A great bull . It was so cool to watch my two sons hunting elk together. Very cool to see another big elk harvested and meat put in the freezer. And yes they didn't kill each other!!! I am proud of my sons.

What a great bull! Great story! Counting down the days till opening!!!
I’m 50% on frontals with elk! I must add… you really need to take into consideration how alert the bull is! The first bull was unaware and it worked slick! Made it 50 yard. The second bull however watched me draw so he was on edge! I had to learn the hard way cause as I released the arrow, he was whirling and drove it straight into the head of the shoulder! Got away of course and I felt sick!! Just something to think about in the moment! Even though I know it’s going to happen to people, I would sure hope my experience would help those willing to listen and really think about it!! Glad it ended up working out for y’all!! Great bull! 👌🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼

I took a frontal shot on a whitetail buck. I was leaning against a tree looking down into a ravine. The buck walked right up the ravine and stopped facing me at about eight yards. I was at full draw before he noticed me. I released the arrow. He went about 20 yards and piled up. The broad head went into his heart. Eleven point buck!

Amazing stuff.
That heavy arrow saved the day on this bull. Good penetration even with a high hit. That bull also ducked a foot while the arrow was in flight too, not all on the shooter for sure. Slow arrows is the downside to a short, heavy arrow. Great hunt and great kill though fellas!

I recommend everyone try sliders and original pin sights. I like sliders for targets and fun shooting but when hunting I prefer my 5 pin or maybe a 2 pin slider
@oregonarcher
3 жыл бұрын
@@justinpickar1755 Some of the new sights allow for a 5 pin with slider. Use the bottom pin as your adjustable out to far distance. There is obviously give and take with sight choice preferences, just like anything in life! One of the reasons I prefer the 5 pin is that in Bowhunter class of competition you cant move your sight and allowed only 5 fixed pins. I bet you went home and checked that 40 yard pin to 15 yard sight hold! :) I know I would have been curious to know! Again fantastic bull!!!

I'm a whitetail hunter from Missouri that's been elk hunting a couple times in Wyoming. I switched to the Garmin sight last fall. I was skeptical at first but that thing is awesome. I'm hoping that the western states make it legal to use. To me there will be alot fewer wounded animals due to misjudging yardage

Congrats am glad it worked out for you. You made a tough decision and it worked out.
my advice get fixed pin or hybrid site solves the problem,no problem with front on shots under 20,and yes did whatch whole add,nice elk.just got option 8,expensive but nice.
I don't know what you guys are talking about that was perfect shot placement for a frontal. Most people aim way to low on the frontal. Just draw a line around to where you would shot broadside and you'll see it is alot higher then you think. If you shoot lower you have the brisket bone.
My first elk was a frontal. Same with deer. You got to know where your shooting.

No one ever wants to take a front on shot ! Specialy with a bow . but it works obviously , nice recovery ! My brother and I always waited for a broad side . . . until ya get a massive animal like that . . . put a hole in it . but ethically . front shot gives you alot of vitals .

@danpickar5442

To me, when a bull chuckles it is a vocalization of dominance to bulls and cows. Saying that he's the boss and that the ladies need to come be with him. I never use chuckles when bugling at bulls.

Frontal shots leave sooooo much more blood than broadside shots
Which is. Better for elk 308 or 30 6
@QuitoQueso
3 жыл бұрын
Within 300 yards, the elk isn't going to know the difference between the two. I would go with the -06 personally because it can handle heavier bullets a bit better than the .308, but both have taken scores of elk and will continue to take scores of elk for decades to come. Shoot what you have and make sure you're proficient with it at the ranges you expect to shoot at game.

as an archer since age 8 and now being 59 I can say there is no excuse for not knowing your equipment and your abilities at all ranges and circumstances. I'm not trying to be an ass but the truth is the truth. In todays world guys and gals rely on gadgets and not skill. there is nothing better than instinct shooting . I use no sights and no releases and still split arrows while practicing and no I don't stand in one place . I'm all over walking twisted kneeling blah blah . I use a compound now also with an over draw as I have a finger missing , a coworker dropped a heavy piece of metal on my hand when I wasn't looking and Ta Da, and I can no longer hold an arrow on a rise but I'm still able to shoot a bow ! Practice with out all your gadgets so you can shoot and not ruin the hunt of a lifetime if your equipment fails or you end up in a circumstance where you are caught off guard but have a shot of a lifetime. just sayin
@danpickar5442

I agree with you on knowing your equipment and practicing. If you are an instinctive shooter why do you shoot a compound bow?

3 жыл бұрын
Yep. You're right. Some additional info to provide context. I have two little kids, I got super sick last March and I am still dealing with that. I also fell off a ladder the end of July. Those three things really affected home much time I practiced shooting my bow with new equipment. Not an excuse just context. You're right

He has a 25” draw length, and shoots heavy arrows (he said that in video). Any bow at that draw length with heavy arrows would shoot slow....it’s not the bow!
If you’re going to hunt with a one pin sight, you should practice shooting with your pin set at the “wrong” distances so you know where to aim when hunting, or better yet throw that piece of garbage away and get a 5 pin sight!
@pabloherrera9664
2 жыл бұрын
Totally agree ! Craziest thing to slap on a bow is the 1 pin 📍
We all have to do better knowing our anatomy. That had to have been a carotid artery hit. Jugular vein ain't nuthin'.
You obviously have not taken the time to practice close shots so I guess I will take the time to educate you so you do not rely on luck the next time you get a 15 yd shot. When your arrow leaves the rest it rises to a certain point of elevation. For example my 20 yd pin is accurate at 12 yds but the arrow is still rising. At 16 yds I have to aim 2 inches low. 16 yds is also where my arrow peaks in elevation before it starts to come back down in order for my 20 yd pin to be accurate at 20 yds. This will surprise you, my 30 yd pin is accurate at 7 yds. At 5 yds my 60 yd pin. That is a difference of 6 inches at that range. It’s important! If this is a game of 1/2 inches like you say then you cannot rely on your 20 yd pin for everything sub 20 especially for a frontal shot. Hopefully this helps you and you get some practice in before next season. Great bull and good luck!

When you say trophy hunt, you still sold/gave away the meat right? Or do you mean you killed the animal for no reason at all?

Well stated Scott!
Hybrid or not, it still blows my mind that people use expandables. Probably would have passed through length wise with one of the premium fixed blade heads on the market today. STOP USING EXPANDABLES ON ELK, PEOPLE! shits not even ethical.
@danpickar5442
3 жыл бұрын
Even more important, match your broadhead to the power of your setup. Some folks are going to need a 2 blade fixed and others have more power than they know what to do with! I never have shot a fully mechanical head at an elk but I do know I've watched 11 bull elk die within eyesight with this design of hybrid and have never seen a hybrid fail. I've shot dozens of animals with fully fixed heads including 5 bulls and will never go back it if I have anything to say about it.
