Back on top: music producer William Orbit on his return to music
William Orbit was one of the great pop architects of the Y2K era, including Madonna's Grammy-winning Ray of Light and the critically-acclaimed Blur album 13. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
His record sales soared to a staggering 200 million - turning him into the go-to producer for likes of Prince, U2, Kraftwerk and Queen. But then a move to LA coincided with a string of high-profile flops.
Four years ago - after moving back to the UK, his drug addiction was compounded by a nervous breakdown. But that's all changed, his creativity is back, with a second album on the way - as he's been telling Krishnan Guru Murthy.

I think SC1 & 2 were warm-ups, but SC3 changed my life (although to be fair, it was my introduction to him), and SC4 (as it should be called!), is amazing too.
There's nothing more satisfying than going through a rough patch, no matter how long, then starting to see the light shine again.
Strange cargo 3 was the only album I listened to for a whole year in 1993. So much depth and nuance with multilayered melodies over the soft dance beat.
Pure Shores is one of the most beautiful pop songs ever.

Damn he was a huge part of the late 90s/early 2000s pop sound, which I think has aged really well.
Love this guy. I had the great good fortune in the early 90’s to do a couple of tours with William and Bassomatic. What a talent and all round nice guy.

Genius, of course, but also a beautiful, humble man. Much respect, maestro.
The interview didn't even mention Barber's Adagio for Strings, that was an anthem of the 90's.
Bass-O Matic - Fascinating Rythm. The anthem from the early 90s.

Unfortunately I read that William had a hard time working with Damon Albarn, He wasn’t pleasant apparently. Orbit has a genius. Glad he’s open to It working through him. Genius worked through him even as a child.
What a fascinating and down to earth man.
one underrated genius. One of my favourite composers from the 90s

I just Luv Adagio for Strings. It is a haunting piece that brings back melancholic memories. And sends me to tears...❤

WELCOME BACK WILLIAM...YOU ARE BETTER THAN EVER !
William Orbit who has made prominent music for the last several decades: I would create and imagine symphonies in my mind Newscaster that has never made any music: That's not normal I have never made any music, but I would imagine it is like imagining how you are going to paint something, all the layers, the different sections and how they will work together to create that final vision. Glad to see Mr. Orbit creating his art after taking a breather.
Strange Cargo and Madonna's Ray of Light albums are great
Complete legend
Hello Waveforms has been on heavy rotation since 2006.
Incredible how many artists he worked with and all those songs were incredible
I had no idea he was behind pure shores! I came here because ray of light is an incredible track and wanted to see what else he had engineered. Pure shores reminds me of being a kid along with ray of light… some really clever production and he makes very powerful music 😎 he’s a genius
Brilliant William! Thanks for bringing all this music to life for us!
His best work is still his work with Madonna. But a lot of producers’ best work is their work with Madonna. She’s an incredible songwriter and producer and pushes people to give her their very best.

he is a genius. one of a kind
I mostly know his work from his solo projects. “Strange Cargo III” is a masterpiece but his Madonna, more pop contributions don’t work for me. Britain’s Mark Mothersbaugh in my opinion. He worked on the famous All Saints song? Blimey, that makes me nostalgic.
if you listen closely, Frozen (Madonna) and Pure Shores (All Saints) have similar samples in the song.

I just noticed it today. Been a big fan of Pure Shores for years since it came out really, heard Frozen before but never really paid attention to the production until today when I noticed the same keys/pad sound used on Pure Shores in Frozen, the 2 chord gentle stabs. Great productions.

Genius. An amazing musician.
Wonderful musician with some lovely chillout tunes, then his producing for other artists.

He should be working with T swift. Martin and shellback gave her some of the best pop songs of the 2010s. William could do it for the 2020s with her.
Not to be offensive but did Mr. Orbit have a stroke or a medical condition, his lips and face seems to droop a bit or uneven?

today I listened to 'black coffee' ten times in a row, as loud as I could stand, trying to pick apart the unusually dense arrangement. I spotted all kinds of things in there, even noting that the gated organ part sounded a lot like townsend's lowry part in "won't get fooled again" (a multitrack I briefly had access to, years ago, while visiting the studio that the cocteau twins rented from PT as 'september sound'). but a lot of it eludes me. I'd love to find stems, or a breakdown of the arrangement. the remixes on the same EP are awful. I mean, why bother? you're not going to improve on WO when it comes to this sort of pop. a master, up there with spector & very few others.
