Backgammon for complete beginners. Part 9 - Bear off basics.

Ninth in a series of (hopefully!) easy to follow tutorials on playing backgammon, designed for the absolute beginning player. Please feel free to comment, and ask any questions, and I'll do my best to reply. Thanks for watching :-)

This is one of those games that you win when you clean up the board instead of making a huge mess. That’s a cool feature.
Thanks for the videos. Very helpful. My teenage son found my old backgammon set over the Holidays and wanted to play. I had not played in over twenty years and had forgotten some of the rules. Once we watched all the videos we were ready to tackle a day of playing.
Excellent instructional video! Couldnt be better. I first took a look at some other videos before I came across this series and the others were totally unfathomable. Jumbled, garbled, illogical, just totally annoying. This series is clear and concise and the narrator is pleasant. Would gladly have paid for it.
Gratz on 300 Likes, and THANX A MILLION for the "Beginner Series"!!!
Checkers can only ever move forwards. The only way they can in a sense be thought of as moving backwards, is if they are "hit" by the opponent, and have to re-enter back in the opponent's home board.
Hi. Certainly. Although a player can only bear off checkers once all of their pieces are in their home board, it often happens that a player is "hit" during the bear off phase, and so has one or more checkers put on the bar.
These were great and just what I needed. So clear and easy to understand. Thanks so much!
@KripDrip Oh yes, it's quite possible to have begun your bear off, and subsequently be hit by an opponent who has kept checker(s) in your home board, hoping for just such a chance. It is NOT possible, however, to BEGIN bearing off checkers whilst you still have checkers on the bar - you can only bear checkers off once all of them are in your home board.
Yep, even if a player had begun a bear off, if they get hit, they may only continue to bear more checkers off once all of their remaining checkers are back in their home board.
Hi. If there were other moves available with the roll that could be made other than bearing off, then a player could make them, but since the object of the game is to bear off all of one's checkers to win, it would rarely be the optimum choice. Sometimes, though, it is better to move other checkers to make for a more efficient bear off in the long run.
thank you so much
First of all thanks for helping out people like myself to get a small grasp of the game to get us going. I was recently in a position to bare of my pieces and at the same time i had one of my opponents pieces on the bar. I had already bared of about 5 pieces and my opponent re-entered the board and sent two of my pieces to the bar. Was I right in holting the completion of baring of untill my two pieces had made there way back. Thanks.
@peihong33 Cheques can be made payable to... Just kidding :) That's really kind of you to say, thanks for that, much appreciated.
Good info, but you do go on.
No, once a player has borne off at least one checker, they have begun the bear off phase and would only lose a single game regardless of the position of their remaining checkers.
@nelg70 Hi. If I understand your description correctly, then you were not only right, but you had no choice in the matter. Remember that you CANNOT bear off checkers unless ALL of your remaining checkers are in your home board.
Well then, what happens if you have bared off some checkers, but you have one or more checkers on the bar or in your opponents home, and your opponent finishes baring off, is this considered a backgammon?
What happens then? So some of your checkers have bared off, do you have to move everyone home before you continue baring off?
Can you move pieces backwards to block your opponent? Or do you need to always move your pieces forward?

No, there's no way you can move backwards
Quick Q: Can there be more than 5 pieces on a pointer?

is it correct that the player who gets all his checkers into their home board first , inevitably wins the game in MOST circumstances ?

Another example is if you have all your pieces in your home board but have one or two blots, you can still get hit
Holy hell. I made it to the last video. Great information, however it could have been a bit shorter had there not been repeated information. We can always rewatch what we’ve missed, but for this instance, once is enough.
Ya didn't have all the reds in home
