Back to Linggajati (English version) - documentary about Dutch history in Indonesia - Joty ter Kulve

This version has English subtitles. You can turn them off (click the button in the bottom right corner), or watch the Dutch version: • Terug naar Linggajati ...
------------------

the word "Dutch" made my blood boil a little, which shouldn't have been necessary. the vibration of the struggle is still passed down through the blood of our ancestors, which does not mean revenge. Indonesia is still Indonesia, the Netherlands is still the Netherlands. In fact, for the Dutch there was no peace if in those years Indonesia was still weak. Thank you for sharing this documentary video, it shows that there are a small number of Dutch people who are kind, making me touched.

A message from Joty ter Kulve: Imagine you find yourself in a pitch dark room, can you fight the darkness by shouting, fighting ? No, the only way is to turn on the light. So many books, films are written about W.O.II. A war in which millions and millions lost their lives and innocence in Europe and Asia. For those people who got and get involved in a war and this goes for past, present and future history, the world becomes pitch dark, with just one question: how did we get into this mess and how are we getting out of it. This is reality. Reality has also taught us that all wars come to an end because humanity cannot afford to live forever in a dark hole, dark mess. So at one point after bitter fighting with knives, weapons or bombs, even atom bombs, people, a nation, nations become aware, understand that they have to talk, that diplomacy has to replace warfare. And mostly those who won the war will turn on the light. Their light. As for W.O. II, the U.S.A. had a defining part in the design of the political structure and the shaping of the future of those nations who lost the war, Japan and Germany. The conditions of the U.S.A. for the countries who lost the war were generous, hoping that this would help them to build democracies and renew their nations, which in the long run would be good for all of mankind. Germany drank the bitter cup of their defeat till the last drop. Painful and bitter the drink tasted. But together the German people managed to rebuild Germany with the help also of the money of General Marshall and the American citizens. They reshaped their nation: a new democracy was born. Germany started to blossom again and took her rightful place among the nations in the world. For Japan the transition was even more difficult. The Americans decided that their God-Emperor should become a people-Emperor . This had great consequences for the people of Japan. It was the respect and obedience to the God-Emperor for which the people were ready to die and which made them so cruel in their handling of the victims they made during the war. We victims were so afraid of the Japanese and Korean soldiers, because we knew that their willingness to die made us so vulnerable. Living on an island, the Japanese were never obliged to mix with other cultures, races. This fact certainly conditioned their thinking and positioning in the world. The fact that they had to surrender and accept to let the world decide to change their way of living must have caused a tremendous shock. Reality tells us that economically they managed to rebuild Japan; they still are the third economic power of the world. Contrary to Germany though, they are still grappling with their past during World War II. Let us face it, many nations ( also people ) are trying not to be confronted with not so nice things which happened in the long or nearby past. My nation still has not really come to terms with her colonial past. A shrinking world however forces people and nations to become transparent about their past. In a shrinking world with all the social media, (nearly three and a half billion are visiting the social market called Face-book) it gets tougher and tougher to hide important issues from each other. What’s more if we really want to solve the challenges mankind faces, we have to listen to each other and be humble. With the technological revolution changing the world, we also have to find a way to learn to observe ourselves, understand ourselves in order to understand our neighbors, our friends and enemies in order to find new ways to live together on this little planet. +Twan Spierts Why has Holland not come to terms with its history in Indonesia? My unscientific opinion is that whenever the Dutch folks I know speak about Indonesia with a sense of nostalgia--as if Holland was in Indonesia for the benefit of the Indonesians.

+San Patch Because most Dutch have parents, grandparents, etc. With nostalgic feelings regarding Indonesia. They get all teary eyed when you bring them to the annual village Pasar Malam (in Indonesia, the pasar malam is a night market, in The Netherlands it is a Indies-nostalgia event with food and stuff from Indonesia) and they smell all the spices. National Indies Day is still celebrated in elderly care homes, with old folks wearing their best sarong (even though they either never been to Indonesia, or, when in Indonesia, never worn such a thing). Most Dutch don't really understand why the Indonesians wanted independence, nobody ever sold that to us. It was a bit as if "well, the Germans took 5 days to take over the country, we held out a day longer when the Japanese came to the Indies, so we did quite well". Whereas the Indonesians were thinking "six days? really? you had one job. you know what, the belgians were right, next time we do it ourselves"

Watching this documentary with tears, seeing my people lived in poor n under pressure of Dutch. My grandfather was a soldier told me how he fought against Dutch, gathered in Jogja n how terrible they were ruled my country. But in some parts, I was thinking, Dutch had also made big influences to our people, one of example is built railway throughout Java, which it is good things for us. Indonesian were supposed to be living peace in their lands without any Dutch intervention..Dutch live in their land and war never happened.

Kelas pertama adalah Belanda, kelas 2 adalah Cina (karena mrk cukup pintar menjilat Belanda) dan terakhir baru orang lokal.

People rarely mention the alliance of Nazi party of german and japan. German attack the netherland and Japan attack the dutch and also the indonesian in former NEI. for the netherland kingdom, they rather let the amsterdam collapse under the nazi rather than let those 17000 islands out of their hand forever even until 1960's the dutch still want to take it back. as matter of fact the netherland kingdom never officially recognized Indonesia independence even until today. what make it strange, indonesia still adopted the dutch law.

Many Indonesian grow up taught to hate Dutch. Teachers and parents fill child mind with hatred, that has to be change. Special relation with Holland suppose to be good for Indonesia, and the other way around. We might be able to build a new VOC (the first global enterprise) in the right way. I believe there's still a chance for the two great civilization to rebuild its close relationship and prosper together. But the windows of opportunity is probably left open for the next two decades, after which there will be no more link between us, since most Indo / indishce / Dutch-Indonesian will became Indonesian or Dutch. While the systemic hatred education in Indonesia bring most young people to despise anything Dutch-related. But it will require massive effort to reform new Indonesia-Dutch relation.

I am Indonesian and I do not hate the Netherlands and Japan, that time has passed, let's move forward. in fact I was amazed by the Dutch building polders, maybe Indonesia should ask for cooperation to build polders in Jakarta, because Jakarta has begun to sink

And until now.. The Netherlands govt still admit that Indonesian independence was on December 27, 1949.. not August 17, 1945. I'm Indonesian.. my great grandpa was shot by Dutch soldier in Ambarawa central Java. Since then his children (including my granny) had a really hard life. I don't hate Dutch or Netherlands. I understand that it was war.

Yes Sukamo declared independence in 1945. But the dutch backed by the british tried to re-establish their rule for four more years. Thankfully for both our countries the dutch gave up and recognized indonesian independence.

xxxPassiexxx The argument goes much deeper than that. Freedom of the sea is what they use to completely delete fish stocks. Native peoples go starving because of factory ships on their coastline. We concentrate on the Japanese while we are much worse. Not many people eat whales.

Rizqon Kasir it was wrong from hindsight. VOC was organized piracy. Than the colonial period, kultuurstelsel followed by the ethical period. Exploitation at it's worse patronizing at its best. Glad it is all over easy to judge now with our computers and cell phones. The media was easy to be manipulated. The people mostly lived in cheer ignorance. It's not my habit arguing with people who are correct.

Thanks Joty for your sharing about Indonesian history, many indonesian people still have negative thinking about Indonesia and most of them know nothing for example, they think Holland is a country, Who is stupid? Indonesia does not make computers, laptops cars etc, they only produce them in licence, Indonesia never produced or developed a car, the Ships are produced and developed by western countries like the Netherlands ( the fregates ) G20 is 10 countries plus the European Union (Netherlands)

semoga kita dapat pelajaran dari masa lampau. dunia yg lebih baik bukan perang. saya perhatikan pengucapan bunyi vokal "R" bhs Belanda Omma Joty persis spt pengucapan dlm bhs Indonesia. byk yg bilang bunyi "R" bhs Indonesia sulit hanya org asli (native) yg bisa pas, gak lebih gak kurang kadang tegas kadang halus tp tetap terdengar bunyi "er" nya bahkan negara tetangga yg melayu aja gak bisa. lebih enak didengar bhs belanda omma joty dari pada suara Narasi di video, berdasarkan bunyinya saja krn saya gak bisa bhs belanda.
