I agree. I really thought he had had it. I don’t believe a human could have survived that long. We really wanted to help but with all those bison around and knowing how protective they are we couldn’t figure out how to help. We were hoping a ranger would come by but that didn’t happen.
So inspirational, never give up!

Agreed.
Nice video. :) A minor comment is although the baby fell because of the yearling's presence, it didn't seem to me like the yearling pushed the baby. 1:54. I saw it more like the yearling came to smell (touch) the baby and the baby walked closer to the water to go around the yearling and the baby's right front leg slips down in the water, causing it to lose its balance and fall in. That slip happened as the yearling's back left leg slipped after the 2nd smell/touch, causing its head and right leg to go up (which would the opposite of a push). But the touch could have helped a little with the fall. But this is just another's minor interpretation. It was a nice video to watch. Thank you.

Oliver you really pay attention don't you!? At first I thought the same thing but there were a number of other people there watching from several different angles. The consensus was the yearling pushed the baby. Obviously not hard, but enough for it to slip, just like you said, and fall in. I guess we will never know for sure. I can tell you I was really happy it got out. The longer it went on the more I worried.

Thank you Nancy! I was really nervous after the baby was in the water. Every year adults fall in Blacktail Ponds and some never get out. I can't remember if I mentioned that the baby was in there for a little over 12 minutes and it was freezing cold. We really wanted to do something for that baby but we really didn't want to get stomped by all of the adult bison around there. Plus it would be illegal to interfere. Luckily it got out. We were soooo relieved!

That's a human interpretation of wild animals which isn't always applicable. Sometimes in nature, newborns are left to struggle as part of the process to learn.
@JudyLehmbergEpicNature
5 жыл бұрын
I guess that isn't on their list of things they know how to do. I have seen bison go absolutely nuts trying to protect their babies from wolves. In one instance a mama bison stood and defended her baby (it was still born) for hours while the rest of the herd wandered off. She eventually started running fast towards the herd and away from her dead baby. We thought she had given up but she "rallied the troops." Several females came back with her and helped. Obviously it was useless, but they did try. We've also seen several bison "funerals" when a group of bison find a dead one. They all stand around it for a good while. Who knows what is going through their head.

It must have been tough to film that and not intervene. If that calf had died how would the film crew feel? Interesting and important questions on the ethics of these interactions with wildlife. How close is too close, etc?
@JudyLehmbergEpicNature
5 жыл бұрын
Rob it was very tough but I filmed them in Yellowstone National Park where it is illegal, and I believe immoral, to interfere with wildlife in any way. The Park rules say 25 yards is too close to any animal other than bears and wolves. For them it is 100 yards. If I had gotten closer than 25 yards I would, at the very least, have been fined and had my film permit taken away. Those laws are in place for a reason. We shouldn’t interfere with wildlife in any way. We already do that so much by taking their habitat, food, etc. every time we plant a new Walmart, house, road, or any other human activity. The only way to stop that is to stop, and decrease human population growth.
@robvanwyck3063
5 жыл бұрын
I agree Judy that we shouldn't interfere. I'm sure your contributions foster an awareness and encourage the protection of species and habitats. It was amazing photography by the way. I always try to remember that there are not just human beings behind the cameras - but questions of law, ethics, and sincere concern for our planet. Thanks for your efforts.
