Back on the "RV 454" bigblock Chevy. How to start it on cheap engine cradle.

Just got my RV 454 ready to run on a $60 dollar engine cradle from Speedway. Cheap way to get an engine running outside the vehicle. Going to run it a couple times and then put it on a stand to disassemble down to the bare block. Changing every single part. Building for 700+hp/600+tq NA and 9s in the 1/4 in a gutted G-body. Backing it up with a manual T-400 with 5000 BTE convertor & 4-57 gear on a 35 spline spool in a 9in Ford rear. 28x10.5x15 slicks.

Probably the process of building them is most enjoyable to me these days. Many times I build them and then just push it off in a corner for years. And I build too many at once. Wish I could focus on one at a time. I've always had at least 5 to 10 engines under construction at any given time since I was young. Sometimes 10 to 20 units under construction. But that was when I was still building them for customers. Old age slowed me down.

I went to start the damn thing today and that old fuel pump done dried up. Been 8yrs or better since it ran. Wired a old electric pump up and that damn thing quit working. But I happened to have a nice chrome Carter mechanical pump sitting around and I swapped it on there. It pumped up right away. So gonna try it again tomorrow. It busted off for a second, pretty loud. So the neighborhood would probably call the blue man. About 11:30pm now. Just got the shit sorted out.

How good did the 403 Olds run? I have a 350 and a 425. Looking to build a spicy street car. Its hard to find headers for a big block Olds based G body so I have some work in the 350. I was gonna use the Big block B heads I have but its gonna kill the compression. Would you waste time on 350? I have a set of 6 heads Im trying to port. I know the 425 is gonna be pretty mean. I had a 455 in my last one. You know how pricey these olds are.

I ran mid 7s in the 8th with that 403. Drove it daily too. Used milled J heads and KB pistons. Lunati Streetmaster cam. It was pretty rowdy. 3500 stall & 3.73 gear 8.5 rearend. Just didn't want to spin it too high without a girdle & hardblock. Definitely not as good as the 425 and 455 engines, but the 403 can be pretty good for a Street/Strip type car. Bigblock G-body headers are impossible to find now. I have a pair of Hooker Super Comp swap headers I bought 30+yrs ago, they costed a fortune back then. Now they are discontinued.

The Olds 350 has alot of potential too. I've seen a few rowdy race versions. The 68-72 blocks are the best 350s except for the later diesel DX blocks. They were the stoutest Olds blocks made period. People had them up over 1000+hp in Pro Stock back in the early 80s. Look up Dave Smith. Parts availability is what sucks for Oldsmobile engines these days. And cost.

I ran high 6s in the 8th with a 1966 Toro 425 in a 3000lb G-body. It had alot of work done to it. Secret was the big roller cam and the 12-1 compression. Used ported & milled C heads on it. Cut for 7/16 studs and used SB Ford roller rockers. The stock rods were the weak spot. Ended up bending a rod. Didn't break, just bent the rod a good bit. Had ARP bolts everywhere. I'd turn it up 7000rpm. Stock forged crank was indestructible.

I used a 1966 330 forged crank in my 403, & polished 403 rods with ARP bolts and KB pistons. Engine made around 460hp & 450tq.

Can vary for different applications, but typically a cammed up hotrod better with manifold vacuum, mild shit go ported. Real rowdy shit just get rid of it. Most of my engines don't run it.
