    Hi Neil! I wanted to first thank you for all of the content you’ve put out, I’ve both enjoyed and learned from your experience and I’m undertaking my IAM currently. My question is that we’re aiming for the same standards of riding and both seem happy riding to the speed limits but we have a different approach to bikes - I tend to ride smaller capacity bikes and I wondered if you could walk me through any of the benefits of having the larger capacity bikes as someone who isn’t seeking the use the upper end of the performance on offer.

  • @Back2TheBike

    @Back2TheBike

    Hi Coben. Always start with your requirement. What do you want the bike to do for you? Range, comfort, performance, economy? For me, I now run the Monster and in every respect it is over specced for my needs but that means I can rely on it, I'll never be disappointed in its performance and it gives me room to grow my riding. Early on I considered a Vstrom 650 which would have ticked all the sensible boxes but left me wanting something more perfectly engineered. The R I now ride is matchless IMHO and makes me smile every time I look at it.

    @@cobenblack1876 Rum truffle please Coben :-) I hope Neil won't mind me wading in here but personally I think that bigger bikes are safer - a physically big bike probably weighs more than you do so together you make a pyramid shaped triangle with more weight lower down and keeping the centre of gravity low - a twenty stone rider on a moped would be an upside down triangle with a very high centre of gravity which is not an ideal situation for handling or braking - if finances allow, a bigger engine does less work which gives better economy and also expands your options for getting yourself out of trouble - lower performance bikes can sometimes limit your options to braking in an emergency situation but a larger, more powerful bike gives you the option of accelerating out of danger too - a bigger bike has more stability when it really matters, when you're going round corners and when you're under firm braking, you've just got a lot more vehicle under you - like Neil said, it all depends what your using it for and what the piggy bank and the long haired General allows - stay safe out there :-)

    My first bike after i passed my test was a Monster 800. Great bike, sadly stolen and recovered but I traded it in soon after. The only things that annoyed me about the bike was getting it into neutral. It never improved and was very frustrating. The other was a lack of a fuel gauge. @@Back2TheBike The miles never improved the neutral in my bike!! The best way to get a feel for the fuel consumption is to obviously count the miles between fill ups. After you have done that a few times it will help. I would definitely get a tracker as well, that was the reason I got the bike back. My bike was stolen when I was doing a bit of touring in Wales. I usually put the disc locks on every time I stop, but I decided on one occasion to nip into a hotel reception to book in and then move my bike so I could see it from my hotel room. Came out 5 mins later and it was gone. The thieves had been following me. I used Trakking - it's about £200 and £99 a year subscription. It works!
