you dont know in the 80s Andy gib was the 4th brother who started a solo career, his brothers helped. He became number 1 pop and teen heart throb. Had trouble with drugs nd rinsing and had a heart attack and died on his thirtieth birthday. If you’ve never seen them it’s called Bee Gees how can you mend a broken heart. It’s on max maybe Netflix too. Inspirational. Sounds like you play everything. I love all music except for rasp. Believe it kr not rap. Started in the mid 70s. I couldent get into it. Sorry for the long message but im just excited. Im going to share this with some old band mates. This system you do is incredible. At my age a couple of my music mates are dead, so i can still get together with a few survivors and gig again without a full band. Or just pratice with my friends. Anyway, this is the most professional , helpful . Videos I’ve ever seen for musicians. Thank you so much. At my age there’s gonna be a learning curve and i dont know how far ill get but i am super grateful. I’ll be around bro.,

Much worship bands use also backings. In some cases to blow up the sound with pads and additional vocals. I have an interactive hardware solution. This creates drums and guitar and the vocal harmonizer adds a choir, so I can emulate up to 5 additional musicians and 3 more singers. But I have the freedom, to change the order. Okay, I could also spontaneously add another song, but the man, who projects the lyrics and my fellow musicians couldn't follow.

Scott, I've just become aware of you and your videos. It's fascinating watching this because it's so similar to what I've been doing. It's validating to see someone else doing it like this. Thank you.

Correct spelling is KARAOKE. It is a Japanese word. “Kara” means “empty” and “Oke” is an abbreviation for “orchestra.”

Thanks Scott. One thing I don't think you mentioned or I missed it is 90% of Karaoke-version tracks are not recorded to a click track. You can tell because in the upper left area where they give the tempo, they say "About" 136 BPM. I have found some horrible variations in speed that initially frustrated our drummer. Almost every track of theirs is off. Most DAW's have some kind of ability to stretch or shrink a track. In Ableton Live it's "Warp". I use this on every track to make sure the track is exactly aligned to the tempo grid. I start out aligning markers to quarter notes and then zoom in to 32nds. It's amazing how much variation there can be. This adds about 10-15 minutes of work per track but greatly worth it. Now the song is in perfect time and can use it to sync MIDI or other future tracks, no sweat.

Yeah, some of them have definitely been frustrating, but usually okay to deal with. Does the warp feature allow you to warp all the audio and stuff so it’s exactly on the tempo? If so, I’ll have to look at that for some of the songs for sure! Thanks for the tip

Although….there are some instances where songs breathe here and there with tempo fluctuations. Being super strict on tempo is great most of the time, but not always. Case in point “Man In The Box”. Verses are slower than the choruses. Get a click going when the song starts. Leave the click at the same tempo when the chorus hits and it’s going to feel very draggy. Just an observation.

I enjoy your videos Scott - and even though I've been creating and using backing tracks for 5 or 6 years, I've still learned a few things from you! At 16:07 ish, you talk about creating mono tracks out of stereo in Logic. When I build my backing tracks (with KaraokeVersion), I pan my parts there before downloading, so when I download two different keyboard parts for instance... I pan them hard left and hard right. That gives me two separate MONO tracks to work with once I import them into Pro Tools. For me, that's a much quicker and more efficient approach. Am I mistaken, or is this the easier way to do it?

Oh interesting! And that gives you both the left and right summed down to mono? Meaning you do not miss whatever is panned to the right if you pan it to the left?

@@ScottUhlMusic Yes, I believe that is correct. Another benefit is I can download the tracks in half the time. I pan all parts to L and R... (Drums on the Left, Bass on R for instance.) I can download an entire multi-track song very quickly. The other thing I do is comp tracks that are mostly dead space (like FX or sparse keys) Sometimes you can pan two different guitar parts to the Left side and still not have them overlap if they are not playing at the same time. That way I can download potentially 3 or 4 parts to a single L and R track. (two MONO summed tracks) Let me know if that makes sense, or if it's helpful at all. For me it's a huge time saver!!

Just to clarify, if you hear a keyboard part that has a different Left vs Right recording, you download it twice, once panned hard left and once panned hard right?

Where can I see you use these backing tracks live as a solo act or trio? I’ve done backing tracks before but I just have more fun building loops live- curious on how you incorporate all of it😊

@@ScottUhlMusic I’m considering adding that to my trio here in Jax FL - could be a great solution to some of our materials- the main reason we never did is our drummer wasn’t able to play to a click- so we are always more “free flowing”. I’ll check out the other projects you mentioned :)

This is actually a really cool idea. I'm currently working on a Solo album and record all instruments myself over drum tracks I make. Usually when I practice the songs I write, I will play my guitar over the backing tracks I made and wondered if anyone else does this too, or if it would even work in a live setting without a full band. Cool to know that there are others who do this also. I really like your idea of using cues going straight into the in ears, really helpful advice!

Glad I found this. I actually do almost everything you do but for solo-performing so it was nice to see your choices and learning has been similar to mine. I started creating tracks in the early 2000s and evolved from CD to mini-disc to laptop and now use iPad with iPhone as backup. One of the first tracks I created using instruments (Dance The Night Away by The Mavericks) took me about 40 hours to complete. I then discovered a STEM version on karaoke-version which cost just £1.99. Game over. I spend a lot of (enjoyable) time editing arrangements and adding touches to tracks and start exactly like you do by buying the STEMs and bouncing via Logic One thing I'd say is about sound quality. Of course we know about the mono versus stereo concept (although most DJs don't) but I found that when I used a laptop the sound quality was much worse than mini-disc. I bought a USB-connected external sound-card which vastly improved the output quality in timers of dynamics but by far the best is an iPad. Most non-Apple laptops have a single mini-jack stereo output port for connecting headphones. I found these were the cheapest component of even expensive laptops. However, even a basic iPad has fantastic audio output quality in comparison so I'd recommend it to everyone. Thanks for a great video, now going to watch your other ones! Take care
