I was hearing this song at Doha airport as waiting for a flight. I was using a head phone but there was Girijadevi 's photo on screen. A man was sitting beside me saw the photo & asked me isn't she from Varanasi ? I was surprised because the man was an American. He told me that he is interested in Indian classical music & has gone Varanasi several times. I was delighted & very proud of my culture & heritage.

Girijadevi is a Legend from Varanasi. Hindustani sangeet blossomed in North, perticularly in Varanasi

गुरु मां गिरिजा देवी का जवाब नही। हमको को भी कुछ सीखने का सौभाग्य हुआ है।

She is no more physically with us , but her immortal voice is always evergreen, it touches our hearts.

Incarnation of Mata Saraswathi. So sad and hard to digest that she left us just 3 months back at the age of 88. But immortal in our hearts.

A divine composition by Wazid Ali, able rendition by Girija Devi transports us to the realm of still sad music of humanity couched in Benarasi style. Absolutely genius performance by Vidhushi Girija Devi and tabla legend pandit kumar Basu. Totally out of the world feeling.

pure poetry in Appaji's unique style and voice with the ancient Banarasi flavour and great accompaniment by Kumar da. Thousand times I watched this video and every time I learn something new.

That small verbal dynamic between Bose and Devi towards the end was fun too.

I wonder if the Indian classical music institutions are trying to keep the rich legacy of legends like Smt Girija Devi ji alive. I feel pity for the present generation who haven't witnessed this generation of legends. I will always share the work of these musical gems of India with my children, nephews and nieces. ❤️

I was present in this concert. It was a divine experience. It's very painful to believe that appaji is no more with us.

Mata Girijadevi, Pandit Kumar Bose sakaler charane bhaktipurna pranam janai. Gan bajna na bujhleo sune khub bhalo laglo.

Not many people know this but the words were penned in 1856 by the unfortunate Nawab of Oudh, Wajid Ali Shah, the last ruler of that prosperous ryasat when he was exiled by the British and was forever departing from his palace, to spend his remaining years far from his beloved Lucknow which he knew he will never see again. He was a great patron of art, music and poetry and a fairly good administrator as well. Not at all the incompetent, debauched lecherous no good as painted by the British officials to justify their taking over of his domains.
