Some little bits you may have missed: The mall at the start is named the Twin Pines Mall, but then Marty runs over one of the pine trees in the past, so when he gets back there at the end, it's now the Lone Pine Mall. The band member, Marvin Berry calls his cousin, Chuck. Chuck Berry is the artist who wrote Johnny B. Goode. Not a spoiler: When they made this movie, they never intended to make sequels. By the time the second movie was made the actress who played Jennifer was dealing with some real life issues, so they had to recast the part. Since the second movie picks up right where this one ends, they had to re-film the ending scene with the new actress (Elizabeth Shue).

She missed more than just some "little bits"... This script is so tightly written, and the visuals so important, that if you even so much as cough or blink you could miss some vital piece of the plot (not to mention all the Easter eggs). She looked away and talked so much over the dialogue that the best part of this reaction was her asking questions later in the movie that were answered/foreshadowed in the beginning. Maybe she'll watch it a few more times on her own (BEFORE she watches the sequels!) and it'll all make more sense for her.

I was born in1982 and I grew up with this movie. My dad was a guitarist and loved this movie as well. I loved your absolute JOY you showed this movie, it's a classic ❤❤

Fun Fact: Marty Mc Fly plays an Edward Van Halen tape to his dad. 1955, the year Marty travels to, is also the same Year Eddie Van Halen, one of the greatest guitar players in the world, was born.

Similar thing with the photo. It was 1985.. it was a very different time compared to now. Ok.. less likely, for sure.. but not impossible. (Besides, they needed it for the plot!)

The band judge who said they were too loud is actually Huey Lewis from Huey Lewis and The News, who did the songs Power of Love and Back in Time, heard in this movie. They also did the song Hip to be Square, which can be heard in other movies such as American Psycho (which you really must do a reaction of ;) =) About your thought on the future, watch the 2nd movie ;)

11:36 Remember what Marty's sister, Linda said in that introductory scene, in the beginning of the movie? That she didn't know what Dad was doing, in the middle of the street? And then Lorraine said, "What was it, George? Bird watching?" Did you wonder why George was so defensive about it?

My favourite part is around the "Johnny B. Goode" song that is played, where in reality it is honestly unknown as to who wrote it, while the Marvin character calls his cousin "Chuck Berry" who then became famous in part due to making that same song a hit on the rock and roll charts!

The Back to the Future movies have been some of my favorites ever since I saw them as a kid. Here's some fun trivia about the first one. - The filmmakers came up with the idea for the story when one of them (Bob Gale) found his dad's old high school yearbook and wondered if he and his dad would have been friends if they had been teenagers at the same time. - The filmmakers had trouble finding a studio that would accept the movie, as Disney felt that the story was "too naughty", while the rest of the studios felt that it "wasn't naughty enough". - Michael J. Fox, who played Marty, was starring in a TV show called "Family Ties" at the time "Back to the Future" was being made, so they tried to make the movie with a different actor, Eric Stoltz. After they had filmed most of the movie, they realized Stoltz didn't work as Marty, so they made an arrangement with Michael J. Fox to play Marty while still starring in "Family Ties". That meant that Fox only got about 2-4 hours of sleep a night because he was working on "Family Ties" during the day, and on "Back to the Future" at night, with the outdoor daylight scenes filmed on weekends. - The singer who sang the songs "Power of Love" (played while Marty was traveling from Doc's place to his school) and "Back in Time" (played when Marty wakes up in the "new" 1985 he created) was Huey Lewis. He actually played the part of the music judge who told Marty his music was "too darn loud". Lewis came up with the "too darn loud" reason for rejecting the band because it was the dumbest reason he could think of. - When the movie was first shown in Australia, the government there was worried that Marty holding onto the backs of cars while riding a skateboard would give kids there the wrong idea, so they made the filmmakers do a public service announcement warning not to hold onto the backs of cars while riding skateboards before they would allow the movie to be shown in their country. - The other guitar player in Marty's band was actually the guy who taught Michael J. Fox to play the guitar for his part in this movie. - The filmmakers chose the DeLorean car as the time machine because it had the "gull wing" doors that opened upward, which made it resemble a space ship from science fiction. - Ronald Reagan, who was the US President when the film was made, loved the joking reference to him being president in 1985 and even made a reference to the movie in one of his speeches. - In the scene where Marty takes the liquor bottle from his mom and tries it himself, his spitting it out was unscripted. What really happened was this: there was only supposed to be water in the prop bottle, but the crew pranked Michael J. Fox by putting real liquor in it!

30:26 Yeah, Doc knew that things were going to change for Marty, but he also figured it would be for the best due to George finding his inner courage to stand up for himself. Also, that expression Doc makes after Marty asks what's wrong kills me every time.

I always thought Doc was probably wondering "If his parents are going to have a different life, maybe they'll have different kids (not same schedule so , not sames "moments of fun" so......) but the photo proves the kids are the same (at least biologically) wtf?" Think about it, if the day of conception of your kids were different (and so the parents "eggs") , would they be the same kids ? The differences between kids who are not twins and have the same two biological parents are giving you the answer

@@7gbeng this is exactly what I always wondered about these movies 😂 the new Lorraine and George would be hella busy which includes different dates of conception of place and different sperms that fought off. By that logic at least one of these original three kids shouldn’t be born or might actually have an extra sibling 😂 then again I shouldn’t look so deep into it or I’ll fry my brain.

I think more likely it was just Doc realizing that it was too late to do anything about it since that lightning strike was going to happen soon and there was no turning back. But it does let us the audience know that there "might" be some changes when Marty gets back to 1985.

26:18 And behold, the knight in shining armor is born. It really is a stroke of genius what they did with the dynamic between George and Lorraine. Initially, they fell in love because George was hit by the car being driven by Lorraine's father who brought him in the house, and he became the little lost puppy her heart went out to, so the two of them went to the Enchantment under the Sea Dance together and kissed on the dance floor, and that was the moment where they fell in love. But the second time through, Lorraine found herself under assault and hopelessly outmuscled by Biff until George came to her rescue. George, completely unaware that he had it _in_ him until this moment, laid Biff out in one punch. Then George and Lorraine went to the dance _together,_ had their first kiss on the dance floor and fell in love. It was a different _kind_ of love though, because now, George knew he had it in him to stand up to bullies and this changed the _whole rest of his life._

In the original timeline George was the rescued one, Lorraine the rescuer. In the new timeline, George is the rescuer, Lorraine the rescued. In the original timeline, they married for the wrong reasons. But now, it's the right one. The first actor cast as Marty Mcfly thinks the ending should be a tragedy because he thinks Marty basically killed his entire family and went back to a different one. Which is false, his family is still there, they just changed so they can reach their true potentials. Actually Marty's parents didn't change in the future (or 1985), they changed that night of the Enchantment Under The Sea dance. George became an alpha male that night. Lorraine matured and learned what true love is. This movie has great character development. Characters started with flaws and ended up better people. At the end you could see Marty holding an envelope with his demo tape inside, to be sent to record companies. Meaning he believes in himself now, that he changed too.

I have read somewhere a few years back that some dude claiming to be a cameraman on the set of Back to the Future said that there was a lot of lost archive footage that disappeared completely and in the scene toward the end where Biff brings George his books and gives Marty his keys to his new truck there was supposed to be a scene afterwards where George gets up with his new box of books to put them away in the living room closet and Supposedly as George was putting the Box on the Shelf of his closet he slid the box over to the side to make room when something from the top of the Shelf like a old newspaper fell and when George picked it up it turned out to be a 1955 Hill Valley High School newspaper dated like a week later after Marty went back home to 1985 with a black and white photo of Marty onstage front cover with the hashtag "Who is this kid and where did he go???" And then supposedly that's when George is supposed to realize Marty from high school is his son, and after realizing this to be sure he walks over to the front door where he's looking at Marty through the screen door while Marty is unlocking the garage door where George just looks back on at the high school newspaper and smiles and then that's when it goes right to the scene of Marty opening up the garage door and checking out his new Toyota. Don't know how true this is but there it is lol

The novelization of the movie was written with a slightly earlier draft of the script as a template, and there are some scenes in it that didn't make it into the final movie (like a detention scene with Marty at the beginning which was apparently filmed with Eric Stoltz, but not with Michael J. Fox), but there's no mention of George finding an old newspaper at the end. So while it's possible that Bob & Bob thought of such an ending at one time, I'm sure it wasn't in the final drafts and was never filmed.

Clearly one of the most beloved trilogy ever made.

This remains just about a perfect damn movie. Adventure, humor, romance, suspense. This is almost always one of my favorite "first time watching" experiences for reactors

The entire trilogy is a MASTERPIECE, look part II and III soon, the three parts are like a large continuous movie.

Magy! You must watch the other two soon as you can. Part of their charm is all the callbacks and easter eggs between the movies. Also, it tells one, continuous story. This trilogy is seriously one of the best out there in terms of story, writing, acting, comedy, consistency, and heart. Enjoy the ride!

As a curiosity, here in Spain in the spanish translation Lorraine calls her son Levis Strauss because the Calvin Klein brand was not known here in 1985. Greetings

This movie is like the perfect movie, and has everything: Science fiction, drama, romance, action, comedy, incest...EVERYTHING! 😅It also has a GREAT life lesson 👍 YES you HAVE to watch the Part 2 and Part 3!

I saw it in the theater as well. After the summer it was still playing, and if you were born on the November 5th, you got in free. Also, years ago, I went to an event called RetroCon in Philly, and next door to the convention center was a movie theater and after the event they had an 8pm showing of Back to the Future. It was people from the event who brought their kids, and it was like being transported back to when the movie first came out, due to the audience reactions.

@@dIggl3r Same. I don't know what it was, but after getting the trilogy DVD, I watched it again and like it a lot more. Same with Indiana Jones Last Crusade. Something about Spielberg and the third part of a trilogy.

I’m glad you enjoyed this movie. This is funny for me because I watched it as a kid about 30 years ago and reliving this is like going back to the past!

One of my favorite trilogies. Parts II & III are a must. For those us us old enough to have seen it in the theater there are Easter eggs. References current to us at that time. Bits that reactors don't get to enjoy a quarter century later, so imagine, as good as reactors think it is, it's actually a little bit better & Even w/out seeing the cultural bits (or perhaps because of it,) everybody still loves it. & I'm so glad that you like it too. True! I was born in 2003. I had to ask SO many questions about references I didn't get the first time I saw this movie. Like when Doc was listing off names, "Ronald Regan" and all of those. I had no idea why he was mentioning those people. I was even still young enough the first time I saw this (I think I was 8 or 9) that I didn't understand what the big deal was with Marty saying he had 2 TV sets. My dad explained some of them to me. And of course, in subsequent watches as I got older, I understood it better.

@@BubblyRainbows Even little things, like rolling the TV over to watch TV while eating dinner was a treat. We only got that on Sundays. & Marty's 'Life Preserver' we didn't have down jackets yet & that's exactly what some of our Life Jackets looked like. Everybody would think he's walking around on land with a Life Jacket on. & "Another one of these boys jumped in front of the car again." is a very strange line.... Another one? Again? Either a lot of the boys in town are Peeping Toms like dad. (Possible) or... The school tramp leaves her curtains open intentionally & lets the boys know it. (Probable) Marty's Dad is still a Peeping Tom but he's also, just a horny teenaged boy joining in with some of the other teenaged boys from school.

Your reaction was outstanding. Thank you forever for this reaction to a legendary movie that will not-ever get old, no matter the year it is watched. It lives on and still holds greatness for many reasons to this day.

Fun fact: when the studio execs read the script and they got to the part where Marty is starting to make out with his mom, they said to director Zemeckis: "have you lost your mind?"

It was originally planned as just one movie but was a great success and they went on to make the other two. They are also real good. Be sure to give them a fair chance

There are a lot of references to Eddie Van Halen in this movie (his father’s “torture”, Marty’s wild guitar solo at the dance). This isn’t a coincidence. Eddie Van Halen was born in 1955, the same year Marty traveled to.

Dude commissioner with glasses in the sports hall wrote the main sound track for this film - "the power of love". This is Hugh Lewis and his band The News. The song is forever on my playlist.

Great film. I love all the subtle changes at the end. Most notably the "Twin Pines" mall being the "Lone Pine" mall, after Marty knocked down one of the pines in 1955. Also love that in 2016, Coldplay brought Michael J Fox on stage to play Johnny B Goode. Fun Facts: Every time you hear Marty playing guitar it is actually Eddie Van Halen. This was Eddie's favorite movie at the time, and it was also President Ronald Reagan's favorite movie. I can picture Eddie Van Halen and President Reagan sitting in the White House theater watching this and digging out of the same popcorn bucket. RIP Eddie Van Halen and President Reagan.

I think you'd really like "Time After Time," another time travel movie from 1979. It's not a comedy, but it does have funny moments, plus a love story and plenty of action and suspense. Its stars, Mary Steenbergen and Malcolm McDowell, fell in love not only in the picture, but also in real life while making it.

2:47 "I'm afraid you're just too darn loud." Says the guy who was singing in the song that was being played when Marty was skating to school. I always appreciated that irony. I can't wait for you to see the other two.

Lots of people have had their name on their underwear. The purpose is so that the owner can be identified and noone else will wear it. Especially common in families with multiple children but really any group living situation (boarding school, orphanage, jail, military, senior living facility)

One of the greatest reactions for one of the greatest movies of all time. I remember watching this the first time in '85 and I get the same glee watching it every time. I'm glad Magy enjoyed it so much too.

fun fact: the delorean motor company tried to make the car of the future at the time. like portrayed in the movie the car used to frequently break down, and so production was short lived.

I remember seeing this when I was 10 in theaters. I loved it then and still do. The story is clever and hilarious. An 80's classic.

I met Mr Fox in a guitar store once…he was incredibly kind and a cool dude 😎

Biff is the classic bully par excellence so much so that it's a little scary, you're going to love the part II.

Thomas Wilson (Biff character) is a terribly funny guy in person. He is so funny that when he worked with Mark Hamill for the cinematics of Wing Commander III and IV, after shooting each scene he added a hilarious remark that left people laughing for a while. Hamill says that he made his work very hard, because he needed to portray a dead serious, almost bitter character. This movie was for Thomas his chance to start a career in Hollywood and he did not want to screw it up. The actor who was before Michael Fox left him bruces when Marty pushed him. One day Thomas received a phone call from the producer saying that he needed to talk to hime personally. This kind of calls use to be for serious matters, so he try to see where he could have screwed up and he suspected he was going to be fired. He asked if it was possible to talk over the phone and the answer was no. So he had to drive a few hours and the most stressful time for him. When he arrived, the producer explained that they had to fire the other actor and hire Michael Fox and they needed to reshoot. And Thomas asked if these would be paid hours and they said yes. And he asked if there would be free lunch too as it was before and the answer was yes. And that way the soul of Thomas returned to his body.

Your reaction here made my day. I don't remember the first time I saw this, but your reaction took me back to the wonderful rollercoaster of emotions it always brings out. Thank you for putting a bit of joy in my day.

Some Easter eggs in the movie, were that maneur is from D. Jones aka relative of Indiana Jones. The music director for the school play is Huey Lewis and Marty is playing a version of his song that gets turned down for the school dance.

Great reaction Magy. The guy with the megaphone that told Marty's band that they were just "too darned loud" was Huey Lewis, the original performer of the song they were playing.

It was in theaters for over a year, which is pretty much unheard of these days.

Trivia time!! In 1985, the only trailer for this movie didn't show much, just MJF getting into the DeLorean and driving off, so when they filmed the movie in front of test audiences, they had no clue it was about a time machine, all they knew is Doc was supposedly crazy. They thought the car had disintegrated and Einstein was dead, but they were fine but skeptical when he came back until Marty was sent back to 1955. MJF was filming Family Ties at the time and his character was supposed to go camping with friends all summer until one of the other actresses had some personal issues to deal with which required him to work more, so the Family Ties crew and the BTTF crew had to make a schedule for him to film the movie: Wake up at 5 get put in the shower, get coffee and food, film for 9 hours for Family Ties, drive 45 minutes to film the Mall scenes around 7 pm start time, film about 7-8 hours, get driven home, sleep for a couple hours and do it all over again, work on the daytime shots on the weekends, then the schedule changed because any of the backlot night stuff like the clocktower scenes made the drive time about an hour or so. The DeLorean was a laughing stock of the sport car community. They used 5 or 6 cars and they all needed to have everything but the body and interior replaced with better parts even before the props and design department could even make any concepts because in tests, the stock DeLorean did about a top speed of about 65-70 mph and was a rough ride at those speeds, so they didn't even know if it would be feasible to use one. The actors and the stunt drivers were even more upset when they added all the props inside because it made it feel even worse. I can attest because I'm 5'10" and 200lbs and have been inside one with all the props, and it's not comfortable, though there is a descent amount of leg room because John DeLorean was well over 6 feet tall and wanted to daily drive his car. With how poorly it was received and his own legal problems, he was reluctant to let them use it because he didn't want it to become more of a joke, but after seeing the movie and the reaction, he thanked the film makers for respecting his car and bringing some good press to it. Ronald Regan laughed so hard at the "Who is president in 1985" joke that he missed about 10 minutes of the movie and needed it rewound. He used the line "Where we're going, there are no roads" in a speech later on in 1986. There won't be a Part 4 unless Bob Zemeckis and Bob Gale BOTH give the ok, and they can get the main cast back together or find a replacement that the cast member approves of. They have both said that will never happen, and they have a contract that says so, it also says that their estates also have the same decision making power passed to them when they die, but there are special instructions to follow should they consider it There's a theory that Doc wanted to kill himself and Marty during the first test should it fail. He wouldn't let Marty get to a safe distance, he lost his family fortune (which he still had a lot of money from, but still) he was a laughing stock in the town and scientific community, and Marty was the only one who believed in him, and he didn't want Marty to live thinking Doc was a failure. In all 3 movies, 1955 Doc goes on and on about how he's never invented anything that actually works before the time machine. The original concept for the time machine was a refrigerator, they even planned on the way to get Marty back to 1985 was to take the refrigerator to a Nuclear Test Town and basically just drive it in a truck, and Doc would jump out last minute and watch as the truck went into the test town and not know for the next thirty years if Marty made it back, or died. The abandoned this idea because refrigerators back then could only be opened from the outside and they didn't want kids to play pretend and get locked in a fridge and die.

You said most people don't write their names on their underwear; actually, some did. A lot of parents would send their kids off to summer camps, which were places (usually a bunch of cabins in the woods) where they'd teach kids arts and crafts, camping, canoeing, archery, etc. Parents would often write their kids' names on their underwear (and other clothes, I'm sure), just to make sure they didn't lose them. Because they'd usually have a bunch of kids living in the same room, sleeping on bunk beds, so it was possible to mix up their clothes. Crystal Lake, in the horror movie, Halloween, was a summer camp. My folks never sent us to camp, but a lot did.

Well, since you've seen this movie, you know that one of them is a key _plot_ point here. But I can tell you that _more_ of them will be key plot points in _sequels._ This is a reason we have to be so _careful_ with the development of time travel and who we allow to _use_ it. It doesn't take long, any time people start traveling in time, for things to get _mindbogglingly_ complicated.

The other two movies are really good. I saw this at 15 I think. It was AWESOME. I started doing some skateboarding after that movie. It was right before skateboarding became really popular worldwide.

The attention to detail is great. When Marty left, it was the Twin Pines Mall. After one of the pine trees was destroyed on the farm in the past, then when Marty gets back, it's the Lone Pine Mall. :)

Props to Huey Lewis. no reactor ever has ever recognized him.....EVER. maybe they are not old enough to remember or even know who he is? its a possibility. the search continues to see at least 1 reactor recognize him before they year 2019. when i watched this movie the first time i did a double take. i scanned the credits and sure enough that is him as the audition guy. thanks for the video.

I have been subscribed for a while now, Magy, and I just now saw your subscriber count. It's not low, by any means, but I was honestly surprised that it's not in the millions. I absolutely love your content! I look forward to your reactions to the other movies in this franchise.

Imagine a movie about high school kids trying to survive a Russian invasion of the U.S., starring Lea Thompson, who plays Marty's mom, Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze from Dirty Dancing, and a lot of other young stars. It's called RED DAWN (1984) and it's a great action flick.

OMG...great Cable TV movie!! They played this billions of times a day back in the 80's, on the various Cable Movie channels. =)

Back To The Future II & III were shot simultaneously, just like they did the LOTR trilogy and the first two Superman films in 1978/1980 (which you MUST watch). They set the bar for the superhero film genre!

Well, Magy, I can tell you, if you like _this_ one, you're sure to like part II and part III. Just let me give you this advice. Part II ends on the most _incredible_ cliff hanger, so don't watch it until you have part III all set to go.

That clocktower scene has to be one of the most flawlessly executed scenes in movie history. I'll bet I've seen that scene, in its entirety, upwards of 50 times and it is STILL thrilling to watch.

I did a college paper on this from the narrative of Doc Brown Origin Story. I went nuts w/ the stories and possibilties( ENG - Creative Arts 202) and got me an A+ and advised me to submit it as a possible screenplay. I still havent heard anything to this point. I luv Magys reaction to this, its just as i remember it walking out of the theatre and we all were talking and jumpy, needing to eat and talk at the nearest restaurant. Its magical fun, lightening in a bottle.

And it was funny to hear you muse about how everything could go wrong -- I knew for a fact that just about everything would! I enjoyed seeing you root for George so much. I just wish more people would realize how hard it was for him to stand up to someone like Biff. Yes, he acts like a silly violent cartoon character, but his size and strength are no joke, he knows how to hurt people, and he's not easy to fight. Fun fact - Michel J Fox almost didn't play Marty. They shot the beginning with another actor, but realized it wasn't going to work, so they had to jump through hoops to get MJF since he was doing another TV show at the time. if he appears dazed at times, it is not just acting, he really was tired from all the hours and very little sleep.

I'm glad you watched this movie. I remember seeing this in the theatre when it first came out and being surprised at how much better it was than I thought it would be. It's virtually impossible to not love this movie

They didn't really have a sequel in mind when they made that ending. They just thought it would be cool. But if you really think about it, it really makes no sense to go into the future to fix a problem that is only going to happen again when you go back to the past and get to that point in time again. But, they had already filmed it as the cliffhanger on the first one so they had to go from there. You definitely should watch part 2 and 3 as well. They work together really well. I also highly recommend the "Back to the Future" episode from the Netflix series, "The Movies That Made Us" (great series, by the way). It shows how much trouble they went through to get it made. The episode on "Forrest Gump" is also excellent.

He's not such a devoted student of _history,_ though, or he would know better than to beat Chuck Berry by three years. Now the band's _customary_ leader just stepped off stage to dial the phone and yell into the receiver, "Hey, Chuck. Yo, Chuck. It's Marvin. Your _cousin._ Marvin Berry." Oh. He's talking to Chuck Berry; the original _composer_ of this song. "You know that new _sound_ you lookin' for? Well listen to _this."_ And then he puts the receiver to the stage so Chuck can hear it. Now a pre-destination paradox is an event in time that makes its own occurrence possible. Here, they're implying that, for Chuck Berry, the creative juices were apparently not flowing. So they're implying that Marty McFly learned the song from Chuck Berry, but Chuck Berry also learned it from Marty McFly. A textbook example of a pre-destination paradox.
