The hymnal known as the Schmelli Gesangbuch includes close to 900 hymns including 69 sacred pieces featuring a melody and a figured bass, but it's Bach's mournful music for solo voice and basso continuo, "Come Sweet Death" (Komm, süßer Tod, komm selige Ruh), which rises above the rest.
Unlike many of the arrangements and newly harmonized chorales, this five-verse song is thought to have been written from scratch for the songbook. Bach used lyrics by an unknown poet, written around 1724, asking death to come quickly and peacefully to deliver the singer to heaven, where he can see the face of Jesus.
There's something deeply moving about the single vocal line singing such poignant text, and it's been suggested this introspective piece is a reflection of the personal tragedies in Bach's life. Still, whatever the motivation for its composition, there's no doubt the music is some of Bach's most reflective and devotional songs.
Edwin London's "Bach (Again) - Come Sweet Death" is a very unique setting during which the choir signs as they sing. At one distinct point the individual chorus members all sign their parts at different speeds as they sign individually.

The average listener who's not a musician or vocalist really has no idea how incredible this piece truly is! Every single member of this choir must be performing at a soloist level in order to pull this off as cleanly And beautifully as it is in this performance. Notice how, in the third stanza, the conductor puts their arms down. This is because each vocalist is taking on the verse in their own tempo and length, so that we can hear harmonies and dissonance throughout until it resolves. Just magical! To me, that part has always made me feel as if each voice was a swirling soul leaving the earth and returning to the ether, perhaps they're swirling around the one who's calling for death to take them away. ❤

How interesting! It's as though Bach spilled his paints. What the really validity of this performance is remains to be seen, but I'm glad they did it.

Incredible! I can't imagine how each performer sang their part in the section with moving dissonance.

I absolutely loved hearing this performance. Then I was a young teenager I bought an LP of the Lord's Prayer by the Morman Tabernacle choir which is what I really wanted, but this piece was on that LP and I have always loved hearing Come Sweet Death ever since.
