Babylon 5: The Road Home Review - A Massive Sci-Fi Return!

Ойын-сауық

Babylon 5, a cult classic sci-fi series returns with Babylon 5: The Road Home. The Road Home is a direct to dvd feature film done in a unique animation style featuring the returning cast of Babylon 5. This sees President Sheridan in a time situation as well as a potential catastrophic multiverse situation. The stakes are big, the animation is grand, and the situation is epic. Babylon 5: The Road Home should absolutely be checked out!

Shoutout to WB for the review copy. Disclaimer. Pop Tot had major dental work done and this review was done about three days after that. He toughed it through to talk about this epic animated flick. If this review does well enough, I'd love to review the pilot episode and potentially more. Let us know what you'd like to see and we will see you all on the next one! - Mr. Tot

It's my favorite series of all time. Cannot wait for the upscaled version. I thought the Excalibur spinoff could really turn into something as well but that project got cut short. Susan Ivanova character was excellent as a military commander and G'Kar was an excellent philosopher. Both had outstanding quotes that will be immortalized.

I don't understand why there's still such disdain for this show form people who call the show 'terrible'. It is not. The acting is not wooden, the performances are not bad, the story is not bad. I think these comments are a load of crap. The show is great and anyone who says its' cheap just can't appreciate complex writing and characters. The budget may be lower than others and have some cheesy moments in acting, but they're few and far in between, but they more than made up for it with incredible story and acting. Even Majel Roddenberry gave her seal of approval. Hell its' better scifi and tv than anything Disney star wars puts out these days. It's not for everyone, but its' certainly not as bad as everyone seems to think.

I loved Babylon 5 and still greatly respect it's legacy to this day. It was better than all Star Trek except the best parts of Deep Space 9. I hope they make more like this. One thing surprised me and that's the lack of AI cloned voices. Maybe that was not done out of respect for the deceased actors but it's so easy to do and I think the families would've appreciated a pay check. If we can watch Presidents playing AD+D I don't see why we can't hear G'kar and Mr Garibaldi in their original voices.

@@CaesiusX honestly, it’s all over the Internet. JMS brought his idea for Babylon 5 to Paramount. They declined and yet they then rush to production deep space nine to air it as close as possible to b5. I loved DS9. But Babylon 5 will forever have a special place in my heart. It’s the show my dad and I watched it together and sleeping in light aired not long after my father passed away.

@@surfacingcom I tried to say just that (search "Babylon 5 vs DS9") and included a 3 min informative clip from a *JMS* interview. But every attempt at commenting continues to be autodeleted! 😫 🤷🏼‍♂️ I also noted that Paramount had the B5 show bible for almost a year. Also that Paramount bullied local stations into not showing B5. On a more personal note, one can be up in arms over the situation while still being a fan of both shows. Cast members appear to hold no animosity towards one another. Thanks for adding the details you included. ··•●✺●•··

The series is not coming out in 4K. It's just the hbo/amazon "remaster" on disc. Not a true remaster. The SFX are not re-rendered, and effects/live action are not recomposited. It's an upgrade from DVD quality, but it's not going to look like the TOS/TNG remasters.

I saw The Road Home the other day. Overall I was disappointed. It seemed to be a convoluted way of getting as many cameos of the main characters without actually accomplishing anything. Basically it was Sheridan gets unstuck in time, interacts with some classic characters in some past, future, and alternate reality scenes, and then goes home. Nothing really happens. I also find it unlikely that Londo and the others would be sitting there, watching the Moon about to hit Earth and kill them all. Surely people would be trying to escape, even if they were likely going to get killed by the Vorlon ships, as there was a small chance of surviving, unlike the impact of the Moon. I also remember in the series that when the shadows were attacking Babylon 5, that Garibaldi was the one who set the reactors to blow. Oh well, hoping for the new reboot of the series.

I definitely need to watch this absolutely loved B5 back in the 90's it blew star trek TNG out of the water imo the ship design particularly the human ships were far more believable with rotating sections as we didn't have the technology for artificial gravity everything looked functional and believable imo. The acting was top notch with great chemistry standouts for me being G'kar and Londo's relationship and how it evolved over the shows entire length.

Babylon 5 was probably the most influential scifi telly since TOS Star Trek. In terms of the actual arc of the stoy and the way JMS structured things like a novel with plot hints (political and potential of a war) dropped in the first five or six episodes of the first series did not bloom until seasons three and four I don't think has been surpassed, although the BSG reimagining came close. The current Trek fixation with story arc's can trace its roots back to DS9 (my fave post-TOS trek BTW) getting its arse kicked by B5 in terms of content. DS9 might have had the flashy effects budget but it did not get off to a good start and was in S3 before it found its stride by basically copying B5's novel for the telly format with the Dominum War. I thought this was a good opener to a reboot, especially with how the final shot of Sheridan and Delen (pre-transformation) left us in an alt Universe leaving the door open to reimagine the Shadow war and the fight for freedom from a corrupted Earth gov for a new audience with special effects that won't be laughed at. No one is laughing now though as B5's pioneering use of computer graphics for effects work is now the go-to choice for film and telly makers.

I'm old enough to have seen Star Trek's and Star Wars' debut. They were both ground breaking. Real action space Sci-Fi that did not look not cheezy. B5 did not break new ground for effects but it was and still is the best epic story of the genre. Star Wars' story is great but does not hold a candle to the scale of B5's storyline and Trek's story is all over the place. B5 is the only one of the three that I can watch for the 100th time and pick up on something I missed.

The ending scene between Molari and G'Kar to me was not believable. Are we to belive that the Narn had not been on the path to becoming a power? That the Narn turned away from the path of vengeance? If the Shadow War had not happened the Centauri and Narn would have gone to war regardless , but not in the same manner with the Shadows backing anyone

gotta say, I'm a HUGE fan of B5 and I loved the animation in "The road home" but...... coming from the grandeur that was the series , this did fall a little flat for me. At times, they treated Sherridan's character like a clown-walking into de'len's closset for example. There was literally no dilemma in the animated movie or real sense of dread for his character. The graphics, animation and sound were brilliant. I just wish the story had matched the visuals. I hope any return of the series has better story and pacing that matches the original series.

Big B5 fan but The Road Home was awful. My main gripe was Sheridan's complete lack of agency in the film and that it didn't really have a story to tell. The 'love conquers all' plot felt weak and wasn't earned at all within the film. Any new viewers would be left scratching their heads without knowing the context of Sheridan/Delenn's relationship. This was a real chance here to tell a new B5 story or maybe focus on one alternate reality where Sheridan has a chance to make a hard choice to do something different, but we get a weird rehash of what we already know, replete with annoying info dumps (presumably for any new viewers, but no one new to B5 is going to have any idea what's going on or know why they should care). The humour was mostly awful and the Zathras thing was very very tiresome by the end. At best it's a nostalgia trip that's fleetingly enjoyable. At worst, it feels like clip show that's trying to be a backdoor pilot to an alternate reality B5? Whole affair feels weirdly hollow. Maybe this can lead to a rebooted alternate reality B5 animated series. I'd watch that... but this felt like a squandered opportunity that added nothing to B5 cannon. 4/10 for me. Nice to be momentarily back in the B5 universe but felt largely pointless. A shame. If there's any more animated content I'd really like to see other writers involved with JMS maybe taking a step back to exec producing.
