Ba Gua Martial Arts Tournament Demonstration

Спорт

Archive footage of Martial Arts Master Bruce Frantzis demonstrating Ba Gua at the first US Tai Chi Tournament in Winchester Virginia. His opponent Sam Masich was the overall first place champion of the contest, and had previously never sparred with Bruce.

I was at this demonstration one of the first demonstrations of practical Baguazhang applications shown in the USA. Here we see no Kodak moments, no fancy Wushu just up close and personal application of Combat Skills from Kumar's Bagua. Sam Masich and Kumar are good friends of mine. Sam said and I quote, “It was not rehearsed, I tried to get him, it was like stepping into a blender, there was almost nothing I could do." Thanks for posting this, bring back old memories. John P. The Gompa hey John I’ve heard great things about your system...I’ve always been more of a taiji guy but I’m wondering if all REAL internal martial arts have the structure systems...when you work on body structure is there a lot of emphasis on opening and closing the kua when you move? Do you speak of song in your system? Is there any type of push hands/listening work? Thanks

One more thing, anyone watching that is not clear about how real this is- Bruce was Nationally ranked in Karate, and also had black belts in Judo and Aikido BEFORE studying Kung Fu. His book changed my life, that is an amazing story as well, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Cool! I just started Paul Cavel's Online "5 Keys" class, it is fantastic.I cannot recommend it highly enough. The book I read was "Power of Internal Martial Arts and Chi." My main objectives are meditation and health, fighting is a distant 3rd. But, if I even get half this fast it won't be a problem. He's at energyarts.com

Mr. Masich is a very experienced and skilled taiji player. Should anyone doubt Mr. Frantzis' mastery this video is proof. One may not wish to like Mr. Frantzis, but one cannot doubt either his brilliance as a martial arts master nor his ability to convey its principles both by action and the written word. He commands respect and emulation.

I saw this shortly after reading Bruce's book "Power of Internal Martial Arts & Chi".I never get tired of this rare combination of speed, power and flexibility. And, now I know there is a lot going on internally that is not observable on the outside. It's great to be back to studying this fantastic art of Bagua, I'm not sure why I stopped but that's a mistake I won't make twice.

I read one of Bruce Frantzis books and it was really good. The Water Method of Taoist meditation is a great practice!

3:30 was amazing! I think that was a hook kick? He stepped into his attack and turned with him! This is awesome!

I was laughing a lot up until the sparring started. You can never underestimate someone based on how they look or move. I know someone who could do a roundhouse to my temple faster then I could get a jab in. He was a balding, slightly overweight guy in his 40's and he could have handed me my ass.

How does this fare when someone grips the Taiji player and takes it to the ground? Like a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu grappler?

Then he would have to resort to ground fighting range. One big mistake a lot of martial artist make is practicing a style that is only effective in a certain range and they try to use it in every range and it don't work. The good thing about learning MMA Aldo not a martial art per se it fource you to train and familiarize yourself with different ranges of fighting.A lot of the so called internal martial arts are based on close range standing grappling range.Thats why when these guys enter competition they are knock out before they can get close to apply their techniques.

As a stand-up art that requires mobility, BaGua is less suited to the ground. On the ground, the BaGua player is out of his/her element. Remember, however, that both Taiji and BaGua are based upon sensitivity and contain disbalancing techniques and Chin-na.

This was a demonstration, not a fight. It seems to me totally clear that Sam Masich was only helping Bruce Frantzis demonstrate the techniques: so he was being a helpful-semi-active dummy. I think the comments show that this video was misunderstood.

yes, Bruce's partner is not aiming for him and takes a running start. it's a good way to showcase the technique without too much danger of hurting him.
