Cole Wallace I twist & ripped until there was a good 2-3 inch fluff the I'd backcomb that then repeat until I reached the end. But it also works just going back over with backcomb

so im logged into my boyfriends account right now we are researching getting his dreads going. we were going to go somewhere but i have a lot of hair experience - i was thinking backcombing closer to the roots and then twist and ripping the rest? but this would probably cause those unsightly scalp gaps yeah? any advice is much appreciated \m/

Cole Wallace yeah don't go anywhere! It'll turn out great. I'd advise to take the time section them neatly. Section a chunk at a time then see how they lay down. If they look good dread em up!! Sectioning is a little funny, it's like a chess game, you want to make sure each move will add its way to the next one safely. & as for seeing the scalp, it doesn't matter if it happens bc it will prob go away in a week or so

same here, also used a combo of both and I think (and people told me) that they looked pretty good right from the beginning and not one of the extremes being silly poofy or super thin braids.

you are amazing. your advice is soothing to a freak-out prone mind like mine. i am a micro manager and have started this journey to learn and grow personally. i started with T&R and i palm rolled during month 1 and 2. by month 3 the lumps and bumps starting to outnumber the smooth babies and it was at this point i noticed that rolling actually created to bumps to loc up faster, sure, but faster in their bump, seeming like they are less likely to be sucked in and smooth out. the unrolled ones are loose bumps that seem to have a greater chance of being sucked in over time. this is when i decided to literally stop looking in the mirror. every so often one will pop in my view and it looks soo different each time, i am finally starting to enjoy this and love my carefree hair. i have watched a lot of ur vids and read ur comments or ur site, and without fail, if i have a qtn u have the answer. anyways, this is a long winded way to say cheers mate for taking this time and being all chill. i do have some qtns though. there are a zillion types of beanies and what not, do u recommend a certain site to buy one? i know wool yeah? but then i heard wool can leave little bits of fluff in ur dreads? and im interested in adding beads etc, are natural best? or skip it altogether? id like to accessorise, but not at the expense of my hair/scalp health. also, i have loose ends so was thinking about colouring just them, will it leave a residue that will slow down the process? is there something i really should avoid in the product? any answers would be great. thanks again for being a great sport in everyones journey. cheers bud

Good explanation on both twist & rip and back combing. In my experience the most important in starting dreadlocks with more hold, form and consistency is the crochet. I use both T & R and Back combing combined with crochet after it and it gives the newly started dreads more form. Sure there are some people that worry about crochet damaging dreadlocks, but if you use it correctly and gently towards your dreads it's supposed to be alright.

ok, glad I found this vid. The 1st time I had dreads I back combed and then did freeform from there and this time I started using twist and rip and many of them look somewhat braided, especially the thinner ones. As long as they will still have the same texture once they mature then it seems like I don't have anything to worry about!!! Thanks bro. God bless.

my dreads were backcombed with extremly light crochet, they are now 11 months and have about the same amount of fuzz as yours! I did dye them purple so the bleached may have sped up the process. I wash them once a week and I condition them a couple days before i was them. I love your videos and they helped me become aware of the pain they can be when theyre babies lol. I had dreads about three years ago, for only about four months unfortunately. I had a horrible time with keeping my roots separated and had hairs growing from other dreads into a separate dreads , and was just overall very messy. I have missed them ever since and have finally had the time to put them back in a few days ago! My first time I did twist and rip, and this time around I did backcombing. I am excited to see the difference between the two methods. I also used crochet hooking both times just to help tidy up and interlock them a bit better after finished as well. I have watched you ever since my first journey and glad to be back! Thanks for all your helpful videos! I do have one suggestion - of course every new dread head has problems with frizz - I went through your videos and it looks like you just touch on frizz in your Q and As. I was wondering if you could dedicate a video to frizzy dreads and how to healthily help them interlock and tidy them up without too much damage . I know palm rolling it good, but I was wondering if there was a way to keep them a bit more separated and tidy like with gel or a spray when palm rolling? Any advice for new messy dreads would be great! :)

I did my first set at TnR. I thought they took a little long to mature - maybe I made them too small. They also had a bit of a braided texture. I just started my second set as backcomb with crochet. So far, I'm liking this method more. The dreads are a more sturdy so far. They stick out a little more, but the base feels stronger! Now, my hair is a fair amount shorter the second time around so I wonder if that had adds any "weight" to the maturing process. Either way, I'm happy I started them again. LOVE having locks

Great video! I agree, starting method really doesn't matter. Looking at the bigger picture, the hair that grows out dreaded will look the same regardless of starting method. Once you get several years in, the starting length is only left on the tips of the locks. And if you trim them enough you'll eventually cut off all the starting length. :)

I did mine a month ago with a combination of Twist & Rip / Backcomb. Backcomb for the roots to have a solid base and t&r to keep as much length in the beginning as possible (hair is about chin/shoulder length). Overall it worked out well for me, although there are some dreads with kinda loose spots. What's bothering me the most right now is that alot of them turned out a little bit too thin. Hope they get a bit thicker over the next months.

I'm feeling so helpless right now, I've been wanting dread forever and tried so many times with salons that have screwed me over. I recently have tried again, seem to have a good part and backcomb though I have very soft fine hair with a tight curl pattern. I read with soft fine hair you should wrap up your hair at night as to protect it from coming undone. the first two weeks I was sleeping with my head unwrapped and felt the top of my head had come undone from this. so I purchased a dread sock and retwisted my hair with dolly locks salt spray at 2 weeks. everything feels to be going great and locking up on the sides and the back of my head though the top of my hair has left me frustrated. I know if I wait things will work itself out though there are 2 dreads or so I have MAJOR concerns about. in these two spots it seems that the spots at which I retwisted and possibly pinned at have turn into a tight solid section of hair that I feel might be a bad sign. I feel like it would hinder the movement of hair in that dread and I don't foresee it becoming more loose with time. I'm at the one month mark now. I went for slightly bigger than pencil size dreads and I don't know what to do about these extremely tight sections in a couple of my dreads. please for all that is holy give me some advice or encouragement. should I take those dreads out and re-backcomb or leave them be? 😫😥😖😞

So my dreads turned one year on July 1st 2017. I did back combing and rip and twist with a little bit of crocheting. ( I'm a mess, lol). My hair was to the back pockets of my jeans when I started and are now around my bra strap in the back. My question: my dreads are super lumpy and bumpy!!!!!! And no matter how much I roll them it doesn't seem to matter. Also, after I wash them they get worse. I assume it's them shrinking and I'm OK with them shrinking but will the lumps and bumps stop or at least smooth out at least a bit? I wish I could show a picture because it's really bad! And I don't have anyone that can help me roll them so when my arms get tired I'm done and it doesn't take long due to the length of my dreads. I'm waiting for mine to look like....well somewhat like yours. Or will it just take more time or will they always be this lumpy?

Hello there! I have an issue with how my dreads were made and I'm not quite sure what to do, maybe you can help? My dreads were started neither T&R nor Backcomb, but rather by attaching extensions to my hair by weaving my hair through the pre-made extension. The problem is that some of them were started way way too thin on the root. I feel like combining them doesn't really work now because the dreads will always end up being thinner than the actual dread. Any thoughts on what my options are...?

Extensions are the problem, I had extensions too and dreads became thinner at the root, but I cut off those extensions on time so i have thinner dreads but at least they grow normally now. If your dreads are far from breakage, I suggest you to do the same ;)

Taylor Ensley Depends on the method and the person who's dreading your hair, but it will take hours. I can't say exactly how many, I haven't dreaded mine yet, but I'm doing my research.

Taylor Ensley I did my friends hair, she had very long, very straight and silky hair. It took about 3 days to do her whole head. But she wanted tiny ones do that may have played a part in the timing

I twist and ripped most of my head. I back combed 2 dreads and I honestly feel that if I had done my whole head that way, they wouldn't have done well. They were really.... flimsy? Thats the best way I can describe it. Maybe I just didn't do it right, but they were my least favorite dreads!

Twist and rip didn't work for my hair. I have very thick, asian-like hair. I had more success with the backcombing method, but like many before me, I also suffered from the SAG. Ie. the dreaded part started to sag torwards the tips making the tips really fat while the roots started growing out . . so another fail. Only method that really worked for me was the crochet hook. So. I recommend the crochet hook universally to everyone, twist and rip if you have thin hair and backcombing only if you're lazy. Learning the technique for crochet allows you to maintain the hair down the line, too.
