There are fewer people who can claim that a baby penguin jumped on their belly than there are people who can claim to have climbed every tall mountain. In fact, more people have been in space than there have been people who've had a baby penguin on their belly. This person was/is, in this, truly unique.

As far as I know, there's a rule to not interact or intervene with any animals for wildlife photographer so that the balance in nature don't be disturbed. For example, saving a deer from a wolf might be heroic but that also means one more hungry wolf. Such is nature, so it's in best interest to interact as less as possible except in extraordinary circumstances. That's why most of the unique interactions by wildlife photographer started by the wildlife approaching them on its own instead of them initiating contact. Idk about petting though, but I also think it was best to let the penguin did whatever they wanted until it satisfied its curiosity and become bored and left asap on its own.

Well, by law you cannot interact with animals in protected areas. So, it is not that he doesn’t touch it. He just can’t physically move to touch it. It can touch him all it wants though.

Is like teaching an wolf to go seek a hug from the first armed human hunter he sees in the forest. That's why you CAN but you shouldn't hug every animal you have the urge to.

You may not be allowed to touch the animals, but absolutely nothing is really stopping the animals from touching you

I used to work at the zoo and we weren’t allowed to “touch” certain animals, but we did anyways, including the penguins. And we had more restrictions than researchers, they don’t have anyone in their back watching

Nah, I bet that happened during the Shackleton Expedition. The sailors write about how the penguins would walk right up to them and even wander into camp. Made hunting them so easy that much of their diet was penguin. They say that penguin meat is exceptionally greasy, and they all got tired of it pretty quick.

@@Murrel. It's a really great story. For two years these dudes are stranded in the ice wastes of Antarctica. A few of them rig a lifeboat with a sail and go on an all-or-nothing sea voyage on across some of the roughest waters in the world to go find help. They succeed. Not a single person died during the whole experience. Ironically, most of the crew were drafted when the returned home to Britain and died in the trenches during WW1. :(

I like how rather than shooing the penguin away, he encouraged the little thing.

Just dawned on me that I've been taking it for granted that we can see images like this because I grew up with the tech explosion from the 80's. But wow. When I was a kid we had broadcast TV and 16mm film docs, and then finally IMAX came along in a feasible way. Then digital in the 2000s and here we are. But let's never get used to how special it is to see things in HD happening in places where we weren't there.

Well there are some that prey on chicks. It’s more Antarctic penguins only encountered humans for the first time about 150 years ago. They don’t really know what we are, so unlike most other animals they’ve no instinct to be feared of us.
