this owl is only a few weeks old and being hand-reared so it was imprinted on me. She was being fed four times a day and very used to being handled. The reason she pecks at the fingers is she thinks that they are little mice being offered to her!

Parrots tend to do similar thing. If not trained properly, a Parrot could do some unintentional harm thinking that your fingers are food. Do Owls need training for that too?

I would hope this one stays in the care of humans. It's gonna find it hard to survive in the wild if it's been in the care of multiple people and seems to trust you. The way you can tell a barn owl trusts you is it doesn't screech so loud your ear drums rupture, as does all your neighbors up to three houses down the road.

Hi there. Cute owl. I am raising my own and feeding 3 times a day. At what age can it manage the full chick/mouse? Im cutting them up and dipping them in luke warm water at the minute. Its my first bird and im over the moon. Thanks.

Hi John, it depends on the age of your bird. Offer the food in a range of size pieces, and see what pieces are being rejected. Mice are good because they come in a range of sizes, while chicks are all the same size. I would expect a young bird to be able to swallow a whole chick by the time it is fully feathered. I find the first chick is taken whole when the bird is hungry, and a second is torn up over the next hour when adult. You may already know that if you are raising a single chick it is a good idea to give it a bottle of warm water wrapped in a flannel to provide the warmth that siblings would. A bit of a bind to keep changing but it keeps the chick comfortable and able to put more energy into growing. Hope this helps!

alexssoundtrack thanks for that tip. Wow thats awesome. I have just filled a small tropicana orange bottle (about 6 x 2 inches) with hot/warm water and wrapped it in a sock. He has curled up against it and gone to sleep. What a place to get good idea's from others. I feel like a top dad now lol. Thanks mate.

alexssoundtrack hi again. What age should i fit my birds anklets? When its fully feathered maybe? I have just read my birds a10 certificate and he hatched on 24/9/17 so he is nearly 2 months. He only has a few feathers though but lots of fluff getting bloody everywhere lol. I noticed yours on this vid is almost fully feathered yet also still in the box? Yet you have his anklets on if im correct? Would he not be able to be left on an indoor perch? Thanks.

I don’t think It's the sound of the owl, the sound seems to be so fake...Barn owls are tend to be very quiet, and even if they make any sound, It's very much harsh...not like this.
