Hi Charlie. Couple things I wanted to add. When testing power supplies, you must load it down to get an accurate view of what it is doing. A supply can, and most time will read a good +5 rail, but when loaded it will sometimes drop to ~ 1VDC. This shows an open in one of the regulatory transistors/pass element. I always run a 25W 5ohm power resistor (edit---needs to be a 1ohm resistor--see comment below) across the 5V line to load it to 5 amps of current, an ~22 ohm 25W resistor across the 12VDC line to load it to ~ 550 Ma. This by the way is how you have to test the "big blue" caps as well. When they are loaded, and in a working condition is the only time you will be able to see if it is properly filtering. If you do not load that 5V line, you will never see ripple across a "big blue" cap.

Thanks, Sean -- great tip! These load-test resistors should connect the 5V/12V rails to ground, right? Also, any advice for testing the sound board here? Thanks again!

yup.. connect right across the rails to ground. As far as the sound board. as always start with proper voltage. then move to socketed chips...there is a 6502 cpu and a 6532 riot chip. after that its a whos who of random ICs.. couple 741 amps and some 74 series stuff.

    Hi @classicarcaderepairs4818, wouldn't a 5ohm resistor across a 5V output generate 1A or 5W?

yes. you would need a 1 ohm resistor across 5v to produce 5 amps.. I may have mis-spoke. I use four- 4ohm 25W resistors in parallel to get to 1 ohm, and dissipate the heat over the 4 resistors instead of just one.

Thanks to this video I didn't even need to refer to the schematic when testing my qbert power brick. woohoo!! Also, similar to what @classicarcaderepairs4818 said...I wanted to mention when testing for ripple voltage, be sure to do so under load.

Govee makes isometric cube-like interconnected wall RGB LED panels that look just like Q-bert cubes called Glide Hexa Pro lights. I've been seriously considering getting a couple sets (comes with 10.) You can configure the colors of each face of the cubes and set up patterns and themes. So you can make a wall display that looks just like Q-bert, with the cube faces changing colors as if Q-bert is jumping along. For added fun, could add Q-bert, Coily, Sam, and Ugg stickers. My only concern with these relatively cheap panels is the proprietary software. :/ How long will I be able to configure the panels once the company goes out of business or refuses to update the software?
