melopeak -I totally agree with you. There is no reason to say one of these giants is better than the other. Just listen. It's like comparing Pavarotti with Domingo with Corelli with Bjorling with Gigli with di Stefano with . ..well you know. I hope I didn't leave off anybody's favorite tenor.

Bach was a fan of Vivaldi and there is obvious influence by Vivaldi on the Brandenburg Concertos, but TMK Vivaldi apparently had little chance to hear Bach's music, mainly because of the Catholic/Protestant divide and the fact that Bach's music is mainly religious (Lutheran). Although Vivaldi was a Catholic priest, his music was composed mainly for the orphans at the orphanage he worked for, and when they grew up, many of the orphans were able to make a living as performers playing Vivaldi's music throughout Europe, which gave Bach a chance to hear it.

Thank you ! I love their music but didn't know they were contemporaneous. If I understood right, but why Bach could be a fan of Vivaldi and Vivaldi not know Bach ? If they were not of the same belief or church ? Just wondering not arguing and thank you again.

There was huge enmity between Catholics and Protestants in those days, the Catholic Church which had ruled Europe was losing its control after the Protestant Reformation because now it had competition, and rulers lined up with one or the other for political reasons as they fought wars with each other, and fired up their bases to hate each other and demonize each other, and they certainly would not play each other's music in their services. And not only was Bach's music mostly religious, but the whole Bach family for generations before and after JSB were involved with (Protestant) church music to the point where "Bach" was a colloquial term in Protestant Germany for any church composer. But Vivaldi's orphans traveled around Europe in small orchestras making a living playing concerts, and from them Bach was able to get copies of Vivaldi''s scores and study them, and he admired Vivaldi's work. If you compare the Brandenburg Concertos to most of Bach's music, the Brandenburgs show strong influence by Vivaldi.

If someone only knows Bach through the Brandenburgs and wants to know what I mean by saying that the Brandenburgs are obviously influenced by Vivaldi, you have to compare them to other music by Bach. Just do a search on "Bach cantatas," for example (of which he wrote hundreds) or the St Matthew or St John Passions or Mass in B Minor -- or some of his hundreds of organ works -- all of which are examples of what Bach sounds like when NOT influenced by Vivaldi. Then compare that to the Brandenburgs (which are about the most cheerful and lively things Bach ever wrote, Bach is normally very solemn and Vivaldi seems to have cheered him up a lot).
I always said this: "no matter what type or genre of music you are into, like or prefer, this music, I mean these pieces in this great selection is impossible not to love" I know very little about classical music, but gee, this is simply beautiful, hard to describe.

Please remember that Vivaldi came first and paved the way for Bach and many others. Some of Bachs work is based on Vivaldi whom he loved ........I adore both !!!

Oh please ... In no way did Vivaldi pave the way for the god of harmony that is Bach. Bach transcribed some of Vivaldi's pieces as he did with lots of other composers.

@@jaikee9477 Vivaldi brought to the table a rhythmic vivacity and harmonic clarity that Bach absorbed and added to the blend of French dance genres and ornamentation and German counterpoint in his summation of Baroque style. Without Vivaldi's influence, Bach's music might have much less impact than it does. Both were Icons My Friend.

Bach versus Vivaldi? No, Bach AND Vivaldi. The Red Priest taught Bach many things: Bach's violin concertos would be poorer if not for Vivaldi's characteristic openings and virtuoistic violin writing. Excellent soundtrack!

Bach, Vivaldi, Telemann and Händel. The finest of the baroque music, each of them is a great world class composer on its own, the rest is a question of taste or preferences. Thank you for sharing.

It is very possible that,via a mountain of the most brilliant composers of the baroque era , Vivaldi could have easily been the best composr ever ! But you have to listen to tons of his works too come to that conclusion,so I'm pro Vivaldi to the max ! However as a suffer of depression, I've found that via the music of both Bach and Vivaldi instantly puts me in a very nice place !

A day like today in 1741 Antonio Vivaldi died. The exact same day but in 1750 Johann Sebastian Bach died of an infection. The greatest geniuses of Barroque music died a day like today.

And someone else could say Bach has more depth or something else. As George said, it depends on the opinion of the listener, the good think is that each one has his unique style and personality, as for every musician and composer.

Grant Taylor: I concur. I use music as a study tool. Vivaldi puts me in the "zone" for those very reasons. Bach doesn't. I still enjoy Bach, especially the Brandenburg Concertos while walking in autumn or fishing.

Vivaldi fue mimado por la aristocracia y acostumbrado a los lujos , quizas por eso su musica es mas "optimista". En cambio Bach llevo una vida de mucho trabajo, preocupaciones, y problemas economicos. Pero no hubo otro músico en la historia superior a él.

Both are great ...they differ in nuances.... Whilst Vivaldi emphesises on melody and harmony , Bach was more "technical" without neglecting musical harmony .

In case anybody doesn't know, Bach was influenced deeply by Vivaldi. Though this influence occurred more than half way through Bach's life, it is apparent in the music Bach wrote after laying ears on Vivaldi's work. When I think of Bach's music I think of Bach pre-Vivaldi or post Vivaldi.

Not much can be compared to the likes of these two geniuses. And this was in the 1700 hundreds. Unbelievable!.
Classical legends, nothing can stop them when they are together.
