Backgammon, it's not just something you shout at a brexiter! Anyway, a while back I mentioned in a planning video that i wanted to cover more games like Chess, Go and Backgammon. Just for the sake of completion. Backgammon really is a classic that is legit fun and, well, i think if people want to consider themselves well rounded gamers, it's one worth having a look at if you haven't already

Interesting note - the 'snap' mechanism in Marvel Snap came from the developers playing a bunch of board and card games and deciding to incorporate the doubling die from Backgammon. If you're confident you're going to win a match, you can snap to double the stakes. You then can't snap again, but your opponent can, doubling the stakes again.

I'm in my 40s and I just learned backgammon this year. Now it's great fun. As I'm getting older I'm enjoying these simpler more strategic games.

I love the fact that backgammon allows for social interaction that is often absent in chess while providing opportunities for some cerebral decisions based upon probability & statistics... And it is ancestral to games such as Pachisi, and Ludo...

The doubling cube is not only used when playing for money, but also when playing matches, to some predetermined point goal. A 7 point match is a good length match in my opinion.

Backgammon is fun! I haven’t played in a while but I want to again. I don’t like playing online though and I only have the Lord of the Rings Backgammon set, which is hard to play since the pieces are gold and silver rings and they’re super hard to tell apart! I’m starting to learn Mahjong with actual scoring rules and that would be another good classic to cover! There are lots of variants though.

So a couple of questions - do the checkers that are in your inner area have to leave, go round the board and come back again, or are they already "home"? The checkers on the bar - they have to go back into your opponents inner area- is that counting back using the dice or using the number of the point? e.g. if you throw a 5 is that supposed to go on the 5 point or count back and go on the 2? Thanks

When you’ve got two very skilful players, the game comes down to luck of the dice. I’ve even read it described as a coin toss.

That's why it's played in a match format, to a certain point value. There might even be several of these matches and the winner is the one who wins the most matches. This minimizes the luck factor.

I do like Backgammon but I find it tough to persuade people to play it with me which is also an issue I have with Go. If I ever am in a situation where I'm with someone who would want to play it there is almost certainly more than 2 players present. However one of my gaming group has ordered a Mahjong set and I'm hoping that that is classic game we can get played regularly.

Crawford rule - IF match goes to, lets say, 5 points and score is at next game 4-X you CANT double. example after the score 3-0 we won 1 point and score is 4-0. and our opponent cant double at next game. he must win 1 game and after that crawford rule is OFF and our opponent can double at first move. Jacoby rule - in money (unlimit game) GAMMONS didnt count as 2 points or 2x. WE NEED TO DOUBLE and only WITH cube gammons is ON. small additional rules about dices - if you cant do a move with two dices but with only 1 number on them, you must choose and move your pieces with HIGHER number on both dices. if you can do only 1 move or only 2 moves with both dices you must choose a move which is used 2 dices together.

Your board is not correctly set-up. I'm not sure if there are any alternate set-ups that I' m not familiar with, but in the classic way, the 3 pieces in the outer board are 2 spaces away from the 5 pieces in the home-board , not 1.
