    It is interesting to point that both the music and the lyrics are credited to RYU-METAL (Ryuji Yokoi), someone who has been working for BABYMETAL since the beginning (Uki Uki Midnight, Onedari Daisakusen, Meta Taro, Elevator Girl, BBAB, Oh Majinai). It is strange that someone who has written some of the most lighter lyrics of the band comes up with this one. But for Mirror Mirror two lyricists are credited. For the first time someone called The Other Metal is there. We do not know who this person is, but it seems a pretty uncommon nickname on how they credit their collaborators. To me it feels pretty mysterious.

    I saw that Macbeth lines, Shakespeare went right in my mind and then i thought you would be the perfect one to analyze this part. This track with the proggy vibes heavy breakdown and existential questions is getting a lot of attraction, hopefully this will fill the thirsty for heaviness in the new BM album. Thanks for sharing this Andrew.🦊🤘🪞

    Thank you again, Professor with your in depth analysis about the cauldron. I am so glad you “trained for his your whole life!” I was not able to spot the connection between images of the red “gates” and Fushimi Shrine, even though I am Japanese and had been there! - wonderful. Allow me to talk about my personal experience with a mirror: Ever since I was a child, I would often talk to myself in the mirror, who somehow seems to be remote from myself (as if talking to another person) and often have talked myself into a rational conclusion. Now I may have longer chats on a wider topic and not just about myself. … oh and the music! I got my CD and listened to it a couple of times. Who says BM songs are not “METAL” enough!

    Amazing discourse Professor. Babymetal does tend to pack a lot into these 4 minute morsels. I like that this song has so much duality (not the least being the English/Japanese divide... and how good is Su's pronunciation? Rs and Ls with no difficulties at all). Can't wait to listen to the entire album. (Soon).

    ⚡ 💕 / 🪞 The stars really aligned for this review. I don't have much to add, other than to quote Su from the funnytoss translation of PMC vol.27: "It sounds poppy at first, but it’s also somewhat distorted. The rhythm of the odd time signature is what creates that sensation. The lyrics explore the theme of whether or not the person you see in the mirror is your true self. On first listen, it sounds like a bright world, but in fact, you’ll find it seems slightly twisted. It’s half in Japanese and half in English, and using two languages helps express the duality of human nature. It’s quite interesting because we’ve never tried to use the two languages in this way before. I also like MOAMETAL’s part in the bridge (laughs)."

    Greatest analysis, Professor-METAL!!

If the purpose of The One was the reinstatement of heavy metal to make us happy by recovering our losing humanity, the mission seems to have been almost already fullfilled. Although the girls can make self reference to perform these songs to achieve the *feel* they want to convey, but Babymetal isn't about their self-reference, yeah I think Su made it clear in this interview about Divine Attack: “It’s time to go your way” is an interesting line from the song. I imagined it could have been “go our way” instead, meaning everyone would go together. What was your thought process here? SU-METAL: It’s true that the theme of the song is to “lead the way and bring everyone with us as we move forward”. I considered if it was better to use “we”, but then I thought, “that’s their decision to make”. BABYMETAL fans have their own opinions about our songs, and might like this song but dislike that one. There’s no need to force them to agree with everything BABYMETAL does. So I think it’s okay to have songs you like and dislike on this album as well. In other words, if fans continue to follow us from now on, I want it to be an active decision of free will on their part, and not just because they happened to be there. Also, I wanted to find words that could let someone listening to the song feel inspired to never give up, and to open their own path forward. I want words that will stand by such a person. It’s true that the atmosphere of the song says “Let’s go together”, but it also respects individual choice.

    Since Babymetal allowing such a broad interpretation - I want to asume that they wrote the english Shakespare bits in as a nod to you. After analysing and also translating (almost) all of their songs from japanese culture to the clueless (new) fan base arising out from the pandemic in the last three years since November 2020, while declaring all you actually can do is explaining what some guy wrote centuries ago and writing books yourself. As for myself, without having time all of a sudden in 2020, I doupt I would have stumbled across Babymetal again after hearing them at Fine brothers a decade ago, but moved on with my own life. And now, fingers crossed and kitsune's up, I will see them for my first time in May. :)

    I think the few songs that can be interpreted as 'about', say, Yui or Mikio were definitely not written with them specifically in mind, they just happened to serve double duty. Maybe they were pulled out and refined because they suited that moment in time. Perhaps they have a special, *additional* layer of personal meaning for those involved, or the circumstances colored some aspects of performance during that period, but I don't think any BabyMetal songs are purely or intentionally self-referential. I mean, BabyMetal is exceedingly self aware. They are conscious of the possible/probable inference, but that's not Why They Wrote It. Any applicability is incidental. Like you said, the messages are intentionally ambiguous and designed to have a broad interpretation because BabyMetal is so fan focused. They are a very polished and intricate entity with an extremely intentional presentation, but there's so little ego involved. Nothing about BabyMetal is 'about' them. Everything is about the fans. There's so much consideration, even in stage design, given to reaching as many fans as intimately as possible. You can't do that if your lyrics have too specific a meaning. The ambiguity is a gift. Let this touch you in whichever way fits you best. You, the fan, give the song its ultimate meaning. Anyway. End ramble. XD Thanks for this. I was curious about these lyrics, especially the quiet bits. Looking forward to the next. 🤘🦊🤘 (Also, we're here for content not production value. :p This is fine. Though the jaunty music in the others *was* fun. XD)

    It's interesting to note that these girls have deeply resonated with our lives in an existential way. They help us dive into our childhood, our adolescence. They are young. I am old. They help me face life as a grand journey. In the video, the perspective view with a bird flying towards infinity is very eloquent to me, even as I begin to perceive the onset of the finitude of physical life in my case. If I had the opportunity to meet them, I would like to thank them for clarifying that life is a mystery and a discovery with curiosity, solitude, joy, fear, and pleasure in all phases of our journey. The Other is our mirror. The delicacy, sensitivity, and wild youth and existentialism of Babymetal have helped me reflect on this.

    Professor, as soon as I heard the lyrics to this song, I knew you would be on to this like a Seagull on to a chip. You have given us a really delicious and intelligent dissection of a tremendously complex, yet superficially simple, lyric. A lot of your comments resonated with my viewing of the song; however, your descriptive interpretation elevated my understanding to another level. As far as a concept album is concerned, I feel there is still a strong link here. Babymetal are discovering 10 alternate dimensions. This is another of them. So far, all the dimensions/alternate realities/parallel worlds that Babymetal has presented to us are mired in conflict of some kind. This is no different. The conflict here seems to be more on a personal level, where residents of the new world are faced with the challenge of their perception of self-image and the possibly of imitation. Yes, this could be a song of internalization and self-reflection. A world within your own head, so to speak. I am fully on board with your thoughts on the song (complete, with the interpretation of the video footage as well). I take your point that Babymetal might be introducing us to a world where people are questioning the reality of who they are, even questioning something as simple as an image of themselves in the mirror. If I may take this concept a step further, perhaps the new world may be troubled by machine learning and AI imagery, to a point where you begin to question if you actually are the real version of the reflection, or just a cognitive reflected version of the original person. Professor, I love your work, keep the good stuff coming.

  • @AndrewHartley

    @AndrewHartley

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks, man. I agree with your sense of the conflict being a focus of all the songs so far. I wonder though if we would think of it as a concept album if we hadn't been told it was one? The songs seem thematically related but tightly enough to be considered a concept (rather than just, say, an album)? I'm not sure. I'll have to think more about the AI and machine learning stuff. That could go in a very different, but interesting direction, and I can see the validity of that reading. Thanks!

  • @lencooke944

    @lencooke944

    @@AndrewHartley Agreed, I feel you have to look for the concept in this album. I think that with Metal Kingdom, Divine Attack and Monochrome that the concept of conflict is much easier to see. With Light and Darkness and Mirror Mirror you have to expand your concept of conflict. The last two songs give me a feeling of a more personalized basis of conflict, rather than a more global level of MK, DA and M. Almost a war within yourself. The AI and machine learning vibe comes to me from the overall feel of the video, but especially from the effects applied to the vocals. They seem to be computer driven, or even robotic. I don't know, it just struck me as being a point of irritation for residents of a world if they were confronted by artificial versions of themselves.

  • @lencooke944

    At the risk of flogging a dead horse, I am increasing my confidence that there is an AI or Machine Learning element to this song. Professor, you rightly gave a lot of attention to the video in your analysis, so I want to draw your attention back to this. Did you know that this video was built frame by frame (obviously) with very few frames being replicated? The quirkiness of this video made one curious reactor go through this video frame by frame, and he found many images almost hidden inside the video. The whole F x F video runs for over 40 minutes, so I don't expect you to watch the whole thing, but if I can draw your attention to a short section of the video; from 35:49 to 37:24 (this accounts for about six seconds play time at normal speed in the original video (2:51 to 2:57). Link to Wave Potter's frame by frame video for Mirror Mirror (if anyone has time, take a look at the whole video, it's fascinating): kzread.info/dash/bejne/jH6htcupmtaudrg.html At the above time stamps we begin by seeing two robed and hooded figures with mirrors for faces. These figures are standing in front of a red background with a black splodge in the middle of the frame. Written on this background are changing forms of computer coding and various words (probably still representing coding). At 35:53, we can clearly see that the coding is split down the middle and presented in mirror image. We then see the coding fade into the background and the focus resumes on the robed figures with mirror faces. We then get the words (lyrics) on our screen "Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble" (perhaps to portray a sense of witchcraft or sorcery?) and then we see an image of Su flash onto our screen, quickly followed by a fast flash of an image of Moa, all with the computer coding muted in the background. As the next frames move by, the computer coding becomes more prominent again and we can clearly see the words "I need" heavily repeated (still representing coding); and then the word "ALERT" is the only coding word repeated over and over again, as if the computer code is issuing us a warning. We then get to see the lyric words "Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble" set to diminishing images of the coding in the background, a Dark Robed hooded figure and then a black square that morphs into a star, which then turns into a shape resembling a pentagram; all with blurred computer code in the background. So, what does all this mean, I have no idea, but the video production team have gone to a hell of a lot of effort to put all that in there for six seconds of a lyric video, so it has to mean something. I am open to suggestions.

  • @AndrewHartley

    @@lencooke944 That's interesting, and I think the framing rhetoric about the album's participation in an alternate reality and the 'metalverse' supports a sense that the digital is supposed to be some kind of alternate reality. That said, and as you say, I'm finally not sure what to do with that, and I'm concerned that such a reading relies so heavily on the visuals. For me, as you know, lyrics and music have to be the bed rock of a song's meaning because they should be able to communicate effectively by themselves (and without any specialist/insider knowledge about the band, what they've said about the song etc.). If the song itself can't articulate its ideas clearly, that's a failing of the song. Of course, the proviso is the idea that the song is supposed to be semantically incomplete and that the audience is supposed to complete the circle of meaning in ways which must necessarily be idiosyncratic. So yes, all grist for the analytical mill :)

    Fascinating analysis. And, as usual, my disjointed thoughts at the end. Any idea what the statue was opposite the Pietà in the background of the long hall scene? Ah, well, least important detail. Reading the Billboard interview it strikes me things came real close to not having a return at all. And I was not so far off in thinking Su- was done with Su-metal following 10 Babymetal Budokan. And this ties in with your referencing Babymetal as theater or pageantry. In the same interview Su-metal said: "Babymetal is fiction, but it's also something that's happening simultaneously in reality." But, Nakamoto san has decided to reprise the role. And I believe I am happier with that than a cover by her of Girl from Ipanema despite a bit of wistfulness. And speaking of Wyrd Sisters... They are a really good musical group out of Canada. Love their album Raw Voice and especially the title track.

    It seems like this clearly pairs up with Maya, (illusion in Buddhist tradition, maybe Hindu as well) - navigating what the true self is when reflections lie and the world is an illusion is a really interesting thematic element, but I haven't gotten deep enough yet into the other songs to see the broader theme. Thank you for this breakdown, Professor.

    Professor AJ. Thank you for your excellent commentary. The time has finally come. BABYMETAL quoted Shakespeare when expressing it in the lyrics. While many English speakers reacted that the lyrics were incomprehensible, AJ understood the Macbeth quote on the first try. Professor AJ is the real deal. A question arises here. Were Macbeth's quotes effective in describing BABYMETAL as "jumping over even themselves"? I have not been able to ascertain whether Macbeth's citations play a very important role in expressing the destructuring and Zen-inspired ideas that AJ points to within my comprehension. I am very excited to announce that the MV will be released tomorrow.

    It's really interesting. I hadn't thought about it, but Macbeth contains the following key line when Macbeth has decided NOT to kill his king (his mind is later changed in conversation with Lady Macbeth): "I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition which o'er leaps itself and falls on the other [side]" It actually fits the song REALLY well and makes me wonder if that line was in the song writer's mind for the part about getting over yourself. Thank you for prompting this thought!

    I think Koba trolled us again with the whole planets/dimensions thing. Yes BABYMETAL songs are always very much open to different interpretations, have many different references that can open many doors, but overall this album is more about themselves than anything else, literally starting from the beginning, them entering the Metal Kingdom, this is really their point of view about the long journey that brought them to the present. Mirror Mirrror is quite explicit about that, Believing even more, but overall every single song is a step on that long path. At least thats how I read it after listening this album for a while 😅. 🤘🦊⚡️

    Oh, that's a timely analysis, great :-) I have to say that I'm not a huge fan of the heavy parts of this song and overall it's too busy to be a track I'll return to many times on it's own (only in the album context). But I LOVE the first singing part with "Mirror mirror...", with the fast paced drums. Some parts of the song are amazingly haunting. (And some are a bit annoying... but maybe I'll get used to them in the future 🙂)
