Regarding the dancing: I have always been a metalhead, and we tend not be into that. But BABYMETAL have taught me that it can be very entertaining. I think it adds a lot to the entertainment value. Yes, there may be Xs on the floor to indicate their position, but it's not like they are glued to those spots. It's quite the opposite, they are traveling across the stage more than most bands. You say they trade their freedom of movement for it. But what do most bands do with that freedom? 90% of musicians (especially in Metal) are standing there barely moving anything but their heads. We are not losing anything. The way I see it, the dancing is an additional element of entertainment that we get on top of everything else. At least as long as other elements like the vocals don't suffer from it, and that's certainly the case here (contrary to many dancing Pop acts).

You’ve said everything I wanted to say. Having recently experienced a BabyMetal show, I can categorically say that the choreography added more to the experience than I would have expected. Despite the band going off and Su singing her heart out, your eyes are drawn to Moa and Momo the entire show. It’s unique for this genre and they do it so well. As you said, most bands don’t do that much on stage and now that I’ve seen BM in person, I fear that every other show is going to pale in comparison.

Glad you mentioned Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin - two of my all time favourite bands, musically you still won't find any better, their (and a couple of my other old favourites') CDs were on repeat in my car for at least ten years - there was nothing more recent that appealed more to me. I replaced those CDs with BABYMETAL. Choreographed dance has never done anything for me either, I have no interest in the Britney Spears, Madonna and virtually every other pop act choreo which is mainly used to fill the stage with half naked girls (and boys) aimlessly and pointlessly mincing around, using the same dance moves as each other, all taken from the grab bag of contemporary dance, to give you something to watch that might take your mind off whatever similar sounding songs they are performing. Then I saw BABYMETAL and their choreo is completely different - no exposed skin, no grabbing crotches, no slut drops or wide spread legs, no suggestive dance moves. BABYMETAL's choreo was interesting - and I didn't know how or why it was so fascinating, what was so different about it. I only found out later that it actually serves at least a couple of real purposes. It is bespoke for each song, it doesn't just take dance moves from the grab bag of dance to follow a beat, it helps with interpreting each song or relates to a specific lyric, but in the majority of songs it is also specifically aimed at involving the crowd, to let them know when to jump, shout, pump their fists and to become part of the performance ... it raises the level of their live shows right up among the very best. I saw Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Queen with Freddie Mercury, Van Halen when they first made it big, Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax (they were great fun), many other big name bands and so many more of the recognised great live bands in their prime as well as so many less well known, but incredibly good live bands, some of them multiple times. When I saw BABYMETAL live for the first time their show was right up among them - when I saw them again they took it to another level altogether. For me it was the most entertaining concert I ever had the pleasure to witness and the one I enjoyed more than any other I'd been to. As I said before, choreographed dance never did anything for me at all - now I see other bands who I really like and something is missing, so many of them could be improved by adding that choreographed dance element - if only they could do it like BABYMETAL .... its all very well those bands maybe running round the stage in supposed chaos (funny how they always seem to run to the same places at the same times whenever they play that one song and doing their synchronised headbanging at the same point in other songs - maybe they don't have marks on the stage, it is still choreographed), but that gets a bit same-y after a while and it also occurred to me that mosh pits probably first happened because the crowd found the need to entertain themselves since, even though the music was good, there was nothing much worth watching happening on stage.

Considering that like 99,99% of metalbands are what you would prefer. Guys just going on stage and playing instruments without that much of a though about where they should stand or move. I would say BABYMETAL is a breath of fresh air and I am glad that they were brave enough to try to do things differently.

This is a big part of why Babymetal is so awesome. The entire show is choreographed, in Drop E, and yet it's basically "What if Taylor Swift was in Drop E? And had double bass?" You can tell who gatekeepers are by just looking for people who hate on Babymetal. It fucking rules, is amazing live, but dudes who would rather just see a bunch of dudes stand there and scream into a microphone try to say it's not metal. I absolutely love them, it's just such an amazing show.

When I saw The Ramones the guitar and bass player hopped up on the speaker stack and stood there the whole show. Rush spent more time playing than running around and it was a great show. Nemophila was more traditional with each person usually tied to their location. I just saw Babymetal and enjoyed a totally different atmosphere with them dancing and the crowd interaction. Why is one better, or why do we only have to like or favor one type of concert? Variety is great, enjoy! Peace.

It's worth pointing out this was an arena show filmed for a Pro-Shot Blu-ray. They actually used all three stages you see on screen. If you watch fancams from their current tour, while the actual songs are choreographed. The three members use all of the stage to interact with fans both during and between songs. The Kami band also have their own solos and interactions with the crowd.

I want bands to do whatever the hell they want to do. Xs on a stage are the last thing I worry about. Just watch the show and listen to the music. If you like what you see and hear, that's great. If not, that's cool too. I will never understand why people search around for things to complain about. Of course, I was like that too once. Then I discovered Babyetal and realized all that was nonsense. :)

Welcome back to BabyMetal's metalverse 🦊🤘🌐 It's been a while. Yup, that is Anthony Barone still playing during recent BMTH festival held in Japan as well with the rest of West Kami Band, once again my suggestion to enjoy the Eastern Kami Band and early era songs and see something different is "Rondo Of Nightmare" with Mischiefs Of Metal Gods Intro live at Budokan 2014. This song belongs to latest album The Other One but it wasn't part of the 5 singles prior to the album release in March, although it becomes one of fans favorite from this album real fast. The nasty riffs reminds to "Ice Nine Kills - Rainy Day". Maya in Hindu myth is the representation of illusion (which is the theme in this song), so that's the reference. Here's some official info: MAYA (ILLUSION) _Reality is an illusion. The truth may be a deception._ _It is a feeling as if you wandered in between the Real World and the Virtual World. It may be magic, or it may be an illusion._ The Western Kami Band playing this live at PIA Arena MM (April 1st) gives some aggressive flavor that i really like and with MomoMetal now officially as a new member, just so you know this was performed during Black Night (that's why they're wearing the old battle dress from Metal Galaxy era and she ain't got a mic), at the end of this night she was announced as MomoMetal, the night after this (Clear Night) they're wearing the new costume you can see at Mirror Mirror, METALIZM official MV and more recently Divine Attack - Shingeki live version. So the clip was released a couple of weeks ago to promote the DVD/BD but the live clip is from April, so not so new. They've been rotating this song along with Mirror Mirror and Believing during The Babyklok Tour in the US. Hope to see you coming back soon to enjoy more BM songs and hear your in depth analysis. Btw i like Pink Floyd and other rock and metal bands with not so organic stage presence, but i also like to see something different and the dance on this is just part of the things they do as a way to express and show something different, if they're not organized accidents could happen and we saw that happening before, so the X is needed especially for dancers like them, you don't see that when you go to the concerts so there's not so much to worry, but they also like to do crowd interaction and stepping out from the scripted choreo (not on this song oc) so they got a good mix on stage so you won't be boring at all. See you next time 🦊🤘🔥

Thanks for this reaction, I think you are starting to understand Babymetal, but it's a bit deeper than that as well. For example Babymetal exists in part to be a gateway band for those outside of metal. Babymetal was exists because the producer who used to work with bands (the band culture you talked about) was asked to work at the kids department (and work with Japanese idols, who do the choreographed dancing and singing) because rock/metal became less mainstream. Funny how you mentioned Pink Floyd, their big stage shows are very much choreographed (to fit the lighting, etc.), David Gilmour stands at the same place on the stage every show, they are much closer to a Rammstein show, who, as Su-metal of Babymetal said who watched Rammstein perform, are even more time-sentively choreographed, because they work with fire. If they stand in the wrong place at the wrong time, bad things happen ! (also almost happend with Moametal of Babymetal at Budokan 2021) Even something like Guns N Roses, Axel would put one leg up on the monitor at the same time in the same song almost every show. Even Cannibal Corpse's George Fisher always headbangs the same way at the same moment in the same song. And their audience expects it to happen as well. It's part of their live show and I'm certain also what they enjoy to do it for their audience. The choreography of Babymetal at such a big show and this album does not really show off the second reason for the 3 front ladies and the choreography. The choregraphy's second function is: audience participation. Cheerleading is maybe a strange word to use, but they 2 of them are literally leading the cheers. Please react to: Babymetal Headbanger at Legend 1997 (Legend 1997 is the name of the show) notice how Yuimetal and Moametal on the sides jump to make the audience jump, etc. I do think this song/performance/video you reacted to, as mentioned, isn't a great one, because of the type of show and how the live band is so little in focus. And when it comes to Babymetal, probably not the most complicated song when it comes to drums. Steve Hughes who is an Australia-born metal drummer (Primordial and Mortal Sin), but also a comedian said: Enya is metal, because if you listen to Slayer for 8 hours a day you need to relax a bit in the afternoon. I guess Babymetal just combines the 2 :-) "if you can sing it, you can play it" it's interesting because that's how Babymetal does dancing, the dancing is based on the lyrics, in some sense a sort of interpretive dance. Their moves correspond with the lyrics so when lyrics repeat (like a chorus) so do the dance moves. They also use that for the audience participation. PS I think you didn't critique Babymetal in a bad way and I don't critique in a bad way, I hope that's clear. Only critique I do have, but it's constructive criticism, please fix your audio levels you are hard to hear at moments like 5:37 you aren't speaking over the music.

There are T's and X's everywhere on every stage EVERYwhere, even with the biggest bands, even with the guys you mentioned. It's just hidden because you don't usually get top-down images. I can tell you 100% most shows are more choreo'ed than you think. Be a part of a show and I can promise you there's a mark for everyone. If a guitar's hooked up to an amp, for example, there's only a set range it can move. That guitar can move within that circle or arc. That's set design; where are you gonna put that amp and where is that guitarist going to go. It's a HUGE part of staging a show.

Praising the consistency of the drums while crapping on the consistency of the choreo. I was there…. I have evolved into appreciating the dedication it takes to accomplish both. The band here is the, ‘western Kami-band’ that as of the past couple yrs become the only band playing live with Babymetal. Members of the ‘eastern Kami-band’ played exclusively with Babymetal for their first 8-9 yrs have said of their time accompanying Babymetal that they had to step up their playing to match the energy and professional performance of the girls.

you won't be able to know if you don't see it directly in front of the stage. I have felt it myself and it is almost impossible to combine elements of pop music with elements of heavy metal along with the choreography. and boom, they succeeded, they succeeded in creating several new music genres, namely kawaii metal (cute metal) and experimental metal. I used to think like you. but I try to understand the music from the arrangement, lyrics, vocals, notes and dance. so it moved me to see it in person. Of the several kawaii metal groups that I've heard, only Babymetal has a balance with arrangements that have complementary harmonies.

As someone who used to be a metal snob, I always find the debate about what Babymetal is to be amusing. Having been both a metalhead and a massive Babymetal fan, I've come to terms with the fact that Babymetal is something different from any other other act in the heavy music space, so they don't follow the typical norms and conventions of the metal genre. Babymetal was born from the idol music scene, and their approach to metal is informed by that background and sensibility. Babymetal fans often think of Babymetal less as a band and more as a theatrical musical production; I often describe what they do as "metal show as performance art". Babymetal is the culmination the efforts of a whole team of people from the songs writers, to the producer, to the choreographer, to the costume designer, to the video artists, to the hair and makeup artists, and finally to the musicians and the girls themselves. Babymetal often refer to the group of people that create Babymetal performances as "Team Babymetal", which encompasses all the support staff that make it possible; when you go to a Babymetal live show, you will often see people wearing t-shirts that say "Fox God Crew", and they are the technical crew that make Babymetal shows possible. Because Babymetal is the work of a large team and represents the combined creative input of many people, and because their stage performances are so elaborate, I think that it is closer to a musical theater production than a normal rock/metal gig. Ordinarily I'm not interested in choreography, but for some reason, I couldn't imagine Babymetal without the dancing. It's just an integral part of what they do. Yes, it's very different from what I'm normally into, but it just works for them and it's part of what makes them unique.

Your willingness to "swim with the sharks" is admirable. I've never had any problems with any fan base when i had inquiries about their band. It's only when i started "straying from the Reservation" that I was "escorted" from the thread .Even with the artists i admire the most, there are a percentage of fans that have a zero percent tolerance for dissent . Normally Asian idol groups are pop music, so it's great to see one with metal, but although the band has their solos in concerts and always plays live, the focus of attention will always be the members of Babymetal. But it's okay if this is not your thing, for me as I'm a fan of metal and jpop/kpop, Babymetal is the perfect combination, but it's okay if it's not for you. The Kami band set-up, except certain ocassions, is one lead, right of the bass on stage right and secnd lead next to the performers and drummer on stage left. Remember they are session players, BABYMETAL are the three ladies. Changing the title to "Maya - Drummer Reacts to BM's drummer" would make it clearer. IMO what upsets and confuses most of the fans is making a few trival comments about everything else. Beaing your stage marking comments to death, a realtive was a roadie for many famous bands confimed every stage is mapped out and marked. They need markings indicating equipment placement, effects, lighting and performers reference points.
