Sang this in high school choir back when I was a freshman and not once thought that the song had anything to do with sexual harassment. At the school's winter concert, my brother and I did duets with two girls while the rest of the choir sang behind us. The girl I sang with had such a voice. She's been dead almost 10 years after suffering a seizure. RIP Becca Evenson, I hope you're singing with the angels. 😞

Those were the days when a child danced with their parent, by placing her feet on his shoes. I thought I was the world's greatest dancer. If I remember correctly, the singer's name was Buddy Clark. I've often wondered if children still do this.

On the flip side just look at how delicate everyone is today who are outraged and upset over anything, so I think to be honest we’re probably both right with certain things that were more innocent and certain things that weren’t. We would be wrong to say that the human race has been innocent at any point though.. I do genuinely wish you a merry and none cynical Christmas ❤️

@benironside1264 What a tender reply and well received. Mankind is not "innocent" for sure. I grew up in a time not without sin, but through grace alone. There used to be more respect in my day. My heart breaks for Israel. For the sake of the Gentiles, they too, have paid a great price. One day, Jesus will save All of Israel. For today, I thank God for His love and mercy. Christmas is commercialized, even by songs like we have commented on. This is the most scared event to have happened for all of mankind. May the Lord bless you and your home. You know what is happening in a deeply spiritual way. I am as well. Let's hold each other's hands in a sense and praise our King. We did not kill Him, but He freely laid His life down so all who call on Him can live with Him in eternity. Merry Christmas and the peace and joy of this season be with you today and all year long. This is what Christmas is all about.

Dragon Butts no fucking no. She sits and drink with him. She likes his company. I can't argue that obviously older movies had way too many stereotypes in them. Of course, cause it is just a reflection of the society. But in this movie, i strongly believe it's not like that. First of all, both sexes try to persuade the other person to stay with them. Then, their excuses are just to "play hard to get". I'm not a fan of it not to hide that, but it's not harmful. It isn't promoting sth criminal

Even the one music video I've seen takes the modern angle of it, even involving a prison cage falling down as if one of them is being trapped. Having watched this with the body language and softer singing I can somewhat see the other angle as well, but out of context with the words alone it does feel a tiny bit creepy with modern perspectives.

Okay to clear it up for the people confused about the song, they are both thinking of ways to let her stay at his, since it was frowned upon in society to stay at a mans/partner’s house if you were unmarried. This song was about fighting the social norms of that time period. “Say whats in this drink?” It isn’t about drugging the drink, its a saying/phrase meaning ‘excuse my behaviour/blame it on the alcohol’. There is nothing creepy about this song. The original songwriter wrote it for his wife and preformed it with her! Truly a beautiful story of love! Enjoy the song! ❤️

This movie was definitely among the most controversial of the time for that reason (what likely saved it though is that it's never revealed what happened afterwards, meaning she could have slept on the couch and he in the bedroom, making this just barely acceptable). There was actually another film released two years later that makes even this look tame: Captain Horatio Hornblower. That 1951 film was EXPLOSIVELY controversial because it appeared to positively portray an adulterous romantic relationship between the Captain and his aristocrat passenger, Lady Barbara (a fictional family member of the Duke of Wellington). The film bent the rules by later revealing that it TECHNICALLY WASN'T adultery because the Captain's wife had in fact died during his voyage absence and apparently before the affair began. After Lady Barbara's post-voyage arranged marriage ends due to her husband being killed in combat, she comes to the Captain's house in Britain with a big "naughty" smile on her face and it's implied their relationship became a full on love story or marriage. Absolutely shocking for the 50s.

FYI, the song is not about rape. The song, at the time was regarded as pro-woman's liberation because she wants to stay, and does so in the end. Her argument for leaving encompasses all of the reasons that society tells her she should not stay, which amounts to a woman being vilified for her sexuality.

But I listen to these Millenials and they talk about "Leave it to Beaver" as if it were the new Star Wars movie, and they are sad because they found the American Dream the same way we Xers did, just a Dream, not real, and neither is Beaverville or Pleasantville.

And sometime after that, some idiot woman came over to him and start giving him shit and accusing him of 'looking' at her. He waved his finger at her in the dismissive manner, and told her that he was gay and there was nothing even remotely attracted to look at on her, and even if she was attractive the only thing keeping you look at that was the clothing she wore and where he could find it. Even with one step further to say that he knew that they were drag queens who dressed far more prettier and more feminine than she is. Needless to say I'm almost choked on my drink with laughter. I wish it were directed playfully. As it is he’s badgering her and taking her coat off constantly. It’s even worse in the gender reversal part at the end. In both, they want to leave, they look angry! How is that flirty? So yeah, it reads as harassment even in this context. If they laughed or smiled each time their clothes were taken off them then fine, but they don’t. They look angry, the guy even leaves in the second one and returns only because he has the wrong coat on. I’m not sure most people can see harassment due to scenes in films like this.

I thought the same, till I watched the video. The first couple its clear that the woman is not flirting. The second one less so since it implies that they are already sleeping with each other in the end, but it certainly looked like she was harassing him throughout most of it.

In context, there is nothing wrong with this song 1. The hesitation to stay by the woman in the first part, and the man in the second part, is mostly social commentary on societal norms on how men and women should behave with regards to premarital sex. The concern is not with spending the night with the lover, but how it would be perceived by society 2. “what’s in this drink” does not mean the drink has drugs in it. It was an idiom common at the time that implied “this is a strong drink” or “I feel a bit buzzed.” In this case, it could even mean that “l have strong feelings for you but I’m blaming the drink” It’s easy to cherry pick a few words and use them out of context and twist them to mean what you want them to mean. It’s particularly telling how those objecting to this song fail to even mention the reversed roles of the second part.

when she says "the answer is *_no_*" SJWs seem to hold on to this one in particular, i guess. in their infinite many wrinkles they seem to think this implies the song should cut off here, to silence, or something. and while he does keep removing her hat and coat, touches her thigh, etc(The most risque part of the scene for back then) you can see he draws the line at forcing; it looks to me like he wouldn't dream of it, letting her pull away at every opportunity but trying to reel her back in. he's just trying to convince a girl he has feeling for, that he believes has feelings for him, to stay with him. I have a feeling if she really set her foot down, it'd be different. The first one, the way they rest at the end, in conclusion, very much appears as though he succeeded in convincing her to stay. She, smilingly, gently, sits down with him again. No forcing here. The SECOND example ends more like rape than the first, with the man being unable to escape from the girl who is in _His fucking house._ PUSHING HIM ONTO A COUCH AND TURNING OFF A LIGHT. He even has an almost uncomfortable look: "What will this do to my reputation...." But you won't see SJW's raising a stink about it. because apparently women can't rape.

This song is from the 40’s where woman can’t even checking out men and men can’t do the same cause it will cause gossip also (in the second) the guy doesn’t want the girl to be the gossip that’s why he says that he has to go. I remember something along the line : someone should but that doesn’t mean they would

I had never really listened to the song was in the movie "Elf," and thought it was a nice cute little song. I didn't discover it again until I saw this clip posted to a thread I was following, and found the movie. Montalban and Williams did the straight part, and then Skelton and Garrett loosened it up a bit. And to anyone dissing the song, not only is it totally innocent, but refreshing after seeing the sewage being forced on us today. Give me 1949 any day. And a smooth guy like Ricardo!

In 1944, Frank Loesser wrote "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for his wife, Lynn Garland, and himself to sing at a housewarming party in New York City at the Navarro Hotel. They sang the song to indicate to guests that it was time to leave. Nothing more than just being a playful fun song was intended. Those who read any type of demeaning content into it, are just victims of their own dark thoughts.

It took until 2015 to sell 125 million copies -- and that's for the whole series, not just the first book. With that said, we can all agree that you're still essentially right: This whole song-banning shit is nonsense.
