    The look on Londo's face from 3:20 onwards is absolutely fitting. Londo had just started a war with the Narn and here is his archenemy G'Kar seeking to reconciliate with him. You can clearly tell that Londo did not enjoy this drink at all because he knew in that very moment he screwed up badly. They don't make actors like that anymore and it's sad.

    And when G'Kar found out about the attack, he had every right to be enraged at Londo and to hate him, I would too in G'Kar's place. A big concern I had though was that G'Kar would think that Emperor Turhan lied about being sorry that his people did many terrible things to the Narns and ordered the attack on the Narn colony at Quadrant 14.

    I think Londo was ashamed, but I don't think he thought of the attack as a mistake, not at this point. G'kar had been a villain right up until this episode; he had missed several chances to prevent a new war, and instead had been actively seeking to start one (Ragesh 3, for example). Londo respected G'kar but also knew he was an implacable enemy. Don't forget Londo already knew he would die at G'kar's hands. I think he saw a war with the Narn as inevitable (as G'kar did), and so wanted to get it over with, before the Centauri Republic went even deeper into decline and became weaker. No doubt Londo wondered over that drink if maybe peace had been a possibility, but I think even then he probably believed that they had already passed the point of no return and G'kar's gesture was too little, too late. The shame came from having to be deceptive and dishonorable, accepting a gift in bad faith. Londo had a code, and even if he believed that he was doing his duty, the sleaziness of accepting a gift in bad faith from a respected enemy must have grated on him.

    I like how the Shadow's first shot wipes out the C&C area at the centre of the space station, meaning nobody would be left alive to send out a distress call. The second shot wipes out the Cruiser, the only ship in the area that poses even a small threat to the Shadow ships. After that they can wipe out the fighters and the colony below with relative impunity.

    I didn't catch that, but yeah totally smart tactics. Probably the area had been scouted and the attack planned long in advance.

    See also: they kept one ship in reserve, as to not tip their hand just in case. I'm reminded of New Doctor Who, when the Dalek made its first reappearance. Confronted by a whole room full of armed mercenaries, whose guns were completely ineffective. The Dalek could have just blasted them all one by one. Instead it used some kind of electricity-beam on a water sprinkler, shocking everyone who had been doused in one blast. A powerful enemy is scary enough. But one that uses intelligent tactics? Now that's really scary!

  • @dirdib69
    @dirdib693 жыл бұрын

    It was simply a slaughter. Note how the colony just explodes when the three beams hit it. JMS has said that the Shadow energy beam could core a planet if it was fired long enough. And then the scene with Londo and G'Kar, and the terrible knowledge Londo has to face - that things could have been different between their people, but that he's just closed that door forever.

    @@wanderingthedesert5599 but it kinda makes one wonder what the vorlon fleet is up to at the same time. The shadows are more open, more chaotic, but even the vorlons had plans. What might their fleet have been doing at the time that this was occurring? And who might they have been attacking or subjugating? I know it's not their style, but they were player two in this cosmic game.

They saught to rally the younger races to fight The Shadows for 1000 years after the last Shadow War. They programmed the younger races to see them as gods and seeded them with telepathic abilities . This is why when Sheridan asked Kosh to bring the Vorlons into the fight he said "You do not know what you ask. But you will." When the Shadows and the Vorlons clashed with the Vorlons winning the minor skirmish The Shadow war escalated into a world destroying conflict.

    I remember watching this and having a hard time feeling sympathy for the Narn. Remember episode 1 opened with a Narn sneak attack on a Centari colony. Obviously the Centari and Shadow took things WAY TOO FAR. But the Narn did want a war. They provoked the Centari all throughout season 1. They wanted war they just didn’t count on the Shadows being involved.

    Centauri had at least four Vorchan class ships and at least a dozen Sentri class fighters if not more. Narns had at least one G'Quan class heavy cruiser, three orbital structures, and at least a dozen Frazi class heavy fighters and at least a dozen more Frazi class heavy fighters showed up as reinforcements. without the Shadows it would have been a much more even fight but the Centauri would have still had an advantage. possibly losing at least two of their ships and half a dozen fighters in the process. not to mention the possibility of a ground Invasion which would also cost them thousands of lives Babylon 5 Lord Refa-We couldn't take it without a major assault.- We would lose thousands of lives.

    Strange that a) The Narn attack a superior force (I am talking about the recon-flight, not the defenders of the colony, they didn't have a chance to reverse course and flee to the jumpgate (not to mention that the Shadows can't be lost in hyperspace! They don't use the beacons, their hyperspace-technology doesn't rely on the beacons!) and b) That the Centauri aren't jamming the transmissions! Keep the Narn in the dark just a little longer!

    it takes time for the jumpgate to charge up. they sent the signal and running would just make them easy to destroy. so they decided to engage and take as many centurai with them as they could. sometimes you have to make a last stand rather then be cut down without fighting.

    Attacking superior forces: The Narn tend to charge in when they have their blood up. they loose discipline especially when Centauri are involved. Look at G'kar* he went wild trying to go after Londo. When they were defending B 5. Garibaldi ordered his Narn forces to a prepared position and bottle up Clarks forces but they charged in and made it a battle of attrition

    The Narn and the Drazi tend to make the same tactical mistakes. They become overly aggressive (Narn due to emotions and the Drazi due to instinct) and that makes them cannon fodder to any more advanced race.

    The point wasn't to keep the Narn in the dark. The Centauri wanted a war, which is why they let the Shadows destroy the colony and then show up to wave their flag over the ruins to take credit.
