Fifth in a series of (hopefully!) easy to follow tutorials on playing backgammon, designed for the absolute beginning player. Please feel free to comment, and ask any questions, and I'll do my best to reply. Thanks for watching :-)

Just wanted to say thanks for this. You are NOT boring, this was a perfect guide... I had tried several times to get a full handle on the game and every guide just didn't click. Now me and my 8 year old son both completely understand how this works, I can't believe I didn't learn how to play earlier.
This is good - I never realized just what fun backgammon could be - in fact, I had no idea how to play until I watched this - well done!!
Thank you so much for this, we have learnt much more than watching anyone else’s tutorial. Brilliant!
I’m searching for tutorials that I can understand. Too many go so fast I’m lost. Your tutorials are clear and steady, moving along at a pace that I can easily follow. I’m a beginner. I love the game, but I’m not good with winning. My brain is letting me down, which is why I’m latching on to your tutorials. I’m saving all of them to study repeatedly. Sometimes my brain has allot of trouble with left brain activities. My psychiatrist says I need to work that side of my brain in order to have a healthier brain. My mother and grandmother had dementia and this is terrifying . My age is 72. Cognitive difficulties are starting to happen. I think learning to play a good game will help me . Thankfully, the game is intriguing and fun. Again, your work is wonderful. Thank-You, very much.
Thank you, Ensor42, I knew the basics, to play on the phone, but thanks to your videos a few really interesting peculiarities have been revealed. You are a great teacher!
Thank God I’ve found you and this video.
thank you so much i have just liked and subscribed to you i have had a backgammon set for years and never understood how to play until i found your truly amazing videos describing in true complete beginner style you made it so easy to understand and now we may play daily many thanks very happy thanks clive in nottingham .
wonderful teacher, thank you so much.
This is a good tutorial at a proper pace for beginners. Wow, in this part, I am just realizing the person playing the red pieces is sitting at the bottom position. I was thinking the person playing black was positioned there. Great video.

It can go either way. Whichever player has two checkers of their color in the top right corner is the one who sits at the bottom and has the right-hand home board.

Also, the one with the right-hand home board moves counterclockwise, and the one with the left-hand homeboard moves clockwise.
I really appreciate how thorough the instruction is. I’m learning some rules tgat I didn’t know. 👍🏼
Thanks for the feedback, sorry it wasn't to your liking. The "slow and simple" approach though is exactly what I intended, having seen the punchier quickfire type tutorials from other uploaders receiving criticism in comments for not being slow or simple enough.
Lots information good refresher on rules & to play
It's just another measure to help prevent out of turn moves or rolls. When backgammon is played at a high/professional level, turns can be taken very quickly - particularly if the use of clocks is in play. At these speeds, a player can be rolling almost immediately after the opponent picks up their dice. Rolling to different sides helps avoid some collisions!
@Duske3000 Hi. I know I do go on a fair bit both in the videos and in comment replies in other parts about this ;), but it really is important to understand that the dice represent INDIVIDUAL moves. Now you can use both dice for one checker, but, to use your example, the 5 and the 3 are separate moves, even if it's the same checker you are moving, it would be a move of 5 (or 3 ) and THEN a move of 3 (or 5), and NOT a move of 8. This will show why you can't pass certain primes or blocked points.

Very important distinction for beginners, thank you
excellent videos! thank you very much!
These videos are great- thank you so much!
It's interesting that you say that you "can't believe I didn't learn how to play earlier." As in many of the best games, backgammon can be thought of as being "easy to learn, hard to master", and it's the perception of impenetrability that might be stopping some beginners from getting into it. I wish many happy hours of backgammon for both you and your son, and thank you sincerely for your kind comments :)
Correct. Although this rule is being contested by some players. It is generally considered good manners to use this option rarely, and to only use it to "simulate" legal moves. Some players use this option a lot, and then forget what the original position was. This can lead to annoying discussions. If advice to put checkers on TOP of the triangles when you simulate a move to think about it. Once you have decided, move the checkers to the bottom of the triangle, and pick up your dice.
@trashtropper Yes, that's fine. Once you pick up the dice, however, you signify the end of your turn.
I've just started watching your series, which is invaluable. The only slight criticism I would make, is when I look at your videos listed on your channel (on android) because of the way each video is worded it's impossible to see what number the video is. For example "for complete beginners part 3". There is no number to be seen.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to comment. I see what you mean about the titles - a consequence of having long headings - that I will not be changing in order to avoid confusion with searches. I can only recommend using the playlists to see the videos in the right order.
Thank you! :`-)
Excellent series! Thank you for making them. I have small (12 mm) dice and sometimes one will land in the gap between four checkers. The die is flat on the board but is this a valid roll?
Hi,great video! I was wondering, I know each value that shows up on the dice can be used for one checker. However, could I combine both values of the dice for one checker? e.g. 5 and 3 I move 8 steps for one checker only.
Would you have to reroll if the dice end up in the home slot area on either side of the board? Thanks in advance.
@4462834 Kind of you to say. Thank you, sincerely.
You seem to like rolling. xP
If I roll double 3's do I move 4 times 3 spaces? And can I move a single checker 12 spaces during my move?
So during the opening roll each player rolls one of the dice but only the player with the higher number moves and once that move is complete the next player rolls two? For example, the opening role is 6 and 1. The player with six moves and then the player with one rerolls both dice for his move?

Yes, to use your example, the player who rolled the six would make the first move with the 6-1, then the other player would roll both dice for their move.
When I move the pieces could I stack them on top of the the opponent piece? And is there a limit of how many checkers in one point?
@Ensor42

Hi, you wouldn't be able to stack your pieces on top of opponents' pieces, as this would either result in hitting their piece, or the point being blocked if more than one checker was already there. This is better explained in the next few videos in the series. Points can hold any amount of the same player's checkers.
What if ur out and u roll a double. Do u re entry then have 3/4 more doubles left?
its right to move your checkers and then put them back to their position as long the dice still in the board?
You totally sound like sam from game of thrones!
Perhaps I missed something. How do you know which quarter of the board is your finish point?

Re-watch the part 1. As I understood, if I am red, my home board is where these two black checkers are placed at the beginning.
@blasticpuddhas Feel free...!
the first time i played, i rolled 6/6 but i didn't know I could move the way you show =/
what if i got a double 3, does it mean I have to do it thrice? or I can move 3 of my checkers by 3 points? Please explain sir :( I did not catch that idea yet. :(
@Ensor42

Hi, rolling a double simply means that you have twice the number of moves of the value shown on the dice. Whereas usually you would have two moves to play (one for each die), with a double, you would have four. So, if you roll a double 3, then you have four moves of 3 to play.

number of PIPS?
1 die 2 dice 😁

And you are ill mannered and apparently only semi-literate, so it appears that we both have our metaphorical crosses to bear.
why didnt you just make it an entire video, instead of 8 or 9 videos? I appreciate the help, but why so MANY?

You lost me at the difference between rolling with your hands, and the cups.
the biggest prime is not 6 prime the biggest prime is optimus prime
i thought id learn something new, but when i found out this game has so many nit picky bullshit rules that serve no purpose i realised its not my kind of game. "your dice landed on a checker! roll again!"

The series was aimed at precisely the people who DON'T know the "basic things", yet are keen to learn them. That's the whole point.
