270 Winchester has been around since 1925. I would have to add the 375 h&h magnum to that list. Been around since 1912 and is super versatile from deer to elephants.

Great video by Tom (as always) but agree 100% with the 375 H&H on that list. Here in Africa it's an absolute legend and sometimes a must carry for protection. Amazing cartridge that can be loaded for 30-06 like ballistics from a 270gr bullet or thump with a 320gr.

Spot on! Hornady is making millions off the "new fangled", "latest and greatest" cartridges. I am staying with the old faithfuls.

Some are here to stay. 6.5 CM is no longer a fad. Some trends are odd. I noticed a couple of bolt rifles that don't offer any 8x57 (.30-06) bolt face cartridges in their standard action length. Yet they offer that bolt face in their short actions... odd.

Well, there is at least one 6MM Remington Hunter out here, me. I’m with Joey, the 24’s are deer harvesting machines! Like he said, put it in the shoulder and you’ll have meat and just behind the shoulder with a lead tip 100 grain upper moderate speed and you’ll have more meat and your shoulder will appreciate it too.

The older I get and the more I learn, the more I respect the old cartridges. Up here in Canada we get more access to the European cartridges. Last year I hunted with the 9.3x62 and it was tremendous for hunting moose. This year I am trying the 8x68s, from the late 1930s, also hunting moose with it. But what a cartridge! 8mm 200 grain bullet at 3k fps. What a great video Tom, keep up the great work!!

I own two 9.3x62 rifles that I hunt deer with in Mississippi. And that 8x68 is an amazing cartridge. A lot of people don’t realize some of those European cartridges do things being very old that new cartridges struggle to do today. Example 8x68, 6.5x65 and 6.5x68, 9.3x62, 9.3x64. 7x64 so many great European cartridges that people don’t realize are out there.

What brass are you using for your 8x68s loads? I've been debating on building one, but brass availability looks scarce for that cartridge. I like the idea of being able to share the .323 bullets I already have for the 8x57 IS and bracket a load for it.

I don't reload yet, but this 8x68 will push me to learn as it is not easily available. I got lucky and found a few boxes of Norma with a Swift A-Frame bullet. I am happy to report it was Thor's hammer on a 1300 lb moose at 115 and 175 yards. The first shot went through both shoulders and rested on the skin, with 68% retained weight. The second shot at 175 was quartering away, went in through the ribs and out the opposite shoulder, with a large exit wound. I would say it is similar in output to a 338 Win Mag, but 30% less recoil.

It is really amazing. The whole Remington Ultra Mag family of cartridges died. Of the WSM only the .300 had any traction. The WSSM Series were an abortion.

I have yet to see ANY rebated rim cartridge last. Always have extraction issues.

270 I will say it's harder to find ammo for, and maybe it's going away . But 300wsm I believe is here to stay. In any case I have them and the old 300 win. Magnum and 270 win. Great cartridges, and I love my 270 win.

You are correct on the 300wsm! I know a little bit since collecting 60+ years and they are still making rifles chambered for it and it is one of the best all around calibers!

Good to see you back. I started watching your other channel. Thank you for the content and prospective your provide.

Availability of ammo is everything. Here in Australia, we are at the end of a long supply chain and our hunting is expensive and also tightly regulated. There are limits where you can hunt and what times you can hunt. Even for feral pests like pigs. Rifles down here hold their value because we are not allowed to have many and they have to be secretly stored. And getting a license is possible, but difficult. So if you go onto the website of our biggest gun shop chain, and you look at what ammo is available, the results are interesting. In 243W there are 30 different loads to buy. The next most popular is the 308W at 19. The 7mm-08 which I think is a terrific hunting cartridge, there are only four. But the big surprise is the 6.5x55 at 14 with the 140gn softpoint round nose the biggest seller. What does this say? 1. The 243W is the most versatile cartridge out there, hunting or on the range. And the 6.5x55 is the most long lasting of them all.

Love how you can bring the simple things back and show the reality of how it is just as good (maybe better) than what “they” want us to think.

Great review Tom. Sound info handed out to established and new shooters/hunters alike. Old school folks like myself tend to stay focused on what has worked and foregone the urge to buy something new with every turn of the page of a guns and ammo magazine. I have tried the 6.5Cm but nothing special above my 6.5 Swede so that one went on down the road.

I understand this completely. One of my favorite rounds I have to admit is dead, and that's 264 win mag. Fortunately it shares a case with 7mm rem mag and that guy ain't going anywhere anytime soon. Nearly every cartridge I buy or own shares a case with one of the originals.

Great video! I built a hunting rifle earlier this year chambered in 30-06. I did not have a good hunting rifle since I sold my 8mm mauser about 4 years ago to help with tech school. I love the ole reliable cartridges and rifles. Have fun 4th of July.

Thanks for another "simple" video. I think the long-range craze has had a huge effect on the introduction of new cartridges, chasis, scopes, etc. The old standby cartridges are cartridges we grew up with. It will be interesting to see what the standby cartridges will be in another 20 yrs.

I have gone around and around trying out different cartridges and have settled on a .35 Whelen, 30-06, 6.5 creedmoor and a .243 as my deer/ elk choices. I do have a 30-30 my Dad gave me when I was young that I am wanting to get a deer with open sights, I got my first deer with it, and getting one with open sights would be awesome!

I like your bottom line and accurate statements about most subjects relating to rifles, ammo and reloading! Keep it up in 2024!! I could’ve purchased a new rifle chambered in one of those “fancy” offerings, but I went with the 7mm Rem Magnum since the ballistics are great despite of the belted cartridge. The SAKO S20 in 7mm brought home a nice cow elk in early December and the freezer is full!

Back to Basics makes perfect sense Tom !! If the pre-1964 Winchester M70 was chambered in it, it's probably a good enough cartridge to consider when choosing what caliber to get (except I don't know if there are pre-64 M70s in 300 WM, so add the the 300 WM round which came out in 1963!).

The 300 WM was made the last year of the pre64’s my dad had one he hunted with for years! He traded in his pre64 in 308 feather weight for the 300WM and had a whole lot one shot kills in elk especially with the Nosler handloads!

I have a Ruger 77 in 6.5x55 that does everything the 6.5CM can do and a 9.3x62 that covers everything from .375 H&H to the 06.

I own and have used the 243 and 257 Roberts on deer and antelope with great success, but the 257 warms my heart more than the 243.

One of the. Most. Truthful. Opinions. I’ve. Heard. In a long time. You nailed. It. But. If you need. To. Put food on the table 22. Long rifle. Is king.

Great stuff as always Tom and I absolutely agree with your list (Just missed the 375 H&H 😉) I'm lucky enough to own a few on the list starting with 270 Win M70 that is an absolute joy with bullet weights from 110gr - 145gr and used mostly for longer hunting in the open areas here in South Africa. 30-06 M77 that I like to load heavy (200 - 220gr) for bushveld hunting and performs phenomenally on any occasion without fail. And finally, 375 H&H Mag loaded with 270-320gr for those times you require a little extra weight. I can absolutely recommend any of these cartridges to all new and perhaps not so new hunters. Thank you for always providing great content, much appreciated.

well at least i have 4 of the cals you picked and so far they still work on what i use them for the 22lr ive shot a bunch of small game 7mm rem mag put my moose down with 1 shot and wife got her moose with my 30-06 most of my deer have gone down with the old 06 but my last deer fell to my 308 win learning in my old age the 308 has lots less recoil then the 06 does and still does a great job in my area in central maine

Thanks for keeping with the traditional cartridges! So many jumping on the latest fad in cartridges that come and mostly are gone. Both are great but the traditional cartridges keeps our culture grounded. Thanks and happy birthday USA!

👍😊 this really hit home with me and am glad I made the decisions I did when getting some rifles . I’m 53 and have been using these rounds for a long time . There s a rifle here for every cartridge you’ve shown up to the 30.06 which has been a favorite of mine for too many reasons to list . For me , I just like how it hits where I’m shooting on a windier day . One of my favorite things to do is grab a .22 and go for a walk to plink around . I haven’t been killing animals lately . AR s are fine and dandy I guess .they’re fun .I still prefer to take a bolt action though for some reason . Man , I love the guns but I’ve been into knives lately . Before that it was compound bows , lol I like to bud o around from hobby to hobby and revisit and let things rest . Have a great day . Heard there’s a new cartridge coming out tomorrow 😂

"The 243 is a good deer cartridge ". A lot of people think it is good for even bigger game like elk and moose. A friend of mine was deadly on dozens of elk, moose, black bear, besides all the regular deer and antelope with a 6mm Remington. When his wife and daughter both drew moose tags, he set them both up with 243's with nosler partition bullets and both ladies each dropped a nice bull moose with their 243's. None the less, the 243 would not be my first pick for elk and moose.

Like this video it’s about time someone just ad common sense to the conversation. I would ad the 375 H & H to the list.

People are commenting the way that I would. I have a handful of .308s and I could take any deer and even a mule deer with one. And, for the reasons of velocity, .308 is better at sub 400 yards than farther. Similar bullets that are heavier, such as .30-06 and .300 WM are going faster and are not subjected to the wind for as long a time. Which helps. On the other hand, I have also heard that for 200 yards and closer, you can use a 7mm-08. It is basically a .308 lite. That is, it will have the performance required with less recoil impulse. So, hunters with frail frames or even arthritis find it a managable round that still gets deer. And when other rounds came around, I just stuck to my .308. 6.5 Creedmoor? Cute and accurate and I have seen a few take big game with it. .300 PRC? A noble and expected evolution of .300 WM, if you can handle the recoil impulse. 6.5 PRC? A more accurate and faster version of 6.5 CM, trying to slim down the amount of drop. 6.8 Western? A few people really liked that round but there are only two makers and the industry is just losing interest. But I did get bit by the 7 mm PRC bug and having one. And I think the availability is no getting better. Most makers already have a model on the market and others are releasing one and it is meant to be a hunting rifle that is good at any range and also great for long distance targeting. It outshines most other cartridges past 500 yards. Primarily because it is has less drop than most and a lot of that has to do with the SAAMI spec. The free bore is small. Even budget rifles have to be built as precision rifles. The difference is whether you get a pencil barrel or a medium bull barrel. It could be better for hunting in windy conditions with some applications similar to .300 WM. In short, you don't have to dial windage. You can hold left or right edge of the target zone into the wind and you will get a round in. The limit is the accuracy of you and the rifle. If you and the rifle are getting 1 MOA on the cold bore to second shot, don't shoot a deer past 400 yards. However, a rifle should be zeroed to cold bore. And the follow-up second shot should be 1.047 inches or less. It is a standard magnum. In fact, you could take a .300 WM action and change barrels and it uses a .300 WM magazine. But it is a long barrel and for thick woods, a .308 with a 165 grain and hunting tip will do everything you need. I always wonder how many people hunt with maybe a .224 Valkerie, for example?

I have passed on some great like new 270 wsm and 300 wsm rifles because of the lack of ammo availability you mentioned….and if you do find some at a gun show or retailer it’s crazy expensive…

30-06 is what I have on hand at my house. I've shot many rifles, wanted to purchase many rifles, but the 30-06 is the only one I seem to keep. I've modified my 30-06 with nylon straps that I grip with my hands when shooting, so all the recoil is absorbed throughout my arms and not just my shoulder, so the 30-06 at my house shoots like a pillow. Can't say enough good things about it. But now that I think about it, maybe I'd take a .22LR, .30-06, and .338-378 WBY MAG and that would be the only 3 I'd probably ever need in my lifetime.

All of my firearm’s are in the classic calibers. I recently (reluctantly) purchased a 6.5 creedmoor for a family member. I waited years to buy him that rifle and put it off for a few years but figured at this point there are so many rifles produced in 6.5 I figured they will always make ammo for it. But to be safe I purchased enough rounds and a set of reloading dies so I can always load up some rounds for him.

Glad you mentioned the triple duece. It's a shame a cartridge with the inherent accuracy the 222 has is in the downward spiral.

I would normally agree but with the exception of the 270 Winchester short magnum. The best all around hunting cartridge for reloaders.

Great video Tom! I enjoy watching your videos. I have a question about the .223 Rem and your comment on finding a rifle today with a 1 in 12 twist. I’m aware that the trend has been to shoot heavier and heavier bullets lately and these need a faster twist rate to stabilize. I’ve got AR platform rifles with 1in 8 and 1 in 7 barrels to handle heavier/longer bullets. I also have an older model Tikka bolt action in .223 with a 1 in 12 twist. What bullets would stabilize well with that twist rate? And what disadvantages are there for using faster twist rates for all .223 barrels? In other words, does a faster twist rate have a detrimental impact on shorter/lighter bullets? Thanks again for your content and easy going style!

I have successfully hunted deer and antelope with the 308 in a number of rifles with great results, but the rifle the cartridge is chambered in has a lot to do with my satisfaction of the cartridge. I have a savage 99 in 308 that I just love.

When hunting with any cartridge, its all about boolit placement assuming your using the correct boolit for your use. We all know that. I just don't understand why some use such large caliber for medium game. Great common sense video.

Your spot on. My brother-in-law Son has 270 SM. Getting brass is none to be had. The parent Case is also out of stock. Even with my 280 Remington I can neck up 270 or neck down 30-06 brass. I have Never worried about the 280. I just necked down 308 to 7mm-08 and turned the necks. Even though I had 100 pieces of new brass, why because I can. Has anyone seen 338 Win Mag brass?? I am thinking of taking 7mm Rem Mag and necking up the easiest is necking down 300 Win Mag brass, but I have that gun also and don't want that head stamp . Anyway, great video and your 100% Correct In today's shortages of components, you have to be resourceful.

I had a 6mm Remington rem 700 bull barrel laminant stock not a practical hunting rifle so I let it go. Now I. Looking for a model 7 so I can use up the ammo I still have for it. I have an old 35 Remington ammo is scarce on that too

Just a couple hours ago picked up a Savage/Springfield model 840 in 30-30 with an 18 in barrel.

Nice! The biggest limiting factor of the 30-30 on range has always been the iron sights on lever actions. Put a 30-30 in a bolt gun and add a scope and you just greatly extended its range.

@@TomRiverSimpleLiving My thoughts were to use it for a brush gun since where I hunt here in NE Al is pretty thick with most shots being very close. It did come with a scope mount and I'm sure that I won't be able to not see how it shoots with some pointy handloads. With that said I have a vintage one made Bushnell Scopemaster 4x32 that I'll stick on it.

I just got in to 308win. and the 30-06spr. I like the 30-06 better for my and I got both in the same rifle and 22inch barrel and the same Red Field Revaluation scoop on both.

I deer hunt & coyote hunt with a NEF ultra lite single shot 223, I own a few old 30-30's but haven't found a Buck yet that can take a hit from the 223 high shoulder and get away more than 20 yards. I hunt in thick stuff 100 yards or less usually 50 yards or less. Been running a .223 for 19 years of using it and have no reason to look at anything else.

Have no problem with Krieger cut chambers in my 3006 s . Think there is a difference with reamers from1906 and now. And not just longer. To many think they have the midas touch.

The 6.5 caliber's will definitely stick around seems like everyone loves the 6.5 creedmoor and PRC rifles if I want a new rifle at Scheels I'm guaranteed one

If I had to , I could take deer and hogs with minimum calibers like 223 and 357 magnum but you have to place your shots carefully. Next step up is 30-30 and 243 power class. A little more forgiveing for slightly less than perfect shot placement but very little insurance in killing power. Jump up to larger bores and case capacity and you are in the sweet spot for deer and hogs. If forced to. I could do just fine with a 22 rimfire magnum but why? There are too many 30-30 , 308 , and 30-06s around.

Great video Tom. I am often wondering why the 7mm-08 is not more popular than it is. When i was looking for a bolt action deer rifle, i went with 308 since the rifle was not offered in 7mm-08. Did not get my favorite deer cartridge, buy my second favorite is ok too I also wanted to built a light weight deer rifle for WV. The 308 is no fun carrying up mountains. Since i am not a gunbuilder or gunsmith, i went with the AR platform. While deciding on a cartridge, I found the 300 Ham'r developed by Bill Wilson. If they stop making cartridges for this, they are easily made with 223 brass. Just stretched to 30 cal. 125 gr at around 2500 fps....

Tod, for me lighter rifles is where the 243 shines. With lighter rifles comes more recoil but the 243 being a soft shooting cartridge it's still pleasant to shoot. But most people just don't trust such a small round.

Hey Tom. How bout a video on all those cartridges that fell into obscurity.

Use the cartridge that best suites your hunting and use it. Deer and game animals haven't changed in the last 200 years and are easily harvested as they were back then. You dont have to have the latest and greatest to hunt, especially since the prc class bullets dont offer much more at most hunting distances in the woods. You would have to hunt the high mountain winds and cross canyon, or plains lands to see a difference.

Actually even in terrains where long shots may be taken and where the hunter may have to deal with cross winds, the new high B.C cartrdiges wouldn't offer a significant advantage. These new Creedmoor, PRC, etc. cartridges have been basically developed thinking in long range bench rest shooting, but marketed among the hunting community.

Great video. I follow your channel as I am currently restoring a Lee Enfield .303/25. It's interesting that you mentioned the .257 Roberts as I believe that cartridge is very similar to the .303/25 although the Roberts has a slightly higher case capacity. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the. 303/25.

I would absolutely love to shoot a 303/25! That's a cartridge that just isn't seen here in the U.S. and I've never personally shot one or even seen one. With that said the first time I heard about the 303/25 I thought that would be an outstanding cartridge! And I still think that.

22 lr, 223/5.56, 270, 308 and 8mm mauser (7.92x57) are my battery. I think I'm good on rifles for the rest of my life.

The plain jane cartridges have been getting the job done for a hundred years. What goes with that is profiency with a good dependable firearm. Thats basicly what my collection revolves around. Standards of equipment and my profiency!! My job is good practice sessions and trying different cartridges and weight bullets!! Gathering standards. Make me happy with what i have from 45-70 down to 22Lr. My neighbor has many many rifles but his favorite is an early 60s chambered in 218bee. He has taken many varments here taking his chickens and goats. The unfortunate thing is the 218bee is basicly extinct. He will soon have to hang the bee 🐝 up on the wall. Ammo is mega bucks these days..... if you can find it! Shame for him but the 22lr and the 223 will have to be the new practice standards for him too.

I spend too much time with cartridges that have become handload-only such as the 350 Rem Mag, 8x57, 32 Winchester Special, 303 British, 7x57, and 444 Marlin. Fortunately I still have some of your standards: .30-'06, 308, and .30-30. I did manage to get out of the 303 Savage and 6.5 Swede games though.

It's funny you say that Craig because I just finished up the video for this Sunday on the 280 Rem and I mentioned that some cartridges were for handloaders and I specifically mentioned the 7x57 and 257 Roberts then. And a particular rifle that I have been keeping an eye out for for several years now is in 6.5x55. So I'm still in some of those games myself but it sure is nice to be able to just go buy a box of ammo and go shooting or hunting on occasion!

I like all the standbys, my problem is I like 25-06AI and 280AI and 303 British as well.

Isn’t a whole heck of a lot you can’t accomplish with a good 222 Remington and a 300 Savage. Was a time here in central Pa when you told someone you hunted with a “300” they knew you meant 300 Savage.Nowadays not so much.

Marketing will always create new products to sell. Are they necessary? Probably not! If I didn't already have some of those traditional cartridges I would consider some newer cartridges that I believe are here to stay. The 6.5 prc is definitely here to stay. I have a 270 Winchester, why would I buy the prc when it doesn't give me a decided advantage over the 270? I don't have a 300 mag of any kind so I might be convinced to get a 300 prc. No belt, little better velocity, larger bullets stabilized in a tighter twist rifle. If I was in brown bear country I would probably choose it over my 7mm rem mag or 30 06. I don't hunt there so my 7mm rem mag and 30 06 are more than enough for Moose and Elk. It's a matter of application, availability and effectiveness on game in the area you are hunting and what you are after.

Darryl, I wouldn't be so quick to say the PRC is here to say? A lot of people said the same thing about the Winchester short mags and don't forget the Remington short ultra mags (SAUM). Only time can tell if the PRC's will last.

I've put close to 200rds through my 7mm-08 and I have never personally seen a cartridge with a 7mm-08 headstamp.

I shoot a lot of .308win and have saved literally hundreds of cases over a period of several years. I bought the 7mm-08 a couple years ago and the only store bought ammo to be had cost at least double what it was when I started thinking that I might want one. I started handloading and necking down my .308 cases and Wala I don't need their stinking ready rolls.

243 is ok on those small deer you got ware u live. But the deer up north are 250 300lbs big bucks. Twice the size of southern deer . The 243 isnt enough for big rough tough north mountain deer. Its just not. Minimum of 308/30.06 is the threshold up here.

You have the different families. The 30-06 family with 308w and all their offspring. The 375h&h parent case family with the 300wm,7 rm and 338wm. The 222 rem family with 223 in the top position. What hornady has done is to start a 375 ruger family 300 prc 7 prc 6.5 prc 338 rcm 300 rcm And so on. My guess is that is why they are spitting out new cartridges. As i see it we often settle on two balanced choices. The neat one and its bigger brother. 308,30-06 22lr, 22wmr 223, 22-250 7mm-08, 7mm rem mag 6.5 creed, 6.5 prc (The jury is still out on the small 6mm) but the bigger balanced one is 243 win. 257roberts, 25-06 270win, (6.8 Western is aiming for this spot) How is that for a theory 😁

I like that theory and it sounds spot on to me. Maybe it's just human nature but do always seem to want that little bit extra!

Russell, I think the 6.5CM has hit critical mass and will be here just because it has gotten so popular? But people thought the same thing about the 300 Savage at one time to so only time will tell.

@@TomRiverSimpleLiving The 300 Savage is one of my favorite cartridges. I have two Remington 722's and a Remington 700 Classic chambered in the 300 Savage. All very accurate and very reliable. Unfortunately, it has become a reloaders cartridge. For me, besides the 7mm-08 cartridge, it is the ideal whitetail and hog cartridge.

And as bad as i hate to say it 6.5 creed is getting close to passing 308 for the standard

Minimum requirement for moose in Canada is the 243 Winchester. At the end of the day, they all work. We’re blessed to have the constant innovation anchored by the gold standards. If anything, fighting for the rights to keep the ability to have firearms and access to the variety, is more important than the cartridge itself.

I had a ruger 220 swift me and a buddy shot a bunch a whole bunch of groundhogs with that rifle. What bullets are you trying to find for your 6.5

Jerry, I hate to say it but I don't think the 260 Remington is going to be here much longer? I don't even know if anyone still chambers a new rifle in 260? And that goes back to what I said in the video, how good the cartridge is has nothing to do with whether it lasts or not and I do agree that the 260 Remington is a great cartridge. But thankfully you'll always be able to convert 243 or 7mm-08 brass to 260 if they ever quit making brass.

Tom ,Tikka and Savage, as well as Remington chamber rifles in 260 Remington, it's a shame ,such a great cartridge and one of the 308 family.

Techers shoud have tot rifles in scool. I think weed hav feer problems if we had.🤙to lat now🤔

I have a .223, 22-250, .243, .270, and a .308 the only man bun cartridge I have added is the 6.5 creedmore lol

The 300wsm isn’t going anywhere soon! I have hunted collected and reloaded for 60+ years and the 300wsm is one of the very best all around calibers! I have many premium rifles but my Sako in 300wsm is my go to caliber!
