'Babylon Berlin': Germany's $40 Million TV Show Comes to Netflix

Ойын-сауық

“Babylon Berlin” is a detective thriller set in Weimar-era Berlin that depicts the political conditions that led to the rise of the Nazis. But why set a thriller in the Weimar-era and is it a realistic depiction? Mark Kelly reports. Image: Netflix

This series is amazing. Hands down probably one of my favorite shows ever. Consistently good characters and story with the most alluring cinematography that at certain points is reminiscent of German Expressionism. I just adore everything about it from the old timey transitions at the beginning of each episode to the cooky dance number. ABSOLUTE LOVE

@@bingobongo1615 -- it's based on a crime novel which, too, only uses the detective story to paint a historical picture. So I'm not sure, but maybe this is what came about as "confused" to you, when all I saw was a beautiful and often disturbing image of a society 100 years ago, on the brink of something way more disturbing.

Well, it is probable the first show showing German TV CAN be good. It is absolutely stinks normally. Their shows are the worst B-shows ever. Tiny countries like Denmark or Austria produce way more high quality TV shows than Germany does, though Germany is 10 to 16 times bigger.

I've been studying the German component of WW2 for over two decades and I've always said that the period cannot be examined in a vacuum. You must understand the prior history, the culture, and the entities involved - large and small. I applaud the producers of this for depicting even the "antagonist" elements even as human which most forms of media would write off as thoughtless archetypical caricature. If they make a second season, I hope they maintain that humanism despite modern sensitivity towards the matter.

what exactly do you mean by "the 'antagonist' elements" and "thoughtless archetypical caricature"? I'm not through the entire series yet, so not sure if I got what you meant. But generally speaking; if the public broadcasters are involved (and/or some of the societies / institutions subsidising film) the general aim and mindset is to stick to realism and correct depiction of the god and the bad, the pretty and the ugly (with more series like that I might not even be mad at the whole GEZ thing anymore) and to 'get things right'. I'm even inclined to say not including something because it is considered a "sensitive topic" is a very American thing to do (or at least not a very German one)

Amazing production values, those $40 Million were well spent plus the cast was excellent as well. The fact that the twist plots at the end are so fresh is a great example of the storytelling. The fact that characters pay a heavy price along the story and seem well depicted is important.

As a Berliner, I find the Berliner Accent extra charming, of course. Especially the way Liv Lisa Fries (Charlotte Ritter) speaks, is music to my Berlin ears. It was clear to me that she grew up in Berlin just from hearing her talk in the series. But I totally get that it is difficult to understand if German is not your first language or even if you are German but not from Berlin it might be a bit difficult to understand at times. Even more so since they use some old-fashioned expressions from the 20s.

In both times the state was deeply in debt. Earlier the reparations payments for the first world war. Today the debt we have thanks to the euro currency. It is not the debts of the citizens, at no time, but the debts of the state. If we finally had a proper democracy, then there would be no euro and another EU. Too often, politics in Germany does the opposite of what citizens want - in both times, people longed for a political alternative. the people want peace, the eu wants war. In times when diversity is preached, everything is made the same. In times when equality is preached, there is diversity.

My grandfather supported the Nazis in the beginning, because he was like many others, hoping for economic change. Later, when he realized what the Nazis were about, he got into trouble with the Nazi party and spent 6 months in a KZ where he got TBC of which he would die years later. My point is, while not all Germans were in the resistance, at the same time, not all Germans were Nazis either. History is way more complex.

As a religious and political conservative, I have realised that I can understand why the average German readily supported Adolf Hitler and Nazism. In this post-modernist society I am disgusted by the same societal lack of virtues and values that Germans also experienced during the Weimar republic. That is not to say that I support Nazism, but I can relate to the reasons why the average German citizens did so. And if enough other conservatives feel the way I do, it is a matter of time before another charismatic right wing leader is elected into power and changes the world forever.

In one episode a jewish police officer get shot from the nazis who dressed up as communists to blame the murder at them. They dont tell like a documentary why jews where hatred from the nazis but you have to know that the nazis where not on power at this time so this is not the main topic. Its more about the gaining of power of different political partys like the commies, the centralist, the nazis or the conservative who want the kaiser back. Also the different global players like the UDSSR or mafiagangs who where activ in this time in berlin who are trying to gain power. To understand why the nazis came on power and did horrible things you have to understand the history of Germany before 1932. This TV-Show is doing his job good at it. Try it :)

Or maybe people just don't like other people who refuse to assimilate and have a different religion and culture. I'm Latvian and I see this today in Latvia too with the attitude towards Russian speaking minority, and I see it in Europe with Muslims as well. Of course there are always a certain percentage of bad people in all cultures and in some, due to circumstances, there could be more of those than in others, but mostly people just base their opinions on stereotypes unfortunately.

Very good show. One problem though. The liberal-left say Nazis, Nazis, Nazis... They never spell out the full name, "National Socialists", to hide the fact that it is socialism. Nazism is a nationalist faction of socialism where the main faction is international socialism. National Socialism, (international) Socialism, Fascism, these are all collectivist, centrally controlled ideologies, the complete opposite of the right, which stands for individualism, private capitalism, and is against central control.

Quite funny that you assume I might respond with left wing propaganda just because I said John's statement were wrong. Anyway, I will give you a short answer. The political situation in the Weimar republic (1918-1933) was extremely complex, as many political parties sought for power - please keep in mind that this was the first democracy in German history. Not just the extremes, e.g. NSDAP or KPD, but also liberals, social democrats, conservatives, and separatists were quite influential. The times were highly political. Back then, there was no election threshold, so the parliament was full of different people, and finding common grounds was more difficult than nowadays. Moreover, after WW1, many Germans felt humiliated by the victors, and the war reparations (stated in the treaty of Versailles) demanded a great deal of the people and politics. This led to a rise of demagogues, and among others things to the takeover of Hitler. This, however, was certainly not the only option. Since the first democracy had its flaws, it could not properly foresee how Hitler will play the system to declare himself dictator (please google "Ermächtigungsgesetz"). But the Weimar republic had well working institutions indicating that it was a functioning state. These kind of things are well depicted in Babylon Berlin btw. Without Hitler or other extremists, it could have worked. That said, there was no implicit need for an alternative, as John stated.

I am afraid you are mistaken. The left did not have such a big impact on the political course after the financial crisis starting 29. It was rather Reichskanzler Bruening with his politics of emergency decrees (more than 100 vs 20 actual laws passed by the government), the international financial situation, and the German industry which wanted to save their assets. It is a fairly complex historical conglomerate, and there are still discussions going on, but to state it 'is all left wing parties fault' is incorrect.

Quite the contrary, it depicts the ramifications of The Treaty of Versailles and the ugliness of the German Depression, although things were considerably worse than even what was shown on the show. It also humanizes the paramilitary faction seeking to rearm the Reich, which is typically instantly vilified.
