    I've done further investigation, and would appreciate your thoughts! Thanks to Alan Toms for suggesting checking the wheel gauge! Back to back gauge difference between Hornby and Bachmann hall was minimal: Bachmann 0.1mm wider. I decided to measure distance between *outer flange surface* (much more important, as it ignores flange thickness) and found much greater difference. I also measured other Bachmann problem locos too, here are the results. Each result is an average taken from all three driven axles. Hornby vs Bachmann Hall: 15.36mm vs 15.93mm, Bachmann 0.57mm wider. Hornby K1 vs Bachmann K3: 15.30mm vs 16.26mm, Bachmann 0.96mm wider. Hornby 4P vs Bachmann STD4: 15.43mm vs 15.76mm, Bachmann 0.33mm wider. As you can see, Bachmann are gauged consistently wider than Hornby by an average of 0.62mm. My questions then: - Is this significant enough to contribute to the running issues? - What should the gauge be? (outer flanges, not back to back) - Is this difference typical across other models? If you can, send me your own data (as above) for comparable Hornby vs Bachmann models, and we can do some 'proper' research! I'll do some more measuring if I have time too!

    Hi Sam, What happens if/when you reduce the Bachmann outer flange width to the same as the Hornby? That should be simple enough for a mechanical genius such as yourself! There are several back-to-back brass OO gauges available to buy to set correct widths aren’t there. Regards, Jim

  • @SamsTrains

    @@jimross623 haha definitely not a genius Jim - messing with gauge scares me, that's for sure! We're talking a fraction of a mm ... too risky for me!! I don't think a back-to-back gauge would help much, because the thickness of the flanges could be different. Hoping someone can provide the answers!

    @Sam. You need to measure the Front to Back dimensions as shown on the DOGA website. It should be 15.2mm max. www.doubleogauge.com/standards/commercialwheels.htm Also the track gauge itself. www.doubleogauge.com/standards/commercialtrack.htm

    Really not surprised in the slightest that Oxford don't charge for weathering, if only manufacturers like Bachmann took a leaf out of their book.

    haha I know right - good old Oxford - just proves how little it must really cost! Bachmann are like that - they've even started charging more for the complex liveries (812) - not aware of any other manufacturer doing that either! But yeah, home weathering is usually best, particularly if the alternative costs you an extra £10!! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

    I have a Bachmann Hall and have had it since 2007 I think. It’s a been brilliant model, never gone wrong, work fine on all layouts I use it, it’s also had very little maintenance. And like all my mid 2000s Bachmann they do fine with being put in and out of there box with all detail still surviving (something I cant say about my Hornby models). I recommend trying the Bachmann 9F from the mind 2000s. Iv had mine pulling 66 wagons on lay out with gradients.

    The MainLine Railways Bachmann Manors are better than that. No-one likes to hear of preserved railways under lockdown being vandalised by thoughtless offenders. The Llangollen Railway has suffered severe vandalism in this second lockdown situation; carriage windows have been smashed, seats ripped up and empty alcohol bottles have been left as evidence. Without money to pay for repairs and possible replacements, it could be the end of the one railway I'm a member of. Please send a message to everyone about vandalism. It's upsetting me greatly. I may never get another ride behind my beloved Foxcote Manor again. Also, it might mean the end of my driving and firing sessions with 5 inch gauge engine Holy War. Sniff!

    We had worse at the Severn Valley Railway at Bewdley station yard as we had a visit off the ORR (office of road and rail) before lockdown, as someone fell from some scaffolding and injured themselves in a serious way. This has caused them to close the yard for all of the volunteer groups (apart from engine crews) until they employ a yard manager who has to make sure the yard is safe to work in. We get our lovely carriages occasionally vandalised as well if in the carriage works yard at Kidderminster by people who assume spray painting everything is fun.

    I gotta say, I got the modified Hall a couple of years ago and had the exact same issues. It was one of the newer versions of the model and there was no room to fit a decoder. In the end I had to use the bachmann decoder which plugs in but is wired to another plate (don't know the technical term haha) I removed the weight in front of the motor and place it in there, feeding the wires around the motor. Was a very tight fit. It does seem to be a recurring thing with Bachmann where they don't utilise the room in the tender. Not all locos granted but certainly most of them. But if I recall, I operated it on DC and the performance wasn't too bad.

    I have a bachmann split chassis modified hall. For some reason they made the piston guides out of plastic, so one snapped and I had to replace it. Also the body mounting screw part snapped so the body is loose. It doesnt have sprung buffers or a metal running plate, but it still has those large lamp brackets. I'm going to wire an 8 pin socket into the tender at some point to get it running on dcc, like I've done with my split chassis manor and J39 and others, but I think I'll do my B1 first.

    Hi Sam! I bought the more modern version a few months ago for an absolute bargain at £90, and you'll be glad to hear they have refined it. The lamp irons are much more realistic size, and the performance is far more realistic in terms of speed, and does a far better crawl. I haven't looked inside it so I can't comment on the motor type or the bearings, but there still isn't any tender pickups, so I'd imagine the decoder space is still under the cab or in the boiler. It also doesn't slow down on the corners like yours does. I haven't tested it on any hills, so again I can't comment

  • @SamsTrains

    @SamsTrains

    3 жыл бұрын

    Wow, for £90 it's way better! Interesting about the lamp irons - the photos on Rails of Sheffield still show them being huge! Great to hear yours runs better - let me know what the innards are like if you get chance to look! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

  • @Simon-Davis
    @Simon-Davis3 жыл бұрын

    I had the same model when they first came out, DCC fitting was actually straight forward, as you mentioned you can feed the wires up and over, either that or you could route the harness into the tender, which is how I did mine as well as sound fitting and extra pickups. It was the first model I ever did my own sound install with, and was really quite easy (Try DCC fitting the Ivatt 4MT...THAT was a real pig!). Dead right about the gearing though, it saps so much of the available torque from the motor and makes it less responsive for low speed running. I'd be interested to see what the back to backs are on that model, its almost as if its the wheel backs are interfering with the chassis block when it is on tight curves, so there is probably not enough sideplay somewhere; it was the Bachmann Std4 MTT which you had that did the same thing on curves.

  • @SamsTrains

    @SamsTrains

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks a lot for sharing - yes I'd opt for wiring it into the tender too... just a pity Bachmann didn't design it that way from the start! You're right about the 4MT - don't even get me started on that one, haha! Check out my pinned comment at the top - I've measured the gauging and posted the results! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

    Some bachmann models are good its just they have a few old clunkers that they still have in the range from 10 or more years ago that they tend to charge a high price for. I have 2 of the GWR Pannier tank locomotives and they are brilliant compared to the really old hornby open station cab model.

  • @SamsTrains

    @SamsTrains

    Yes that's true Ben - models from Bachmann designed in the last 4 years or so are much better (often not quite up to Hornby's standard), but worth buying for the right price overall! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

    I'd say that its a fair review for the model you picked up, Sam. I own Bachmann's Raveningham Hall in lined GWR livery (as it looked on the WSR) and the only issue I've had with it is one of the wheels slipped out of its gauging and caught the running gears. But thats once in 5 years and its been brilliant ever since. I'm not sure if its newer or older than yours, but my Hall is able to crawl brilliantly with no jerkiness and it pulls up to 10 coaches without any complaining. Hope you're keeping well and safe mate :)

    Re DCC fitting in the Bachmann Hall Class loco. There is a weight in Front of the motor sitting in a plastic thing, it is held in place by some black tape. If you remove the tape you can take the weight and the decoder fits into the plastic thing in place of the weight. There should also be ‘clips’ to route the decoder wires through and should keep the out of the way of the motor.

    The Saint and Hall class were the same size. The main differences were the Hall had smaller wheels and a cab with side windows. The DCC chip is supposed to replace the weight mounted in front of the motor (there are clips to hold the wiring in place). It’s not a great location, tricky to squeeze in and by removing the weight it doesn’t exactly improve the performance

  • @SamsTrains

    Nice to return after an absence, and see this helpful vid, Sam. I wasn't aware of Bachmann's not using proper bearings until I saw some of your previous videos. Their locos are usually so visually appealing, it's a shame about the apparent mechanism problems. I have a Bachmann Hall, purchased about 15 years ago, but never ran it much after the first brief (OK) test run so can't really assess its performance. I should give it a good workout with rolling stock and see. I thought Bachmann announced 2-3 years ago they would concentrate on quality in all future releases. Do you know if they have?

    Excellent review video of the Bachmann GWR Hall Class Sam 👍👍 Well excellent to your video, but not to this model as I can’t believe that it run fast & slow while on the move. And even it has great details, it is a bit outdated to not only the modern Bachmann Hall Class, but to the Hornby Hall Class as they have great details as well I like the driving wheels look so smooth with better axels than Bachmann. I know it late for to say about your latest Model Railway news and I’m sorry for me to comment, but I like to say that I like the 4-6-2 Pacific from Australia which is a Hornby product and that look excellent. I have a few of these. Agree the Hornby one is better but I did improve the performance of the bachmann version by removing the fitted DCC equipment and the resistor over the motor and wiring a decoder and keep alive in the tender. Some extra holes are required in the chasis and tender but the 3 halls I've done run really well configured that way. On the subject of weathering I always do my own even on weathered versions.

    Hi Sam, Looking at Britain's Model Trains 2020 (an annual compendium of all UK ready-to-run model railway items - from Model Rail magazine), I see that they gave the Hornby Hall 92% and the Bachmann Hall 88%. The latter is a higher score than I would expect going on your comments. The Bachmann one is a lot better than the 1966 Triang Hornby version I previously had! - it had the old XO4 motor and made an ozone smell when it ran.

  • @SamsTrains

    @SamsTrains

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks James, there's no doubt it's much better than the Tri-ang one, but 88% is far too generous in my opinion, as is often the case with magazine reviews. I can't blame the mags though - if they started criticising manufacturers heavily, they'd lose their free samples and probably lots of advertising money too... fortunately I don't have those worries, so I can be candid. It's paid off so far! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
