Adapted with great sensitivity and invention from Isak Dinesen's short story (itself inspired by The Tempest), this truly lovely tale of everyday passion, magic and miracles is a delicacy to savour. Relocating the story from a bourgeois Norwegian port to a remote, windswept Jutland hamlet so steeped in Lutheran spirituality it feels like something out of a Dreyer film, Axel traces the strange chain of events that led to the two elderly daughters of a famously pious pastor taking on, as their cook, a Parisienne who was until the advent of the Commune one of the city's most celebrated chefs.
At once poignant and funny, gently ironic and quietly compassionate, the story -- beautifully performed by all concerned (some faces are familiar from Dreyer and Bergman), but most especially by Audran, clearly relishing her role as a gastronomic wizard -- casts its spell carefully yet confidently, culminating in the titular banquet: improbable, mouthwatering, supremely regenerative.

I loved this movie. Besides the appetizing scenes, it was very inspirational. I saw this in 1992, the first winter after my mother had passed away. I was so delighted with the film and what Babette had done for the sisters, it inspired me to make a special Christmas Eve dinner for my father and myself. Dad is gone now, but that memory of our own "Babette's Feast" is precious.

Amazing film! Stephane Audran plays the cook so well, you almost believe that the actress cooked all the food herself.

Most film these days the food in films look delicious but are in fact disgusting. The actors and actresses truly nail their acting in these films. Obviously there are cooking shows and most part of those are real. I am wondering if the food cooked in Babette's Feast is actual good food or not. As in are they mostly real since this movie is made in 1987.

turtle soup was so popular that turtles are now protected. that should tell you something about at least one recipe in this film. the wines were known to be exquisite, and recipes for the other dishes can be found online.

“A French dinner.” And ooohhh la la, what a magnificent meal it was! So do the French live up to the stereotype of being the masters of good food and good living? Why is that so?
