Scientists at California State University have discovered that baby great white sharks gather in ‘nurseries’, unaccompanied by adults and have a preference for warmer, shallower water. Its thought this behaviour may help optimise their growth and minimize the risk of predation.
The team studied the sharks in the waters around Padaro Beach near Santa Barbara, California using sensors that measured water pressure and temperature in real time, and tracked each juvenile’s position by sending acoustic ‘pings’ into an array of receivers, spread out over approximately 5.5 sq km along the shoreline.
