Indeed, an excellent point. I was planning back then to discuss just this sort of thing in a video about the concept of duplication, but never got around to it, so thanks for your kind comment, and for describing a further advantage of the slotting play.

You should also mention that 5 of the rolls that hit the blot on the 5 point are 1-1, 3-1, and 4-2. All these rolls can be played very well on the other side of the board. Great set of videos.

@stevecoot Thanks. You might want to try something like "Backgammon: Winning With The Doubling Cube" by Peter Bell.

Excellent series. Can you recommend a book the explains the intricacies of doubling, when to take and when to pass etc, please?

I always hate when I start with 21 slotting, and then my opponent coming up with a 64. So heartbreaking when that happens.

I thought with the 5-1 you land on the other person's pieces with the 5 and you can't do that before you use the 1. I'm new so maybe my friends play by the wrong rules.

You are not wrong, you are just confused because he didnt show the use of 1 just because if are actually interested in the video you would probably know how the dice and movement with it works, so in conclusion, you and your friends are not playing it wrong.

I would argue that splitting with 5-1 is still only doing one “good thing” as you say. Adding another checker to the 8 point is a neutral move in my opinion. Of course I could be biased because I like running out a back checker to the bar point with 5-1. :-)

It's terrible. I hope you've started playing the 5 1 correctly. The passive 2 1 is better. Computers do roll outs and have proven the best moves. 2 1 slotting is better when far behind in a match and the normal 5 1 adds a builder to the 8 point so it is NOT neutral play. You need to add a builder to the 8 point after making a point inboard so although not the roll you want it is not neutral.

Also, a beginner should not "argue" with an experienced player

And you never slot the 4 1... maybe 19 points behind in a 21 game match?
