Baby Chicks Weeks 1 to 6 Growth and Development
Watch baby chicks grow from hatched to 6 weeks!
Welcome friends! My name is Melissa, and this is Wild Hearts Homestead. This is real life homesteading with kids. The house might be a bit messy, projects might not get done in one sitting, one day, or even in one week, but we love this little life we are living; being submerged in nature, taking time to enjoy our blessings. Thanks for hanging out with us today! It’s always fun getting to chat with you!

Thank you! I just got six chicks last week and was so surprised by how much they have changed in just a week. Now, thanks to you, I can anticipate changes with understanding. 🎉

Hello I just had a quick question I’m new to chickens and are planning on getting some soon but I was wondering if what type of bedding would you recommend in a coop for chicken and at what age should you start transitioning chicks off the starter feed and I’m going to be having my flock of 4 free range I wasn’t to sure?.
Good❤
They are pretty. What bred were they. I enjoyed watching the weekly growth. 👍

Very cute. Getting chicks soon that will be almost 3 weeks old. Do you need to worry about ticks when they're outside at this age?
@WildHeartsHomesteadSC
Жыл бұрын
I have never personally encountered a tick issue with any of my chickens so I can’t say for sure :)
I live in Texas so it’s quite warm already. We only have 5 chicks. Do you think it’s be okay to have them sleep in outdoor coop without brooder plate at 4 weeks?
@WildHeartsHomesteadSC
Жыл бұрын
If it were me, I would put the brooder plate there just to be safe until 6 weeks. Even if they have it and don’t use it. ☺️
I've currently got nearly 3 3 week old hens, been using a heat lamp witch has been fine but I have bought a heat plate and considering swapping to that but it does not have a temperature controller how do I reduce the heat to keep them happy and comfortable, 1st time chicken mum 😁 absolutely loving it and there so tame and friendly.

On my heat plate there are three settings for the legs to raise it up. I monitor if they are not sleeping under the heat plate and raise it to the next peg, they would probably be on the second peg at 3 weeks. You could also have two legs on the first peg and two legs on the second peg so the heat plate slants and they can go further under if they are cold 😊 congrats on your first chickens!! It’s so exciting!!

@Wild Hearts Homestead I will give it a try then thank you for the reply, just really nervous of trying to change anything at the moment as there doing so well, growing nicely and seem really happy haha

This is my first time having chicks, When they go outside, and they stay in their coup at night ,does their food go inside the coup or stay outside or put it away every night ??? And when it rains, what do I do with them ???

Great questions! When I move my chicks outside I keep their food and water in the run area and don’t put it in where their bedding is. You can take it inside if you would like but the general rule of thumb is to keep food and water out of their sleeping area so it doesn’t attract predators. They should be ok if it rains, as long as they have a roof or shelter they can stay under to be dry. Mine will huddle under their roof or go into the coop :) hope that helps! Feel free to ask any questions
I have a broiler chich but after 1 month he is still not covered in furr
Great video thank you. How long do you keep giving them electrolytes and probiotics?

Great question! I will use it until one batch is gone. If any is left after about 5 days I toss it.
Did I miss you mentioning what breeds they were?

How did all of them survive? Did you get them vaccinated or smth?

No I don’t vaccinate my chicks. If I see signs of coccidiosis I treat it as needed. They are all doing great, laying beautiful blue eggs. 💚

@@WildHeartsHomesteadSC I think you might be living in an area with better air quality & atmosphere overall, if I try raising week old chicks they only survive a week.
is the white color chick isa brown?

This whole batch is Easter Eggers, but they can come in all colors. Some of my older hens are ISA brown and My newest batch of chicks are ISA Brown :) they are my favorite breed so far. You can see them on this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aZh1w7SwmLS0qdo.html

As soon as your starter feed is empty then I switch to the grower, once empty I switch to layer. That's the big bags!!

Welcome to the wonderful world of chickens! My first batch I used pine shavings and kept them indoors until around 4 weeks, then I started letting them have some time outdoors in a small pen only while I was with them. Once they have their full feathers and the nights are staying above 55, they can go outdoors as long as they have a secure coop, usually around 9 weeks. I usually don't let them free range until closer to 12-15 weeks old. And I keep them on the chick feed until they start laying, usually around 24 weeks. I hope that helps! Feel free to ask any questions :D
