Bach - Cello Suite no. 1 in G major BWV 1007 - Swarts | Netherlands Bach Society

Музыка

*Rectification: the key in the title of this video is accidentally misspelled as 'C major' instead of 'G major'.
The six cello suites, of which Lucia Swarts plays the first here for All of Bach, have been handed down in a beautiful manuscript by Bach's wife Anna Magdalena, which raises many questions. Bach’s first cello suite became his most famous one. The cellist begins the well-known, comforting prelude in a gentle, radiant G major. The first bars are dominated by the single G, D and A strings, resulting in great resonance.
This recording was made in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. It is the most famous Dutch national museum dedicated to arts and history. The room in which this recording was made, was chosen according to paintings that fitted with the Cello Suite in G major.
Recorded on June 30th 2014 at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB or consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

I personally dont bother so much if it is period-representative instruments or newer instruments, I dont get the idea about this separation. What bothers me most is if this is a really good recording? And as NBS always delievers the best recordings, and the best interpretations, I am fully content.

I LOVED how she played the final note of the Prelude - I whispered "wow…" to myself when I heard it. She gave it four distinct moments of different timbres by making subtle changes to the bow's distance from the bridge, angle of attack, speed, and pressure. Those are the kinds of skills that elevate a great performance to a brilliant performance.

Ms. Swarts, you are an incredible musician and I am so happy I found you. This performance was absolutely brilliant... simple, clear, and completely natural from the heart. I must say, so close to my own style and interpretation, but I'm more than happy to admit that enjoyed it much more on your instrument! I don’t know if it is because of the baroque instrument and the way the piece is being played, and the serenity and clean sound she creates, but this is the first and only performance of this piece in which I can feel and hold images of nature, water, grass, trees, the forest, small animals, all of God’s creation untouched by humans from hearing the piece. It really connects us to nature and to God and brings peace.

The more I listen to this incredible performance, the more subtlety and depth I hear, yet the net effect is an absolute and simple clarity. The companion video with Lucia Swarts talking about the suite is also well worth watching. Musicians often have trouble putting their thoughts into words but Swarts gives an eloquent commentary, and what amounts to a master class for anyone working on this piece. I was interested that, although she speaks of her debt to her great teacher, the late Anner Bylsma, her approach to the bowings in the problematic Anna Magdalena Bach ms seems to me much less dogmatic and more flexible. Bylsma could certainly make the crazy bowings work, but she has apparently opted to base her performance on the older and perhaps more accurate Kellner ms.

It seems like eternity where one does no more feel any pain, any grief, any loss, any sadness, any trouble in this troublesome life. I watched her lost myself in her hands movements, in her facial expression as if every fibre in her soul, body & spirit is living the moment: here & now. I looked at her face, & I saw the beauty, I looked at her hands & I felt her healing something wounded in me. God knows how much I wish this lady who played the Cello tonight the most happy life free from sorrow & anxiety & to KZread thank you from the bottom of my heart. Fadia Sultan

The prelude of the piece is literally an introduction to the piece. The first sounds of the sixteenth notes repeated throughout the movement form a distinct line. As the composer does in his piano preludes, the level of technical skill increases towards the end of the movement, which is intended to open the hands and "warm up" in a sense. The Allemande is calm but gripping, with a structure appropriate to the character of the dance. The movement is sustained with sixteenth notes and breathes thanks to the eighth notes skillfully interspersed. Courante is again in the character of a dance. It creates a fast and joyful atmosphere. As in Allemande, the resting notes between passages that require technical skill are skillfully thought out. Sarabande consists of eight-measure phrases. Although the chords at the beginning evoke a polyphonic counterpoint, towards the end of the phrases, a plain and simple expression in which a single voice is heard dominates. Two menuets played one after the other drag us back into a typical dance atmosphere. The joy and sadness between the two menuet themes are skillfully observed. The last movement, the gigue, is a masterpiece, as in the composer's other suites. It ends the work with enthusiasm and joy.

I believe it is a combination of the cello itself, (which is what caught my attention and prompted me to listen) and the ambience of the concert hall. As a cellist, with a cello that is 195 years old, I recognize a quality of sound that is almost impossible to produce on the more modern instruments. Brava! I want to hear more! Marcia Crain, Ph.D.
