Back to the Future: Still The Greatest Time Travel Story of All Time

The year was 1985 when Super Mario Bros. took the Nintendo Entertainment System by storm; Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes debuted in newspapers, and two unlikely friends named Marty McFly and Emmett Lathrop Brown piloted cinema's most iconic time machine to a year when Panama hats and kitten heels were all the rage, 1955.
Fiercely protected at a level akin to Ghostbusters and Star Wars by millennials worldwide, Robert Zemeckis's Back to the Future sits enthroned at Nostalgia Mountain's top. The original film has spawned two sequels, a cartoon series, video game adaptations, a Broadway musical, and more. But how does it hold up by today's standards?

    In my opinion, Back To The Future is the most consistent movie trilogy, at least in terms of quality, which is ironic because it breaks the key rule of a trilogy of essentially doing the same story 3 times, yet it works given the motif of history repeating itself. Look at all of the elements that appeared in all 3 films: Marty saying "This is heavy" and Doc Brown saying "Great Scott," Marty hitting his head and waking up with a version of his mother taking care of him, Marty walking into a diner and encountering a Tannen as well as a Strickland, a chase scene in the town square and Marty almost crashing into a vehicle, a Tannen crashing into manure, a scene where a character wears a bullet proof vest, pictures/documents changing, Marty being called "chicken," and of course the entire clock tower scene all appear in each film.

    Zemeckis has made some of the most entertaining movies over the last forty+ years, even Used Cars was funny for those that haven't seen it before. I was around fifteen when this movie released, it was a sleeper hit and Michael J. Fox was really only known for his Family Ties role, that all changed after this movie. As far as you remembering seeing this movie as mentioned around the 5:52 mark, yeah, it's entirely possible. I saw Jaws at the theater in '75 and still remember sitting in the theater and being scared shtless, lol. There is a fan theory that Doc was actually suicidal and he was gonna take Marty with him. Long story short, prior to the time machine Doc Brown had been down on his luck as his house had burned down, many of his previous inventions weren't successful, and he was living in a garage (these and other subtle details were shown in the opening). So, the Time Machine was Doc's last attempt to create something successful, but he was worried it wouldn't, so he figured he'd kill himself should it fail, but he didn't want to die alone which is why he and Marry stood infront of the thing when they tested it in the mall parking lot. If it worked, Doc, Marty, and Einstein would have lived, if it didn't, then the car would have crashed into them at 88 miles per hour and killed them. Its a very depressing yet possible fan theory.

    here is another one to melt your brain. In back to the future 2 marty died on the roof of the casino and when he was getting chased by Biff through the tunnel in1955. The Doc kept going back in time off screen until he could be there to save the day at the last minute

  • @AvatarYoda

    @AvatarYoda

    3 ай бұрын

    In order for this theory to be true, we have to throw out everything about Doc's character and about the series' tone. He's an optimist, and he never gives up. He's worked for 30 years on this, showing he's persistent and will keep going back any setback, even bankruptcy. He wants to go to the future to see the progress of mankind. He believes in the best things. He is not in despair; such an optimistic person is not suicidal. If he fails, he finds a way to keep going. He has made several inventions that work before we see the DeLorean travel: the Rube Goldberg machine at the start (it starts up, showing that it has the ability to power down. Sure, the toast is burned and the dog food dish is overrun, but it's not the machine's fault the human hasn't maintained it all week), the giant amplifier which Marty has obviously used safely before, and the remote control that guides a stick-shift car (he deserves a grant for that). So, the time machine isn't his first successful invention. Doc would never, ever, ever harm Marty. When the Libyans show up, Doc immediately thinks of saving Marty: "Run for it, Marty! I'll draw their fire!" And later, against Buford, he shouts "Forget about me, Marty and save yourself!" It doesn't match the above theory. Wanting to kill Marty makes him an attempted murderer (and of a minor, as Marty is 17), meaning he doesn't care about Marty at all and could not be anything resembling a friend, thus casting a horrible pallor over their interactions over the entire series. It's also not possible given Doc's character. He is a kind, gentle soul. This isn't "I don't want to die alone." This theory suggests, "If I die, I'm taking you with me," which doesn't fit Doc. Doc knew his machine would work, and simply wanted the best camera angle for Marty to record it. Nothing more. Back to the Future is an optimistic, light-hearted, life-affirming comedy, and this dark theory tonally has no place in it. Thanks for reading.

  • @AvatarYoda

    @AvatarYoda

    3 ай бұрын

    @@robvegas9354 I've heard that theory too, and don't think it can be right for a few reasons. First, Doc would quickly run into his other self in the other DeLorean, which he wouldn't risk. The creators even confirmed you can't keep going back in time like that because you'd run into your other self; you can only go back to try to change something once. Doc wouldn't be able to hide from his other self/selves or Marty if he keeps doing this. The timelines would quickly get crowded with Docs and DeLoreans. It would decrease the movie's stakes if characters could just keep redoing things until they got it right; having only one chance is more suspenseful. Second, suggesting Marty keeps dying is really selling Marty short, as we see he is quite capable of accomplishing his "missions" throughout the trilogy, including besting Biff in the skateboard chase, Griff in the hoverboard chase, and Buford in the duel. There's no reason for him to suddenly fail constantly here. They are not impossible accomplishments. Thirdly, there's really no reason why Marty would "need" to die and why he wouldn't survive these events. He goes up to the roof because that's where the dropoff/pickup is: Biff's line "How'd you get past my security downstairs?" tells us Marty got in through the roof and intends to leave that way. He's upset because Doc isn't there when he expected him (maybe because Doc was nearly spotted and had to take off to hide before extracting Marty) and just needs to stall for time: he constantly looks down when talking to Biff until he finally sees Doc and jumps off the roof onto the car's waiting roof, looking awesome when he floats back up. As for the tunnel, there's also no reason for him to die. Doc waits on the other side of the tunnel, but when he sees Biff's car turn around outside it, knows Marty isn't getting out that way, so hightails it back to get his friend. The novelization says as much. Doc gets back in the nick of time, as is a running them in this series, and saves Marty. No need for death. Lastly, if Marty really did die multiple times, the audience and Marty would find out about it, as we and Doc know about the times Doc died before Marty saved him (having only one chance to change the timeline). If Marty told Doc about his deaths, Doc would definitely tell Marty about his, and he never does. Whoa, that was a lot of writing. Thanks for reading if you made it this far. I love talking about these movies!

    Love this movie! It is perfect. The characters are wonderful and fun to watch, have great relationships and dynamics with each other, and everyone is giving a great performance. You're right about Lorraine: Lea Thompson deserves a lot of credit for handling the whole incest thing in a tasteful way and making it funny when it could have gotten really uncomfortable. Every piece is exactly where it needs to be in the screenplay; nothing could be omitted. It is economical in ways few movies are. All the deleted scenes, while interesting to see, were deleted for good reason. The dialogue is so sharp, and many lines serve multiple functions ("They wanted me to build them a bomb, so I took their plutonium and in turn gave them a shiny bomb casing full of used pinball machine parts!" is the best line in the movie. It's funny, character-building, payoff, and setup all at once, while seeming silly and almost inconsequential. I want to write a line that good.) It's a rare time when every piece: writing, acting, effects, cinematography, themes, editing, etc, all come together and produce an excellent work that resonates on many levels. Plus, it's really funny; there are parts I laugh at each time. The sequels are great too, though I think Part III's writing is better that II, and II has almost no heart to it. I like that the trilogy primarily (especially for I and III) uses time travel as a tool to tell the story of the people. That's more interesting to me than a story about time travel, though I do appreciate II for being a little different in that it's the "time travel shenanigans" movie. But, I watch the movies for the emotions and heart, and that's where II falls a little short, and where the first and third excel. Yet, if you want all three in a row (which you should at least once if your life if you're a fan), that problem vanishes, as they play out like one movie, and Part II comes off better then. Part III has the best cinematography, I think. Really, this is a very thematically-consistent trilogy and so tightly-written. I love the characters, humor, themes, and tone. I've watched them for over thirty years and don't think I'll ever get tired of them. There are so many details to notice after dozens of viewings; they are some of the most rewatchable movies ever. The themes of friendship, family, and courage (not having too little, like George, or too much, like Marty) are universal and deep. It is so character-driven and heartfelt. These films are good for your soul. I'm glad there are only three; the story came to its natural conclusion with the characters, and it is so important to me when writers know when to start and end the story. Artistic integrity won out over profits. Well done, Zemeckis and Gale! No reason for a remake. Remakes should be for films that didn't execute their premises well. Back to the Future has already achieved perfection.

    I was 17 in the summer of 1985 when I saw Back To The Future in the theater, and what most people don’t realize is the ending was a joke, a silly gag to end the movie. At the time Back To The Future came out, there were NO intended sequels to this movie. This was during a time in cinema when most movies were originally ideas and not remakes or sequels. The “To Be Continued . . .” was added to the end of the movie when it was sold on commercial VHS tapes, and not in the theatrical release. Of course, Hollywood is greedy and they couldn’t resist making sequels that would continue to cash in on the success of the first film, and so Back To The Future Part II came out almost 4 and a half years later, followed by Part III six months after that. One giant plot hole at the beginning of the second film occurred when Doc Brown took Marty and Jennifer in the DeLorean to see themselves in the future, they wouldn’t BE there because they would have been gone for 30 years, so history would have been altered. And, as with most sequels, those films have the same plot points and the same dialogue repeated again and again. While I agree Back To The Future was a film that launched Bob Zemeckis’s career after a few bad movies, the sequels are pale in comparison to the original film.

    yea as soon as the video started i was annoyed, is this a permanent thing? cause those voices are soooo generic with no emotion or even pauses, like it's one big sentence... almost can't watch the whole thing

    One great trilogy that was consistently good with not a dud in the bunch. Varying levels of quality, but all were great.

    Millennials? Fuck that. They have no claim on this. They can protect their Twilights and Dawson's Creeks or whatever shit was popular in the late 90s and early 2000s. BTTF belongs to Gen X

    Greatest time travel story? I like Back to the Future, but I much prefer the Doctor Who TV shows and most of the Terminator franchise.

    Normally I agree with much of this channel, but as time travel films go back to the future is as bad as it gets, it's down there with endgame. 12 Monkeys is the best time travel film

    Are you kidding me? It's not millennials who "firecely protect" movies like Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, and Star Wars. It's Gen-Xers! You know, the kids who had already seen these movies in the theater during the 70s and 80s before millennial kids saw them on TV in the 90s! Get your facts straight! SMFH
