I really needed to see this. This just happened to me tonight. The exact same situation at a LOVES in Missouri. I couldn't successfully back in to a very crowded and tight spot. As I was starting to leave, a flat bed pulled out of the spot next to the spot I was going for which was the extra space I needed. I was still discouraged and disappointed in myself so I came to KZread, saw this video and it lifted my spirits. Thank you for sharing

Tbh i get out at docks in tight spots sometimes up to 5x times sometimes I’ll see people get irritated with me but I’d rather be 110% certain I’m making it without hitting anything. Best to get out and look a few times then deal with the after math of a hit in my opinion.

This is where I'm at right now. I just finished training... took my solo upgrade test 2wks early, bc they reviewed footage of me on the road.. yes we have driver/ road view cameras in the truck. Anyways.. took my test early, passed. I was averaging 620m a day in training. First week of solo driving.. they sent me to every tight spot they could think of seemed like. Had my nerves tore all to shit. My training was a joke. He did 1 pre trip my whole training.. well, I wanted to quit. They put me team driving to get myself back in good spirits. But I'm still feeling very weary of my tight backing spots. If I have real estate I'm good. But the tight backs are probably going to make me quit. I just wished I had a better trainer or someone to actually train me... FML

What I like about this video is how different it is from other fails it is. The others are somebody making fun of a guy having a hard time instead of helping out. This one, the guy is self-critiquing what he didn't do in order to learn and teach. Good job, man!

+Christopher Pearce What does that have to do with my comment? I like watching this video because it is self critiquing rather than a shaming video by a super Trucker recording a rookie having a hard time backing into an easy spot, when the super trucker could get out and help said rookie.

You obviously can like a video for whatever reason you wish... what difference does that make to me? I could care less about your likes/dislikes. My point is simply, that if you cannot do the job... don't do it. If you need a trainer/co-driver... get one. I am not sorry, if you don't like my response. Reread your second sentence and think, then you may understand my response. I know my initial response came off as "cold", but it is fair and true.

When I saw the title of the video, "... tight truck stop", my first thought was "I wonder if it's as tight as the Loves in Tacoma, Washington?". As soon as I saw the fuel pumps and the scale, I knew it was that same one! I spent a 34 hour restart there once in 2007. I decided to spot drivers parking there. A few old timers said "thank ya, but I don't need any help". A few minutes later they'd look toward me in my truck, and wave me over to spot them. It is the nastiest truck stop parking I have ever seen. I saw two trucks get damaged during my restart. One before I started spotting drivers, and one the next morning when I was getting ready to leave. That Loves should be condemned! The really annoying thing is, that the parking area could be widened by 35 feet, without any overhang, and a 3 ft clearance if they wanted to, but no, better to have driving records fouled up with "preventable" accidents and $10,000 in truck and trailer damage every week from the accidents there almost every single day. That truck stop is 6ft. narrower than almost every other 4 column truck parking area. Those missing 3 ft. cause a LOT of damage! I've had that happened at a loves truck stop in Williams, CA and it was abt 21:30 hours (night time). It was packed with 4 spots left. I thought I found a good spot which was towards the middle but when I started backing, my right side of my trailer almost made contact with the truck on my right side to where a trucker came out and asked me if I needed help. I said, yes I do please (it was my 3 week on my own). The trucker who helped me back actually took the time to explain how my setup should of been, how to maneuver my truck around tight areas and how much of turn I need to do when backing in tight spots. He liked that I got out and looked a lot. Then I was finally in my spot without hitting anything not anyone. I thanked him for helping me and giving me pointers on backing in tight spots. It sucked lol but now I have an idea wat to do. We need more people like him who can help a brother in need.

That's crazy-tight. I've been driving 4 years, had my tandems slid almost all the way up and misjudged my trailer swing. Backed into a co-driver of mine here at the company I work for, practically in my own back yard! (Home town) felt so stupid. I typically do the G.O.A.L method, but for some reason I figured I was good enough on the driver side to clear the blind side. Now I have ZERO issues with getting out and looking EVEN IF I know I'm clear, just to get a clean visual of the angles and placement.

But we went owner op pulling for ourself but holy cow we forgot how to back. It terrifies me. My husband is pretty calm about it. All you 'super truckers' who are saying that they could have gotten that truck into that space are lying ! There simply wasn't enough space to get straight or manoeuvre . Any half decent driver knows when a space/situation is too tight ! Should never have tried it ! If they laid out the parking spots in a 'herringbone' pattern,it would make parking a LOT easier here. And yes, I AM a 'class 1' driver (U.K.), with over 35 years experience and I've had an artic (you call 'em 'big rigs' I believe) in places you could only dream of !....... Still, impossible IS impossible.

Nahh, that's totally doable, he never used the full width of the drive to get the trailer lined up. All you really need is the length of the trailer. At 2:24 he was pretty much there except that he was too close to the Volvo to finish.

  • @tstemen1047

After 30 years of driving. The advice I would have is to get about 8 feet or so from the line of trucks where your parking spot is located. Pull just pass where trailer tandems are just to the left of the hood next to your parking spot. Cut the wheel to the right for about 10 feet then to the left. This allows you to see the rear of the trailer. I usually open the door to stand on the step looking at the rear of the trailer as I back up. Mirrors are tricky. Before anyone makes a dumb comment, I own a 379 X Pete with a 330 inch wheelbase. Believe me, the more you practice the easier it gets but you can’t continue to pick the easy spots to park. Backing is essential. Try backing at the Chicago Water Market. That’s a lesson.

Most people make the mistake of staying to close to the driver side problems when you are able to pull far up like this. Stay closer to the passenger side problems (obstacles), slide the back away from the driver side obstacle more, angle from further away if your vision allows it. Tracking gets easier. Takes practice. But then you are not almost in park with no room in front of the truck. Hope this helps. Learned that as a local route driver on tight city routes ironically by watching other drivers. Good job getting out to look.

I think that is how you gain experience. He had to try, fail, try again, fail again and then get help to know that not everything is peaches and cream. I give him credit. He had the choice to look for another spot and might have found one, but what happens when he gets to a shit loading dock and has no choice but to get in? Then he would be fucked. This way he learned something and can use it in the future.

He said he got it in and he also said he didn't hit anything. So therefore if he got it in that means there was enough room it was just tight. i guess in your 24 years all your backings were wide open. if that amount of room was your dock space you going to tell the shipper that he has to load you in the parking lot? You going to refuse to backing? AT least he didn't give up like you would of with 24 years of experience.

Brings me back to when I was truck training at the port of tacoma and had never backed up a trailer before, lol. Granted, the chassis I back up are usually no more than 45' with the axels all the way on the end and the hustler/terminal tractors have a super short wheelbase, so it's a lot easier to back up. Can't wait until I get enough experience under my belt for TOTE training and hopefully get certified

All truck stops are tight, even tighter with the 53 ft. trailers. A lot of the problems come from is these steering wheel holders will not back up as far as they can only making it worse. In Ga last week a prime truck bobtail had taken probably the easiest spot there. When he had set the brakes his truck was at least 10 ft pass the trucks that did have a trailer. Guess he was practicing to pulling a 65 foot trailer . Getting a jump start.

Hello fellow driver. I know this was three years ago, and I’m glad you did this video, because it puts it in great perspective. Your drone footage helped us see what we are up against when we are trying to park. I personally would have stopped at the open spot you were parking at and then done a 45 by driving my tractor and stopping in between the grey and the green truck. I would “Jack & chase” staying in front of the trailer favoring the sight-side. You were way too jacked and you were not pushing your trailer straight back into the spot. Fortunately you did the GOAL “get out and look". Your 90 would have been okay if you had gotten back in front of your trailer in sync with your trailer. Knowing your equipment and being aware of fixed objects that you might hit are very important things to watch for at all times. Thank you for your video.

I go down to Tacoma once in a while, and need to admit this is the tightest truck stop I’ve ever parked at. Took me about 6-7 minutes, got out about 10 times @ about 7pm. I didn’t care that here were 5 trucks waiting to stroll through. I was right behind the building with 2 trucks parked side by side where they shouldn’t have been. One at fault accident in 5+ years. Yes I was backing up, and misjudged my swing on my ass-end when pulling forward. I JUST caught a co-workers tank board and bent the strap. Lost a $1700+ safety bonus. Now, I never hesitate to GOAL (get out and look)

One reason why I love these 45' flatbeds driving for Combined Transport. A little easier maneuvering in the tight parking spots, especially when I happen to be out east. Parking at the loves here in Fort Worth off I35W is a pain. Only spot I could nab was all the way in the corner, so I had to blind side in. Thankfully I have plenty of experience doing blind backing. Been out here 5 years so far, probably gonna retire from trucking as soon as I buy me a house. Doesn't pay enough compared to other blue collar career fields. My uncles a mechanic and he makes good money, better than me. Weekends off, 9 to 5, full benefits, 1 week paid vacation a year. Of course he's also been a mechanic for 35 years, but he said even apprentices start off making good wages.

This is inadequate space for that back. Calling it "tight" is an understatement. This sardine can of a truck stop needs this brought to their attention but us drivers have to do business with them so we don't want to be the ones to inform them of their failure.

? 4 u Bo Shifter or anyone want to anwer. If u slided your tandems all the way back so you don't have a tail swing would you be able to park there? The reason I ask since you don't have a big tail swing it is easier to push in back of the trailer into the spot without having it parallel with other trucks. I'm also considering that you have a small spot in front of you but still. Please answer whoever can.

A quick tip from one driver to another... I like to always keep my tandems at the 41' mark. This minimizes your tail swing when getting in and out of tight spaces. Cause remember that farther up, tighter turn but more swing. Farther back, wider turn and less swing. 41' puts it right at center. Not to mention at 41', even fully loaded at 42,000 lbs nine times outta ten, you won't have to adjust... Nice camera work.
