I really like the new Priest album. Is it the best thing they've ever done ? No, it isn't. However, in my opinion it's a solid good. So a 7 outta 10. Let's face it . Priest is no longer in their prime. I don't think we are ever gonna get another British Steel or You've got another thing coming type album. So for this version of JP, I say it's good. Just my two cents worth. Frank, glad to see you back. 😎👍

Totally fair. I can't remember what I gave it... was it a 6.5? So, pretty close to your 7. Ultimately, any Priest is good Priest. For me, Firepower was an 8 or 8.5...

Great to have you back, Frank! Great vid. Re; the new Priest album. Whenever I get an album that proves to be disappointing at first I keep playing it and invariably after a few weeks or so it grows on me. The riffs, melodies, or vocals, that sounded so-so or samey at first start to assert their individuality. My practice of letting albums grow on me stemmed from not having much money for albums when I was growing up, so I wanted every investment in music to pay dividends.

I do agree the first few tracks are all out the gate and don't offer much variation until after the first 5 or 6 tracks. I didn't buy the Deluxe CD as I didn't feel it was value for the 3 extra tracks (£8.00 difference) I love the period 77-80 and have those albums.

I can't wait to read, or maybe listen to Geddy read his book. Would be maybe the 4th or 5th one on Rush I have read. Just finished Anthem by Martin Popoff, and would love to read the 2nd and 3rd book of the trilogy. Been a Rush fan since I was 2 or 3 years old when I first heard Closer To The Heart on the radio. A friend of mine played the new Priest album on a roadtrip we did a few weeks ago. I was quite impressed by it. I figured it would suck, as too many old bands just keep putting out bad stuff. But I enjoyed it enough to remind me of the lesson I learned when I saw Slayer open for Priest. Because I haven't listened to them in years, if not decades. That not hearing those songs in ever. Makes it more exciting to hear them again. Where Slayer just seemed boring as I listened to way too much at the time. Have fun in Toronto. Hope you can hit up a record store if you are close to one. I'm still spinning nothing but 45's. They are starting to pile up and probably got another 50 or 60 to get through. I know I will be hitting 1000 of them this year.

Geddy's book is definitely worth reading. I really respect the fact they mostly remained in Toronto, even after the fame (Neil left, but I understand why). I will arrive in TO this Sunday, and have a few hours to kill in the late afternoon. I hope to make it to Sonic Boom again, and I want to check out Play De Record. I've been to Boom a few times, but ever Play. Worth going? I don't really want to venture out of the downtown (I will be walking).

Re: Judas Priest. Of the three albums they've recorded with Ritchie, I rank Redeemer of Souls the highest, then Invincible Shield and Firepower being the weakest of the three. Although the production on Redeemer isn't quite as sharp as the other two, I think the songwriting is stronger - possibly because Glenn took a more significant role before his illness started to limit him? I live in Worcester UK (i.e. Worcestershire) and Glenn doesn't live far from here so I'm guessing he recorded his parts either in his home studio or possibly at The Old Smithy Studio (about 3 miles from where I sit typing this!) where JP recorded Angel of Retribution. Ian Hill said in a recent video interview that he recorded most of his bass for the album direct to a laptop in various hotel rooms on the band's last tour - conveniently under the auspices of Andy Sneap. I went to see JP a couple of weeks ago in Birmingham (supported by the excellent Saxon & Uriah Heep) and was blown away by just how good they still are live (41 years after I saw them first time around).

I'm with you on JP. I love their earlier stuff up to and including Screaming for Vengeance and saw them live a couple of times in 1981 and 88. I think it's the same with most hard rock / metal bands though. After all, there are only so many riffs to go round!! One exception IMO has been Uriah Heep's last 2 records. Easily as good as their classic work 🙂

I have a copy of Geddy's book sitting awaiting reading that my wife got me for Christmas. Your's is similar to some friends opinions, I can't wait to get into it. Also, I feel the Priest is bland and stock metal. I hate how predictable and safe metal in general is. Songs in the same key, over and over, kick drums that sound like someone is playing a typewriter, lyrics that avoid any personal connection at all. I'm not really into it and can't find one song that would fit into the early 80s era when they would be heavy but also write a catchy chorus. This is a Richie (who is excellent) solo album with Halford singing (who sounds great). Even the cover is pathetic and amateurish. I enjoy the Bruce Dickinson album way more. Love the mighty Cauldron "In Ruins" vinyl!!

I’ve been meaning to get the Geddy Lee book. I need to check it out and give it a read. In regards to the Judas Priest album. I like it but I feel the same way as you. It’s actually not just the Priest album, I find all modern metal albums have the same issue. Great production but the albums all sound the same as one another. It makes newer metal albums boring to listen to in my opinion. I find older metal albums were all different from one another and each album had a distinct sound. You hitting up any record stores in Toronto? I used to go to Sonic Boom a lot but their new location in Chinatown is terrible to find parking so I barely go anymore. Dead Dog Records is another good store you should check out, it’s not downtown though, it’s a little more north.

I have to respectfully disagree about Judas Priest. Firepower and Invincible Shield are a great one two punch (with a slight edge to the latter). It is insane that a "legacy" Metal Band is still putting out new material at this level (I'm sure Richie's new blood has a lot to do with it). Compare this to the last few Iron Maiden albums (which rate as passible to OK). The only other "legacy" Metal Band that even compares with new material is Anthrax.

I like Shield more than Firepower. Serpent and the King is my favorite track. Crown of Horns is my least favorite, skip it every time. The Lodger is a showtune written by Bob Halligan Jr. for a play he wrote based on Hitchcock's The Lodger, which explains its difference and weirdness. I've been spinning this album for a whole month now, and I quite like it. No, it's not vintage Priest, those days are gone. But I say it's the best they've done since Rob rejoined.

I had a subscription (dirt cheap, btw) for many years but, other than the yearly 'best of' issue, I would thumb through it and vow not to renew. Eventually I honored that vow. But, as with all things music related, if it scratches that itch, enjoy!
