One of the most underrated sci fi shows in my opinion. Absolutely loved this. The stories,the acting & production all excellent.

Like a spider and a nightmare had a child. What I love about them is how they seem to just totally ignore inertia when they want to, changing direction in a moment. Also they’re energy weapons, used to slice and cut rather than just blast most of the time. And most of all, of course, the *scream*.

I remember seeing this for the first time. Until now, the Shadow ships had ripped through anything (like huge Narn destroyers) easily, but here the Vorlon ships are just tanking their beams. It was so cool.

The Vorlons had the power to wipe out the Shadows anytime they wanted. But up till this point they were respecting the Rules of Engagement. Neither side wanted to win, they wanted to be proven right.

the shadows aren't here to fight the elder races. which is why they got taken by surprise. The Shadows mission is to speed the lesser races to ascendancy through conflict. When you look into it deeper, the shadows thought they were doing the lesser races a favor. In their heads they were the heroes, while the Vorlon was simply cynics, unwilling to let the lesser races develop through war but instead were willing to sit back and watch them suffer through a hundred thousand years whilst feeling superior and exploiting them for their own games.

I think that's part of what rounded out the Shadows for me - no necessarily evil just survivalists. The Vorlons let races suffer where they could have intervened and the Shadows tipped the scales for the likes of the Centauri. Both sides playing God - one hands off New Testament and one fire and brimstone Old Testament style.

The problem that the Vorlons AND the Shadows ignore is that both of them are unable to do their job to begin with. They dont live like the newer races, then dont fear the same things, they have entirely differend problems to them... Its as if they teach a baby how to be gods but ignore that they need to teach, the human as an example, how to be a human first.

Lawfull Evil and Lawfull Good, both are 2 extremes (thus, chaotic good is the only REAL good). But yes, the Shadow's had their idea, while the Vorlons had theirs. Its called Ideology clash, something we have currently on earth still. Thou realy? Capitalism and Democracy won over Autokratie and Komunism (WICH IS NOT SOCIALISM FFS!) nearly 30 years ago. Those still sticking with it are on the loosing side. Hell we even have something similar to the Interstellar alliance, yet that thing is basicaly a disabled child these day's... their glory ended when they made ONE MISTAKE back in the 80's to 90's. After that they became pacifist when in reality they should send out forces to HELP civilians in need and against oppression (Imagine, the UN moving their forces finaly AND liberating africa from its warlord idiots once and for all. This would then send a message around the globe that the UN is back AND that their able to actualy ENFORCE stuff, wich in turn would let china think THRICE bevor commiting genocide again in their own nation, it could be that UN forces would finaly intervene)

I remember watching this the first time back in the mid 90s and jumping out of my seat to punch the air with excitement at the Vorlons fighting the Shadows. Then, to be in despair by the end of the episode

I recall what Lorien said about the First Ones and low birth rate. Kosh's death must have been as traumatic for the Vorlons as Dukhat's was for the Minbari.

If you read the expanded stuff even more so. Vorlons are basically immortal and even if you destroy their physical forms they won't die just become energy that reforms into them again. Only the elder races can actually KILL them. So you lost a Vorlon who has been around since the time they became immortal (most likely as new Vorlons are rarely created) billions of years ago... Shadows on the other hand lived VERY short lives (shorter than humans if i recall), but had a kind of collective memory and grew in huge numbers fighting and improving themselves.

@Thurgosh_OG shadows as a RACE were much older than the Vorlons, but from the perspective of the elder races, they had short INDIVIDUAL lifespans if I remember correctly. (Most of the elder races developed some sort of immortality vis-a-vas time and disease, but it went against the shadow philosophy) I remember looking it up after posting this and I think it was longer than the younger races like 3-500 years.

I remember watching this when it was first broadcast in the UK, absolutely awesome!

This is the only time in the entire B5 series that you see a shadow vessel ripped apart into so many small pieces by a single ship. There were many scenes of the shadow vessels getting killed in other episodes, but they were all killed in less dramatic fashion e.g. distorted but never shattered into so many small pieces. There was one other occasion where a shadow vessel got ripped into many pieces, in the episode "shadow dancing" but that was due to convergence of firepower of 5 ships: 4 whitestars and one narn cruiser

I'm pretty sure we see one get blasted to pieces by a Narn G'Quan class heavy cruiser. It just keeps on firing till the twin blasts go through.

Fairly telling about their relative power when a Vorlon Transport can take out a full on Shadow Warship 1v1. Those Shadow ships varied from 1-3km across and yet the transport just mows it down like it's not even there.

With out telepathy not even the vorlons could stop the shadows and it was a surprise attack also if you watching the same video as me it was a small shadow ship and we never got to see the biggest one's in the end war you see shadows destroying vorlons just as easily as they destroy everyone else

Oh and lets not forget that the shadows are holding back and not useing there full power like the jump point disruption technology ship melding and if you do also the shadows don't need jump points that had hyper space travel before the vorlons even mastered normal space travel so they could of destroyed the vorlons many years before the vorlons even had space travel they are many times more powerful than the vorlons that's why the vorlons needed the younger races to help them

@@leemiah3583 You must not know the lore of this IP and it seems you were not paying attention in the final battle of the shadow war. Full on Shadow warships are one shot by the Vorlons while only scratching the Vorlon ships in return. We also know that the Shadows and Vorlons are the same age more or less, they are both first ones from the same generation after Lorian. Vorlons themselves ARE telepathic too, so any full on battle between them would result in a Shadow loss. We know the only reason the Vorlons did not just destroy them is NOT because they lacked the ability, they wanted to be right. You cannot prove the other wrong if you kill them. Jump point disruptors are only useful against a fleeing enemy, so irrelevant point. The Shadows ability to phase into and out of hyperspace is also irrelevant since it does not seem to be usable in combat or at least as a defensive tool. Not that it would do any good vs the Vorlons anyway, they are literally beings of pure energy. Vorlons had stronger ships, we know that to be true from the creator of the IP. It's about their doctrines. The Vorlons aimed for perfection and to stand above the other races. The Shadows wanted to incite conflict and present an enemy strong enough to weed out the weaklings but weak enough to be defeated. With that kind of thinking, it's obvious as to why the Vorlon ships are so much stronger.

@@Ishlacorrin not all the shadow ships no you clearly see the shadows are just as dangerous as vorlons and It is well known that shadows are much older than vorlons you also clearly see shadow ship destroying vorlons ship even see a vorlon dreadnought have it's command bridge taken out buy a shadow weapon and you can see the shadows use there hyper space phase when they attack the narn base also when the shadow death cloud surrounded the hole war zone everything inside was dieing including the vorlons super cooling power draining getting picked off and we still don't get to see the really big shadow ships the 3km one's The shadows don't want to kill everone I know that so they would have to pull there punching and the one shot that you are taking about I a shadow fighter not a war ship the reason why earth used shadow technology two develop the warlock dreadnought is because the shadows technology is the more advanced

@@leemiah3583 You are wrong, the creator of B5 says otherwise, so i'm going by his word. There was never anything shown to indicate that the Shadow Cloud effected the Vorlons at all. After it came into the picture we stop seeing anything but younger race ships. We see plenty of the biggest Shadow Crabs in both battles and they die in one show from Vorlon weapons. You misunderstand the tech, the only time they phase is when they arrive or leave. In the Narn ambush battle they arrive that way and then tank an anti-matter energy mine explosion on their shield/bio armour, that is all. What we see is not the whole picture either, JMS is where you need to be getting your information if you want the full lore.

Even today this stands up as a brilliant si-if series. I have shown it to my kids and there friends. Including 110 episodes and movies. To say they loved is an understatement. Ok some of the special effects are not at the highest level. But there brilliant for the time. Plus better than some movies use today. I still think its still as good today and i hope any remake is up to standards. Plus true to the original. Please don't make a hash of it. Its to good to waste.

I loved the B5 universe. This one moment always stays in my mind for one reason. For 99.9999% of the time when the shadows see ANY jump gate opening they really don't care as they know its the people coming out the jump gate that will be turning or running or being destroyed. It would of been intresting to see what the pilots of the shadow ships would be thinking seeing vorlons coming out and realising they were going to be in a real fight and not a slaughter

I wonder, when the Earth Alliance and Minbar were reverse-engineering Vorlon tech for the Excalibur class ships...did they take a crack at replicating that deflector shield? I guess if Crusade had gone on longer, we might have found out!

I remember seeing this ambush for the first time during the initial run. Blood pumping stuff! Sounds silly perhaps, but this signalled the escalation - and revelation - of a significant change in the status quo, and the expected fallout because of it.

from what i got lore wise the vorlons were very limited in numbers they had lost the ability to reproduce at some point and they had a fixed number and every vorlon had a ship assigned to them, the shadows likewise had a limited reproduction but couldf still do so they how ever learned how to utalize other beings to pilot their ships and called on allies, fire power wise vorlon ships out classed shadow vessels but the shadows tended to field larger number of ships that were also a smidge more agile than the medium to larger vorlon ships, so it was a case of swarms of similar class vessels VS a smaller but more diverse class of ships with more fire power, the shadows also has a hyperspace tech that allowed stealth entering and exiting so they could ambush people or escape easy.

I am pretty sure the Shadows and Vorlons would destroy any mighty force in Star Trek like the Borg. Maybe species 8472 could fight them of... but I doubt it

right they wore taken by surprise but if say and earth vessel had taken them by surprise or mimbari vessel had taken them by surprise they would most likely not live to tell about it.

I havent fully followed up on the whole episodes and stories. last episode I watch was the death of a Vorlon ambassador, I havent caught on that important episode of what happened next. Yup, their ship is highly advance like a BioShip similar to Moya, but they are more highly advance. We definitely need to have those on our side.😅❤❤❤.

I hear ya, and I wanted to edit it similar to that. But the music was too jarring for such a short sequence. This is all a linear cut. I just omitted scenes I didn't rearrange any. If there's an underlay of music I usually opt to let the original edit play through as I find sound jumps to be more jarring.

The Vorlons were certainly more powerful! I think the Shadows only win due to more ships

I think the shadows are the ones with the Advance technology they don’t need jump gates to enter in and out off hyper space they have a cloud type planet killer with thousands of missiles and that can also disable a hole fleet with Extreme cold where jump engines cannot fire up and escape.

Both sides had planet killers, they fought for thousands of years, if they wanted each other dead someone would have won by now. This was the entire point of the show, it was two guardians with opposing philosophies who had different ideas for younger races but during the conflict they lost their way.

JMS was very interactive with the fans during its run so we really got to hear it straight from the writers mouth what he was trying to accomplish.

these shadow ships was not for the vorlons, but for younger races. In the battle of Coriana 6 The Shadows were ready for the Firstones and took everyone by the scruff

organic ships.. planet killer.. these concepts are borrowed by so many other SciFi. specially specie8472 ship on Star trek.

Love star trek I watch it in 60 as a kid but babylon 5 was better for one reason it was a film over 5 season

Jesus christ do you know how long it took just to get Babylon 5 released in proper 4:3 again. Filming in wide-screen standard def was the worst thing they could have done because all they did was crop all the space scenes make it fake wide-screen. All so we could see some extra set wall space.

Shadows were cool. Stagnation leads nowhere. We need to fight
