Baby Chimpazee at the North Carolina Zoo

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Early this month, North Carolina Zoo staff made the tough decision to take their new baby chimp in for hand-rearing after it became clear that the baby's first-time mother could not adequately care for her. The baby is healthy and eating well and weighs 3 lbs. 14 oz. She is cared for by staff 24 hours a day and is carried by them most of the time except for brief periods in an incubator. The goal is to get the infant back into the chimpanzee group as soon as possible. She is shown to the chimpanzee group each day for visual socialization.

She is so precious. I'm totally obsessed with chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans right now. I can't get enough of these amazing, intelligent, beautiful, fascinating animals that are so much like us. This baby was a handful at feeding time. Looks like she liked her thumb an awful lot....just like a lot of human babies. I'd love to see her today, more than 10 years later. :)

@@ronniebuchanan6575 I'm a fellow "obsee". I don't know if perhaps you were watching a video of a baby macaque. Poached baby macs are big business, complete with a type of organized crime surrounding it. They make it look like they are "rescued", that's the first video. There are some things that they get into. Baths, often in cold water so it shocks the nervous system and they scream and fight are a staple. They like hurt and sick ones. They get more views. Vets are never vets. These babies are illegal so no vet. And these babies are for exploiting, not for spending any money on. One of the more recent themes was monkeys sucking their thumbs and fingers. They did everything to stop it, actually taped their fingers together. One baby was forced to wear baby mittens on its hands and feet for months. These babies are so traumatized that they can develop self-harming behaviors. Sometimes one starts chewing its fingers and makes them sore and raw. It's not because of the sucking but tge chewing. They are hardwired to stay latched on to mom's teat and cling to her chest for about 12 months. It's how they get fed, get body warmth, stay safe and ready for mom to run away from danger in a snap. It provides security and love. So it's true they get milk but being latched onto a teat gives so much more. These captive babies are in almost every case poached with brutality, moms fight. They are shot or killed and the baby jersey away. They are often significantly wounded. Sucking a thumb or finger is their last and only way to self soothe. Not allowing that is another cruelty for entertainment.

There are ways to put cereal and milk in a bottle(a special bottle), so that he can suckle and get the cereal at the same time. I did this w/ my son when he was a baby. I'm sure it can be done with a baby ape, too.

Its antiquated practice. By the time I had my first child I was told to absolutely never put cereal in the bottle and by my daughter it wasn't even mentioned as it was assumed to not be done. I don't mean this in any kind of harsh way. I only say it bc it has 5 likes and it can cause choking. Even if "it worked for me and little Sammy is now a 6 ft 1 quarter back with an IQ of 170" it still caused enough choking and aspiration to be an issue, ya know? My youngest was born very prematurely and choked often, on regular fluids, often, to the point where i had to "bag".. ie get her to breathe...myself. I dont wish that helpless awful feeling on any parent. So ill continue to say "choking hazard" whenever I get a chance...out of love. I know your comment is "old" but not all that old. Still new enough that I figyred id take the opportunity in case someone out there sees this and remembers.

@@user-ob8ju4me6t Oh my goodness! I hadn't thought of that. That must have been really stressful, when you have a baby that chokes easily. I did this in the mid 80s, when my son was born...so, yep, I'm sure it's antiquated by now LOL. I remember I used a different type of bottle that was made for this purpose. We did so many things that were risky, and my Mom did even riskier things, I'm sure.

@@user-ob8ju4me6t that's funny I had my daughter granted along time ago lol but she threw up constantly no matter what formula she was on and she choked alot. So her doctor had me add rice cereal because the flap on her throat whatever it's called wasn't closing right so thickening her bottle she wouldn't choke and throw it up. It worked like magic within a month I had a skinny fussy baby to a chubby happy one. So you had your way I had mine. Whatever is best for the baby I say.

The poor little love seems like he is either too young to eat from a spoon, or he’s overly tired and would much rather prefer the comfort and familiarity of his bottle. Maybe if they don’t wait so long to feed him, he might be a little more curious and willing to work a little harder at taking the food from a spoon, as several times he is seen fighting with the caregiver to get his thumb back into his mouth between spoonfuls of cereal.

There will NEVER be an equal for a chimp parent, but given their genetic closeness to us, it's much like caring for a human baby.As for the masks, while facial expressions are in fact important, the masks is to protect the chimp from disease that can be passed onto them-remember,we can have a cold and not even know, they catch it, they can die. Its safety.

That is a good question!! Most people that are raising infant non human primates find it easiest to place cereal and/or baby food in a bottle mixed with milk (formula) once they are ready to begin having some solids. It seems ridiculous to be trying to make this infant eat like this in a way that is so totally unnatural to what he would be doing in the wild especially when there is a much easier way. Now, once he is ready to start having truly solid foods such as fruits and vegetables and such then it would of course be natural to cut them up into pieces he can handle and allow him to learn to pick them up and put them into the mouth and suck and chew on them until he is ready to take bites and eat it...that is what he would be doing if he were being raised by mom in the wild...I just dont get it here either..they do seem a little clueless in some aspects of his care. It is ridiculous for them to still be wearing masks at the age he is at in this video unless someone is sick but of course if they are sick they should not be anywhere around him anyways. The first couple of months when they are still very fragile and before they have a little bit of immunity built up then I agree with the masks and all but once they are past a few months old such as this one then the infant needs to have that ability to see their expressions and all so that they develop socially and emotionally...this is ridiculous..hopefully they handle things a little different and have learned since this video was made.

The teat on the mama ape vs a bottle are so very different. I actually saw a woman comment that a monkey didn't have big enough breasts to nurse. Im kinda shocked, still, that someone still equates large boobs with milk production. Hi, let's go over mammals again, lol. But I do think, every time I see a bottle fed primate, [which is probably too often], that they're built to have this particular sized nipple and we haven't really done much to change the shapes for different animals. Yes, size and flow, but not so much *shape*. Maybe some inventor will read this lol and take the idea to patent it.

I read feelitworking's comment about how the zoo staff is stupid, etc. Then he/she asks the question - why wear a mask? Well, turns out then, that the zoo staff - and even the baby chimp are smarter than feelitworking. First - the mask. Infant non-human primates are vulnerable to human colds, etc. They are protecting the baby from human illness, and protecting the staff from any illness the baby might have. They are very qualified experts, and are doing a super job of caring for this infant chimp. Their goal is to get her back with her own species. Rather than sit around typing nonsense, do something productive feelitworking. You're not much better than the idiot that stated he'd like to see the older chimps kill and eat the baby. You two prove that many humans are not nearly as smart as these primates.

You are an idiot pal! Look up Jane Goodall or watch Chimp Eden or any zoo videos and you will see the masks are very detrimental to these infants and the ripping of this infant from it's mothers breast, causing the Mum to lose her milk and never learn how to, causing this poor baby to go a minimum 6 months isolated from the its mother and the whole group who play a critical role in that baby's development! The chimp has the same DNA that humans do so unless the chimps are using IV drugs with people outside the enclosure or having unprotected sex out side the zoo, they couldn't possibly be exposed to any contagion that the staff are not already exposed to by the public already! DUH! They don't die from a common cold anymore than you or I do, idiot! Tell me, why didn't she sit the infant with its right arm around her back and put her arm around the baby's back holding its left arm while scooping the food from the bowl on the table so there are no arms or hands to deal with and why are they feeding this baby whole foods now? Because they don't know how to reintroduce this infant back into the group! That's why! How they going to feed it bottles then huh? They should have thought to separate the mother prior to her giving birth so if there were complications they could dart her and make sure the mother has milk and start the breast feeding while she's under and let her awaken with the infant on her breast allowing the baby to safely eat and get to know where to go for more! Don't tell people who really care that these paid employees know anything or have any real concern for these animals because the masks alone tell the whole story!

Dave Seavy How absolutely right you are.....a human mother that didn't wish to have the baby would have just gone for the most current and popular in "birth-control".....ABORTION! At least these workers have dedicated their lives to a calling bigger than life itself! And.....everyone has a first day sometime. We, here in NC, have one of the best natural habitat zoos in the Country; the animals receive excellent care and are watched over with love and the highest of vet skills. I am proud to live only an hour away from such a fine facility.

One thing I have noticed in many of these videos is the lack of grooming and intimate contact, like kissing. Wonder how this affects the chimp?
