Baba Yaga | The Bony-Legged Witch
Deep within the most remote forests of Russia lurks a magical terror: the terrifying Baba Yaga. An emaciated old swamp witch with flowing white hair, claw-like fingers, iron teeth and an appetite for human flesh. Baba Yaga is a frequent part of Slavic myths, acting as either benefactor or obstacle to the main hero!

Also Baba Yaga is better known as John Wick 🤭🤭🤭
The witch Yubaba from the Japanese animated film "Spirited Away" is based on Baba Yaga.
Yes indeed! I learned something new today, in general & specifically about Baba Yaga! I like the fact the she requires folks to accomplish certain tasks in order to gain any insight from her witchly, wise warehouse of intel! As always, excellent content & I love your narration/presentation good Sir!
In animation, she's best known for appearing in Bartok the Magnificent, a DTV sequel to Don Bluth's Anastasia. And she's also part of the music: Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky.

Pictures is better famous in Ravel's Orchestration of 1922. Before that, there was Lydaov's tone poem Baba Yaga from 1904.

I've got a witch mad at me, and you might get into trouble. - Dorothy Gale, The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Probably the best video about Baba Yagá on the KZread so far. Although I'd like to add some things about her cultural origin. It seems that Baba Yaga was originally some sort of border goddess, guardung the border between realms of living and dead. There's lots of implications of this - for example her bone leg may symbolize her ability to walk in both realms. In some stories Baba Yaga tries to eat the protagonist, but changes her mind, when he asks her to feed him - this has a theme of eating the food of the dead to belong to their world - much like in the myth of Hades and Persephone. Anyway, Baba Yaga is probably the most interesting character in all of the Slavic mythology, although Koshey The Immortal and Zmey Gorynich are epic too
One of my favorite figures from the wonderfully weird realm of Slavic folklore. You got some wonderful artwork to accompany the video - really added to the overall suspense that comes with Baba Yaga's character and the stories she features in. What a fabulous way to kick off March! :)
Ah, Baba Yaga. Never tire hearing about her. Plus I often learn facts about her, or what ever topic is covered in your video, that I didn't know before! I'm currently sitting in the family room with one light on, and listening to your narration while watching the video in the little light is just perfect. I love your videos any time of the day I watch them. But it seemed fitting to watch Baba Yaga at night, in somewhat darkness, after my work shift. Thank you again for your hard work!
Which reminds me : as a point of interest, comparisons have been drawn between Baba Yaga and the mother of Grendel in the epic Anglo Saxon poem Beowulf.
You forgot to include Yvan Bilibin in the artist list... He's instrumental in the portrayal of Slavic stories

I once dreamt of a hut like that. In the dream it was derelict, and I took a nap in it. I woke from the nap in the dream to a Summer Solstice festival in a village perced atop treetops and connected by bridges. And there, I drank and feasted before receiving a message from a pair of Ravens pleading repeatedly "Help! Bring help!" I kinda wish there were a real village like that one.
Thanks for using my Baba Yaga piece here too!

@@MythologyUnleashed Thank you! I do try ;) (And yes, many more cryptids and monsters are in the works )
ah yes, i played darkwoods recently and there is a reference to this myth monster. thanks for covering this
It is always a treat to see someone cover one of the lesser explored myths like those of the Slavic. Continuing the trend with Slavic myths I think the Kresnik/Crusnik would be interesting to see covered. Very few if any has covered it.
An excellent examination of a classic character. May I recommend the stories, myths, legends and folktales on the Northworthy Sagas and Stories channel here on KZread.
Baba yaga is also in the tomb raider reboot game she's a DLC villain
Amazing minidocu like always🖤🖤🖤🖤
One of my all time favorite mythical figures in all of history
Origin of John wick
A classic tale!
I would love to see your thoughts on media representations of mythology, such as Baba Yaga in the second season of The Witcher. I’m also curious about your opinion of the video game Smite. It has very interesting portrayals of all different mythological characters, and usually incorporates their lore into their different abilities.
I've herd of Baba Yaga before. Animator Don Bluth created a movie in 1999 that featured her called Bartok the Magnificent go and check it out it's cool.
My first intro to baba yaga was in a PBS episode of Arthur
Baba Yagaaaaaa my favorite 😍
6:34 It seems to me that Baba Yaga may have originated more as a title than a name.
Wait a sec... This video isn't about John Wick. JK 🤪. This story terrified me when I was little. In many stories it seems you can't escape . She might catch you ( have a comb handy) , fly after you or have her house chase you
I haven't read about Baba Yaga in a while.
This was amazing. I love the background music. I’ve heard of Baba Yaga but never really looked into her. It’s really cool to see a myth with more than oneside
I can hear "god of thunder" in the background ❤
Please do a video on Pecos Bill
He was the one you sent to kill the f@ckin Boogeyman....
Anyone else remember Baba Yagas Castle from Soul Eater?
John Wick is the man they sent to kill Baba Yaga
Anatoly Lyadov made a short tone poem in 1905 based on that Witch.
Dig it. Witcher touches on this. The three
Och lol 😁i heard Baba Yaga i thought also from you but i must heard it at some other narrator. I'm half,Russian 🤦🏻♀️now you must be ashamed to be Russian but i have nothing with a war i don't even live there 😔.As a kid, my Mom read a lot of Russian fairy tales to me it was cool. Thank you dear M.U.❤🖤😘👍‼
I knew it
My dad was just telling me about koschei the deathless the other night
The Grandma(Baba) Huntress(Yaga).
The closest thing in Indian mythology would be a Dakini.
Baba Yaga sounds suspiciously like my ex...
First👍
Baba yaga the cannibal witch 😂😂😂😂
Skyrim subplots
Omg , These are old Soviet Union stories. She was our boogieman ... lol
Is this Putin's mom
The VOICE IS TOO QUIET
