Backcountry Boot Review // Salomon S/Lab MTN Summit

Спорт

Looking for a boot that's not too heavy or too light? A boot that allows you to ski the way you want to without adding too many grams? Then the Salomon S/Lab MTN Summit boot might be for you. As Christof points out the Salomon is a close cousin to the Scarpa F1 in weight and performance. The boot has 70° of rotation and a great progressive flex. Christof has skied this boot on skis ranging from 89mm-112mm. I'd also like to point out the lengths that Christof goes to make sure his boot reviews are high value reviews. He went out with this boot on one foot and a Scarpa F1 on the other. Then went out again with the Salomon on one foot and the Scrapa XT on the other. For more info on this boot go where we go to get the deets skimo.co/salomon-mtn-summit-b...

    Awesome review! I use a 4mm piece of neoprene cut in the same shape as the tongue. Completely changes the fit and adds just a shade more stiffness. Inexpensive and effective.

  • @cnuila

    @cnuila

    Жыл бұрын

    I you’re referring to the Salomon x-alp carbon ski boot, I have only tried it on, but have skied with guys who used it. It really isn’t competitive anymore as there’s so many more boots in the 1000-1150gm weight class that ski much much better, and arguably walk better as well. Fischer Travers CS, Scarpa F1 LT, Scarpa F1 XT, Technica Zero G Peak Carbon, Dynafit Blacklight, Dalbello Quantum EVO are all boots I’d recommend over the x-alp in that space. The MTN summit reviewed here is in another category of performance entirely (and a step up in weight as well)

  • @arnoldkotlyarevsky383

    I have a question for you about boot fit. In an earlier video you pointed to the Dynafit Radical pro as a beef boot. That has a substantially wider forefoot than the salomon (103 vs 99) how do both of these boots fit you? What are your thoughts on heat molding shells? Lastly, for those of us who are new to this, and do not have extra boot liners lying around, what do you suggest in terms of aftermarket liners?

  • @cnuila

    @cnuila

    Жыл бұрын

    Now that you mention the Radical, I feel like they have a similar width and fit, even though the numbers are substantially different. I have a wide forefoot with a little 6th toe issue and a high volume instep and both boots work well for me. The Radical definitely has a closer performance fit but that’s not surprising as it has real buckles vs. boa and power strap. As for heat molding shells, I see that as a last resort and typically you can get much better results from a good moldeable liner like an intuition, and a good boot fitter addressing your individual issues. The moldeable shells just never seem to work great unless you just need to blow them out wide but then they usually will pancake out flat. My go-to liners I’ve used are the Palau tour Lite Pro Evo if you’re looking to upgrade a light 1000 gram-ish boot or like in this case with the MTN Summit I found the Scarpa Pro-flex Evo (the stock intuition liner in the F1) to be a great option in the 1100-1300 gram boot category. Just enough foam to get a good foot mold but not as thick and limiting in range of motion as the Intuition Pro Tour. All these liners and more can be found at skimo.co and their staff are really knowledgeable and responsive if you shoot them an email with questions regarding a specific boot.

    Great review! Thanks for that. One question... do you think it's enough to just open the upper buckle of the boot when changing into walk mode. Or do you need to adjust the velcro on that buckle as well. Like does the buckle open up wide enough?

  • @cnuila

    Hey Christof. Like you, I currently use a pair of radical pros to drive line vision 108’s as my “beef” setup for touring (also my only setup at the moment) with ATK fr14’s. tried on the slab mtn in store and loved the fit (very similar feet to yours sounds like). Do you believe the slab mtn has sufficient support to be driving a ski in that 1680 gram range with 380 gram bindings, or am I better off staying in the beef boot category?

  • @cnuila

    @cnuila

    6 ай бұрын

    Late reply sorry might not be useful, sorry..... I would say it CAN, but you really will have more fun with a ski like that with something beefier. Now if your talking about the lightest powder touring skis like Movement Alp Tracks 106, Voile Hyper V8, even the DPS Pagoda 112 or Armada Locator 112, pairing it with a boot like the MTN Summit might make for a killer lightweight deep snow setup.

    No mods, other than selling it and switching to the F1 XT which fully solved any foot hold issues 😅. Other than that, you might try a shim under the liner to take up a bit of volume, or just reef that boa til it cuts off all circulation lol.

    I have not skied it because it has a much lower volume fit and my foot does not tolerate it. I have two friends who ski it and love it except for the fit, which is painful for both of them. I think it would be a great option for a very low volume foot.

    I own both boots. The traverse is great for fast transitions and tours a little better but the mtn summit skis much much better. I’ll keep the Fischers for the days where uphill is paramount, but everything else will go mtn summit.

  • @cnuila

    I would echo that as well. The travers is a great boot in the ~1000-1100gm category but the MTN Summit is a definite step up in power and performance, which it should be as it’s a step up in weight as well.

    Dynafit tlt 8, 1050g, skis great and it doesn't have 2 things I don't like, the boa and the membrane/ cloth material that replaces the plastic tongue. These 2 things seam like they juat won't hold up to abuse. You know like shaking thru trees, ice. Just don't like these skimo features that would.maybe be great for skiing at the resort but would break, rip and tear in the bc. Just my opinion, the tlt and the technica 0g seam like better option.

  • @cnuila

    @cnuila

    Жыл бұрын

    Both those boots are great in their weight class, but the MTN Summit is in an entirely higher category of power and performance. I skied the TLT 8 Carbonio with an upgraded liner and it still didn’t ski as strong as the MTN summit (but was almost 100 grams lighter so there’s the trade off). This boot stacks up against boots like the Scarpa F1, Fischer Transalp, etc. I’m not saying this is a better option, it just depends what your looking to get out of a touring boot.

    @Christof Nuila I came from dynafit one's wich are like the vulcanized and I can't feel the difference between the tlt8's and them. Like I aid imo, that boa and the fabric in the front is the.main issue for me. It just looks like it's gonna get mangled and torn over time.

  • @cnuila

    @cnuila

    Жыл бұрын

    It was definitely on the radar to maybe try and pick up this year but early reports was that it was noticeably softer flexing/ less powerful than the Scarpa F1 LT that I had been skiing, and I was looking for something a bit stronger. I ended up getting a hold of the F1 XT which satisfied my performance needs at hardly any weight penalty vs the LT, so there was no need to persue the Technica. So take that for what it’s worth. It could be a good option, especially if it fits your foot better than other boots in its weight class. The MTN Summit is definitely in a higher power/performance category.

    @@Talos353 I also was looking at the Zero G Peak, but I couldn't find it anywhere in Japan. Ended up being able to import the F1 XT from Europe much cheaper than the Zero G Peak, which is what put it on my radar. I am very very happy with the F1 XT. Bit heavier at 1150g but it skis extremely well. Stiff enough for me and very progressive and predictable. I can go between my 130 flex Lange XT3 free and the F1 XT depending on the objective of the day without feeling gutless, and that's really saying something. Of course its much softer than that lange as you'd expect being 700g lighter, but I can still ski aggressively in reasonable conditions. In this mid-winter pow I drive a 104-waisted pow ski no problem, but it pairs perfectly with my weenie skis (93 waist, 1350g) for big days (will be the goto setup as spring comes around). Uphilling is a dream.

    @@cnuila so are you saying the MTN Summit sits above the F1 XT and the Zero G Peak Carbon? I´m coming from a 4buckle boot (Hawx XTD 130) and am looking for a more touring/uphill oriented alternative. Have tried the F1 in a shop and it was a perfect fit but I´m hestiating because it´s old technology and the new breed of 1100-1300 gr. boots seem to walk much better. However fit and flex of the F1 felt nice in the shop. Also tried the MTN Summit which felt good to, but seemed to fit my foot just less well around ankle an heel.
