Andrew Hartley

Andrew Hartley

Welcome to my KZread channel! I'm Andrew, better known as AJ, Hartley. I'm a novelist (International, award winning and New York Times bestselling, for what any of that is worth) and a Shakespeare professor at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, where (though my Ph.D. is in literature) I mostly work on performance issues. I post about writing, travel, and one of my other passions, the Japanese Kawaii rock band, BabyMetal, though I do analytical discussions of the songs rather than straight reactions. As an artist, scholar, and cultural critic, my interests often overlap, so you may get bits of everything in a single video. Though I realize that I am, as they say, not for all markets, I hope you find bits of what I do entertaining or interesting.

It's a good walk up to the temple. Sei Shonagon famously wrote in "Pillow Book" on the pilgrimage path: 近うて遠きものくらまのつづらおりといふ道. So close yet so far. As was usual with her, multiple meanings folded up in a terse line.

DUDE! 😲 WOW!! I think this is the ONLY video interview with Money Mark in regards to working with ATARASHII GAKKO?? I mean, 88 Rising didn't even present an interview with Money after the success of Pineapple Kryptonite. Good questions that totally got him to open up & reveal some great details. What an opportunity to work with a talented & smart group of women that were right at that "transition" point of their entertainment career, and of their very lives. Man. This was totally Awesome. So great you got this opportunity to interview Money Mark. Nicely done AJ. Nicely done. 🤘

I don't know how I've been subbed and watched so many of your videos for years now AJ and didn't know until today that you had written (now) 3 books with Tom Delonge, whom I've always sort of loosely followed both for his Blink 182 career (I was a teen when their music videos were all the rage on MTV) and his UFO/UAP passion. Mind is kind of blown ngl. Those are two worlds I had never even imagined could co-exist for almost 10 years now and I had no idea :D. For me Prof AJ Hartley was my go-to when I wanted a deep dive into BABYMETAL lyrics with a smile on the face during a reaction. If you'll remember, I was in your "Thank You BABYMETAL" hiatus video as well. Ah well, enjoyed this interview, might look into these books then! Take care Prof ;)

You might have specifically mentioned the hawk whistle/ magpie sequence - I thought you would when describing the underlying philosophy of the protagonists. It looks so beautiful and peaceful. Recently I visited the Japanese gardens in Cowra, NSW, Australia. These gardens are widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Edo period designed gardens outside of Japan. Nearby, there is the only official Japanese war cemetery outside of Japan, where almost 300 Japanese soldiers are laid to rest, most of these men perished in a failed mass escape from the POW camp that was located in Cowra.

@@lencooke944 Up to you. They are quite different in tone and setting, but have some overlapping concerns. CATHEDRALS is sci-fi with a psychological suspense tone sometimes close to horror. There are 2 with a 3rd to come. STEEPLEJACK is technically fantasy but reads like alternate history set in a world that looks like a Victorian metropolis in South Africa. It's more mystery and adventure. There are 3 and a short story.

Did you say "northwest"? You're in northeast Kyoto. (Just noticed you corrected that.) Behind you is a depiction of Bodhidharma-known as "Bodai Daruma" or "Daruma Daishi" or simply "Daruma" in Japan. Maybe best known to Westerners in the Daruma Doll form. He is credited with bringing Chan Buddhism to China. Japanese Zen is derived from Chan Buddhism, and Enkō-ji is a temple of Rinzai Zen.
