I’m worried that these biopic films are becoming exploitative rather than informative or a celebration of their life. Amy was more than her alcoholism and eating disorder. The music industry, in my opinion, really suffered after Amy passed. There will never be another singer like her. Thank you for reviewing this 🫡

The film “Amy” which was more of a documentary was amazing. I loved it so much. I thought it was very informative and really captured all aspects of her life. It also made me cry. This movie I didn’t like really at all. I am an Amy Winehouse fan and I just thought the whole film was really about her relationship with Blake. As if she had nothing else really important in her life or about her apart from this toxic relationship which controlled every aspect of her life and even death. I think she was a lot more than that and it’s sort of disrespectful to present her life like this

I was shocked the actress from "Industry" portrayed Amy Winehouse. This film based upon the review seems like maybe a love letter to Amy and not a biography or based upon a true story. Studios are afraid of lawsuits that's why they allow "families" to provide notes. This reminds me of the Aretha biopic, it would have been better had Aretha's family not try to make her out to be Mary Poppins. Amy and Aretha were both complicated figures. There is nothing Disney or Nickelodeon about their lives. Amy was a complicated, misunderstood, troubled and talented soul. I think sugar coating the pain and trouble someone such as Amy Winehouse endured does an injustice to Amy. If Amy lived, I imagine she would want all the layers of her life told. Another great review as always.

Thanks for the review!! A few things I wanted to point out/ add in that really made me feel some kind of way. 1. Amy actually died about 6 weeks after leaving Rehab. 2. Blake leaving made her die (I know it’s harsh, but real fans know. He did not care for Amy the way she cared for him. If so, he would’ve stayed with her until she was clean and then left. He was still in jail, like) 3. Her dad always disrespected her. Idk why they made him into some like hero but she definitely did not care too much for him. He was upset about her and Blake and made her suffer for it 4. They left out her and Nas the rapper’s relationship. 5. They decided that we didn’t neeed to see what led up to Body N Soul which is the silliest thing EVER bc that was the pinnacle of her iconism. 6. She had an affair with one of her band members 7. They didn’t give You Know I’m No Good any shine, but gave Me & Mr Jones, the song about Nas, a moment?? 8. Her black god daughter. She was with her dad on the low 9. They left out her worst performance ever… that made the fans cry and worried. She was so incoherent. So sloppy. And she was on the actual stage, not the scene when she was drunk in the pit of the stage.. 10. It bothered me that she was not as adorable as Amy… Amy had soft, deer like features that eventually changed. But the actress didn’t give that.. Whew.. fellow Amy Stans, please add in

@@Itsbrittanicayani ok, so if I’m in prison, and my spouse is telling me they’re clean (along with other people telling me that they’re clean, the consensus among her friends and family is that’s when she stopped taking drugs) and telling me they have met someone else and are in love with them, I’m not allowed to divorce them? I’m going to be blamed for their death two years later (she was engaged to someone new two years later also, so I’m assuming she was at least somewhat over the heartbreak)? You’re also assuming he’s cheating on her while he’s in prison, and that one should mandatorily stay with their spouse if they cheated first. Kinda victim blamey. There’s no excuse for cheating no matter how fucked up either of them were. If you cheat you can ask for a divorce, rightfully so. Either way, you’re allowed to end a toxic relationship whenever you want for whatever reason (and it’s realistic to expect to not be blamed for another adults death because of it, especially if it’s two years later 🤣). And two years later is a fact, we know when she died 🤣. Even if he did dump her and she killed herself the next day blaming him in a suicide note, adults are not responsible for other adults lack of coping skills, they are both responsible for their own mental health.

This movie irks me (not having seen it). The doco was pretty powerful - an unflinching look at a mesmerising, tragic figure (forgive the cliche). It did NOT leave me wishing I could see a dramatisation. Making this movie feels like a voyeuristic replication of the exploitation that was such a feature of her self-destructive career. I guess I could imagine using her story to examine some aspects of the issues that affected her. Doesn’t sound like that’s what we got. But some people got paid work, so I hope that was worth it.

I liked this movie. Biopics are always precarious. They are always told linearly. Instead of opting for that device it tackles a specific portion of her life. Instead of giving me the missing parts that you pointed out it focuses on her inner turmoil. The part where her Nan tells her that she has cancer in a lesser film would've had a melodramatic scene. Instead it has her self-medicating with alcohol alone in silence. I think what the film does is it says that Amy has a foundation but it is slowly compromised. It also has parts like in the Amy documentary where there were lost opportunities for intervention. I liked it. But my favorite biopic is still Coal Miner's Daughter.

Reports that the family estate gave their blessing in a warning sign; punches are being pulled; Mitch & Blake are innocent of self-interest here vs the doc; (there is an interesting interview he gives on Brit TV that's on youtube) So much is left out; the director does give much screen time to Amy's lyrics while many elements go wanting. Minus relevant plot points thus robs the movie of its impact. Oddly bland and disjointed. Thanks for your observations!
