    The 63 around 1:20 is interesting. You would think that 2 plays that are so divergent would produce a larger difference. If i were thinking about this play I would assume that the wrong play is a large mistake

    Because 65 would leave a shot. You aren't playing for contact so your board is irrelevant, you are just playing to get home safely.

    @@dorongronski2328 Mochy is Mochy for a reason. In almost won games it is very important to switch your thinking to look for your horror numbers and find ways to avoid them if you can. All good players do this, doing it at speed in this moment though is one of the more impressive plays of the match if you ask me.

    I like your point about taking marginal passes Justin, but how do you think this matches up with the philosophy that the stronger player should want to reduce volatility and avoid potentially high cubes where his weaker opponent can get lucky. The stronger player should want more games per point, no?

  • @randyohel9074

    @randyohel9074

    No way. The stronger player should want to force his opponent to win the game with the checkers and should want as many total plays as possible to allow the edge to shine through. Also, the stronger player should simply want to play the weaker one for more money in general so higher cubes are great from that perspective.

    As long as you are able to ride the variance wave that is backgammon for money I agree with Randy's assessment. I won't take passes for the sake of taking passes but if I think it's close and my opponent is weaker than I am you should likely lean more towards taking.

    @@randyohel9074 Thanks, that makes sense. Do you not think though that there are some positions where the stronger player can identify volatility and knows the rest of the game is basically just dice (late game prime versus prime, for instance); he might be better passing so he can use his edge more so than in putting the game to chance.

    That can't feel good when your opponent makes a terrible, sick gambler-mind decision like that beaver and it pays off for them.

  • @EliJolleyBridge

    Abe's decision didn't make sense mathematically, but I think there was a psychological aspect to it. He made a stand of sorts. I think he knew instinctively that Mochy doubled early and wanted to put pressure on him. I don't think it worked, but a cool idea and definitely memorable.

    It only feels bad when it works. When they beaver and lose it feels great. In that position Abe wins 36% of the time. That game was one of those times.
