Backcountry Bow Hunting for Elk with a Helicopter!

Ойын-сауық

Climb on a helicopter for an elk bow hunting trip! Hunting checkerboard public land takes creativity. Bowhunter Dan Pickar drops into elk camp from above with the help of a helicopter. Armed with a Mathews Triax, Pickar has both elk and deer hunting licenses in hand ready for any opportunity that presents itself. Swirling winds blow an optimum deer stalk, but on the way back to camp Pickar encounters a trophy bull and is quick to capitalize on the opportunity. After a double-lung hit, the bull practically dies at Pickar’s feet on this Beyond the Grid by Eastmans’ webisode.

@@@downstream5887 I can attest to the fact that with the compound bows, arrows, and sights we have now-a-days, the "long ass shots" are not really as far as one would think. And yes, we are proud of perfect long ass shots just as much as the last generation was to shoot further and more accurate than previous generations.

I like the idea of the helicopter to get in and out. I used to fly helicopters and was trying to become a commercial helo pilot with my goal being to use it for hunting and fishing guiding service. Unfortunately flight school went bankrupt and screwed me and several thousand other students nationwide. I lost $60,000 on flight school. Google "Silverstate helicopters" to learn more. Superbowl Monday 2008 my dream was shattered. The economy was tanking then and I wasn't about to pay more money to go to another school to finish. I hope the people that "swindled" the money from flight school are sitting in jail now! That helicopter is a Robinson R44 which I used to fly. How big was the public area you were hunting? Can I ask how much it was to fly everyone and all the gear in and out?Not sure about a double lung hit if the bull lived at least another 20 minutes. I've double lunged several bulls and none have lived longer than a minute and most were down within 100 yards.

These videos are getting too much like Gohunt’s videos with the coffee shop background music. This stuff sounds more like what Beto O’Dork would perform in his rabbit suit for 6 hairy legged girls on shrooms at a VT Ben & Jerry’s than the California techno crap gohunt uses, but bad is bad. Maybe a better way to appeal to millennials, instead of sinking to their level, would be to open their eyes to just how awful their eunuch culture really is by playing some real music in the background. Instead of the Starbucks mix tape why not play some tunes with a mountain/outdoor theme? You boys are from WY, did y’all forget about Chris LeDoux? How about some Bocephus? Hell even John Denver sang about a mountain before he ate his Grape Nuts. Newer isn’t always better. It may do these kids some good to get out of their comfort zone- hell, you’d probably be an emasculated socialist too if all you knew was Google’s elevator music

I'm with you when it comes to good music BUT unfortunately we can't just slap in "Western Skies", call it a video, and post it to youtube. We live in a world of copyright laws so using music for commercial use isn't that simple. Shoot straight Ric!

Just watched one of the episodes of "Beyond the Grid" on Amazon Prime and after seeing Dan take a 60 plus yard shot on a deer in Hawaii seems very irresponsible. The deer ran off with an arrow in his side. One of Dans last statement that "he ran off and bedded down with some other deer, happy as a clam". Im sorry Dan but I seriously doubt that deer is "happy as a clam". I too love to bow hunt and understand deer that "jump the string". As you know, ever yard further gives that deer that much more time to react. I really liked your show until I saw this. I'm sorry but in my opinion your'e setting examples for many less experienced bow hunters that its acceptable to take 60 plus yard shots with a bow. Not a fan anymore and will not support your show any longer.

It was a perfect scenario on that axis buck. He was calm and unaware of my presence. Axis are a whole different creature and because of this, these ninja deer jump the string half the time at all distances. Even at 30 yds. In this case the arrow hit the scapula on a glancing blow and did not penetrate. I tracked him for a 3/4 of a mile without blood and glassed him up with his buddies another 600 yds away. My goal with that video was to show the reality of bowhunting and stuff like this will happen if you do it enough. I will not apologize for showing the reality of bowhunting.
